turbocad's custom fx

yeah, ashley, your transporter wil be here soon to pick it up & bring it to you:tongue:

oh my god, what a sick machine this is... the more I look at it & play with it the more amazed I am at it, full carbon fiber bellypan, full carbon frame, cantileaver suspension, ceramic rotors, it sounds like a formula 1 car & it revs like a bike... it moves like insane... I can't belive how fast it is, I never drove anything that felt like this ever & I've driven some fast cars, they tell me it's a bit over 600hp but it feels like double that... it must weigh super light... I got it in for some paint work.. honestly having something like this in the shop is nothing but a huge headache more than anything else... can't wait for it to leave... it's not a very comfortable car I'll tell you that much, but it's so insanely fast that comfort is the last thing you think about when driving it, damn, this has completely spoiled it for me, now I will compare anything fast to this... I am still in shock by how fast this thing is... scary ... now my fx is going to feel like a tugboat :embarrassed:

here in LA we get our fair share of expensive cars, and this is the top of my list of faves. (specially as i HATE the enzo)
i remember the first one i saw, my boyfriend pointed it out and we chased it for a mile. he looked over at us drooling, rolled down his window and said follow me to the next light (i didnt tell him i was gonna anyway) at the next red, he lit that thing up and was 3 lights away before we got across the intersection. amazing vehicle...

that looks like a cool game, gotta get that:biggrin:

man, today this car has completely screwed up my whole perception of what fast is ... I can't stop thinking about what it felt like... the brakes are insane too... I didn't even know this was possible on a street car... I had a mostly fiberglass 68 camaro drag car that ran mid 9's & this felt at least as fast as that once it got moving... can't even discribe how scary & exilerating it was... shit, now I know what the term supercar means... must be nice to have money  I hope the reverse lights aren't too crazy expensive & available to me

Tell me you got to take this thing outta the shop and drove it like a mad man?? .. .. Nice John ... U bastard ..

nah man, tailights are on the back burner right now... I'll get to something with them eventually, but not much of a priority right now...

& yeah, jc,I got to drive it a bit... couldn't be too much of a madman, I mean I'm not too sure if I can even afford the reverse lights from this beast, let alone much else on it really:tongue: I didn't even want to drive it, but the owner kept pushing me to, so eventually I said, oh, alright...I did get on it a bit... glad I did, what an experience...

hey, bumping this up cause I started to show my new tire in the toy thread as a joke, but probably not the best place to continue discussing, figured this thread is probably the best place for this since it involves tires, rims, bodywork, possibly butchering my fx, etc...

so for a while now I've been thinking about moving up to 22's, & I really like the staggered look. being awd, staggered can be a challenge, cause the front & rear have to be the exact same diameter with very little tolerance for differences in tire diameter, front & rear need to be around the same amount of revolutions per mile or the computer will see this as a slip condition & kick up a service light, more like 5 service lights on the fx really.

you'd be surprised how few tires there are out there in 22" with a nice wider rear & a bit narrower matching front that is the exact same diameter or even real close diameter. I looked at pretty much most tires out there trying to find a nice staggered setup in 22's that would be around the right size for the fx. with a nice fat tire out back I want a real muscle look

the tires I came up with looking for a staggered set of 22's are a street sport truck tire. the rears are 315 30 22's & are slightly less overall diameter than stock, but close enough to be fine really. the fronts are going to be 265 35 22's, I would have liked to be a little wider in the front too, but these'll do fine. I tried hard to find a wider tire out back, but can't find anything wider with a matching front, so the 315's will do I guess.

first step in a project like this is to select the tires, second is to build a set of wheels with the exact fit needed to put them where I want them for the body, then, last step is to actually modify the body around the wheels if necessary. it doesn't have to be done in that order I suppose, but that seems to be the best way for me to do this to me... I really don't want to use spacers or anything, I want a custom set of wheels that fit the way I want them to ideally

I ordered a rear tire to see... get an idea of how it fits & how much I want to or need to stretch. surprisingly I think it's very possible to fit this 315 tire completely in the stock wheel well with the right rim, but that would not do anything for my idea of a big fat aggressive body look & I'd still be stuck with stock wheel wells... I'm seriously considering altering the wheel lip & eliminating the whole shadow molding on the bottom of the truck. this is something I always thought I might do someday down the road, but the more I think about just getting one set of wheels the more I think i should do the wheel wells together with the wheels. I really don't want to have to buy another set of wheels in a year or so, bad enough I already bought one set of forged 3 piece 20's, I want just one nice set of 22's....

I really think with the right rim, these tires could be used on any fx, may just need a little triming if they rub slightly if very low, but they can fit with 1/2" clearance to the inner wheelwell. the rim would have to be perfect offset really... these tires will work best with around a 9 1/2" rim in the front & 11 1/2" rim out back....

I hope this projects works out smoothly for you John and does not take away alot of your time cause I know you have other pressing projects waiting in the wings :wink::biggrin:. But I can't wait to see which wheels will be mated with these bad boys.

i think you will only be happy going the custom 3 piece rim route like rookie. Maybe he has some connections to get you some custom HREs! (get the ready to cut off arm and leg lol )

yeah, HRE's might be a little too heavy duty for me, but I do want to go with a nice custom 3 piece forged wheel.

I have a few friends in the wheel business, distributors, which is what you ned to get a custom wheel from a huge top wheel builder, but I've been talking to a few wheel builders direct too. I found one builder in florida that will work with me & build a wheel to my specs, & not too crazy priced. he's even willing to send me just the wheel centers raw, I'd paint them & send them back to him for assembly, then ship me the completed wheels.

once I determine the size & offset I want front & rear, it's possible that an off the shelf wheel might be available too, kinda like trying to find the right pair of staggered tires, try to find the right set of off the shelf standard wheels. that might need to change the bolt pattern though. the original stud holes can be welded closed in the hubs & then new bolt pattern drilled. that's not very hard, but wouldn't be necissary with a custom built wheel.

the real decision is weather I alter the body itself, & how much. I'm thinking of the possibilty of stretching out the whole rear of the fx, not so much flared, but have the body widen from the front 1/3rd of the rear door & the quarters also stretched & widened a bit. then, eliminate the plastic wheelwell trim & convert the wheelwells to something more similar to say a g37 or something, sleek, but kinda still factory looking, in that if you didn't know the fx, it will look like it coulda came that way.

here's an idea of what I mean... picture the door being closed, but the back of it being out like it's open a few inches, then picture the quarter also brought out to that level... I'm not talking huge dramatic stretch, just maybe 1.5"-2" out at it's widest point, then another 1.5-2" on the revised lip... total widening maybe 4" or so each side?

of course the quarter panel would be stretched out as much as the door, & the rear bumper & the rockers gotta be worked too... I got it all pictured in my head, just to see if it can go from my head to fx metal is the question:rofl: this is one thought that I've been fighting with in my head for a while now.... if I do this then I'll have to repaint more than half the fx over again so I probably will wind up repainting the whole thing at that point. when I first did my fx I kept it conservative with the black pearl... if I redo it I may go with a black cherry that I originally had in mind for it, but chickened out last minute & just went with the black pearl... figured it'd be easier to sell if I decided I don't like the fx... well' after almost a year of driving it I'm pretty sure I like my fx:smile: looked at & test drove the new one, but decided I'll keep this one at least 3 more years then get a new/used 09...

Don't want to confuse you anymore but I'd LOVE it in anytime in the future you'd come up with a custom front section for the new FX. I don't see anybody else to have the balls to it & this was just a utopic wish

Back on the topic, 3 things come to my mind
1) If you just widen the rear, there's a good chance that it'll look like those guys at the org that copied Rookie's front and fucked up the rear
2) If you're going to touch the rear bumper, why not "fix" that rear extension and make it look more like the new fx's rear? (I'm not talking about reflectors and stuff btw)
3) If you get rid of the black frames around the fenders then (With the perfectionist bug biting you hard), you'll start working on the bottom rear and front parts (because the black plastic will annoy you) at which point this thing will get out from being a widening job to an all over custom body kit thingy..

dude, if I really had the paper, I'd love nothing more than to grab a new fx & go off on it, always dreamed of taking a new car & chopping the hell out of it, but not in the cards right now at all, bad enough taking a pefectly beautiful car like this & chopping it up like this... the new fx is several years away for me...

as far as my fx, well, really the bumpers & rockers are a given at that point, & would have to be modded too. I already got the bumpers in mind of what I'd do with them. no fiberglass, I want to keep them urethane. already collected a rear bumper a while ago, & the front I'll modify the existing one.

I would widen the front & the back, the front just not as much & all pretty much contained within the fender itself... overall the whole thing will be reworked to all fit togeather & look proportionate, think like a 350z or something, staggered wheels & staggered body kinda... not just gonna stick one thing out of place with everything else, the whole thing will tie togeather as an overall custom body...
