VK45 –Stage 1 Headers/JWT cams/TB/intake

Whoa, I want to be in on some of these PM's. I'm starting to get some interest among the M guys and would love to have some more info. The more I dig, the more I see the potential in this engine.

It's a double-edged sword for me though because even as though interest is being generated on the whole, most of the M guys that are interested in performance drive Y50s. I seem to be the lone Y34 guy that wants to go past just intake and exhaust which is kinda weird IMO because the Y34 M45 and F50 Q45 had the highest factory output for the VK (340HP/333TQ). They're all into VIP style which looks cool, but $3500 for a body kit from Japan could be $3500 in performance mods.

Random side question: How many miles do you guys have on your VKs? I'm at 115K.

34K for me, I won't eat off it but the engine looks like new inside and out. What does the top of the Y34 look like W/O the covers? Mind posting a quick pic?

Definitely don't sell it -- it's a rare ride and imposing body shape. Thing looks like a tank.
Something you don't see every day either.
What intake and exhaust? All these parts should drop into your car no problem. BTW, OEM FX 20's or OEM GTR 20's look sweet on the M45.
Thanks! I've liked the shape since I first saw it. Kinda reminiscent of the previous-Gen Q45, but a little more modern.
I did a custom intake similar to a PopCharger (do the FX's have a 4" intake too?) and a Magnaflow muffler with the 2 rearmost resonators removed.
I actually like both the FXs and the GT-Rs on the car but I haven't decided which ones I like better. I'm leaning toward the staggered GT-Rs though.

Wow, only 34K? Nice! I'll post a pic tonight when I get home. Still at work and can't see the pictures here to know which link I'm posting

Here's why a CAI into the filter presents a bit of a challenge. Thinking about cutting a hole big enough for the tubing and running it down there when I replace the upper tubing coming from the TB (don't mind the zip tie, didn't want to bother bending brackets until I get ready to do the final product):

102k miles here and still going strong. She purrrrrrrrrrssssssss the same as the day I got her. I'm still amazed how smooth it idles.

Latest update - specifically on the manifold - straight from the tech:

Hi Lance,

I got the intake manifold apart and ported out the inside of it. I
took a few pictures of what it looks like for you. There are throttle
plates in behind the velocity stacks which is the 2 stage intake
manifold. Changes resonance for high RPM power. From the factory it is
VERY rough from the stack to the runner. There are some HUGE
machining marks and lips in there. I Ported all that out, ground,
smoothed, and cleaned up for very good air flow. I also Port matched
and opened up the top runner section to the lower manifold piece. The
part from the velocity stack where it goes to the lower piece before
the head, it was 4mm smaller! All that is done now and I will try to
get some good pictures before coating.

I did remove all the cast pieces on the top of the manifold, Just need
to finish grinding them smooth so they match under the coating.

Luckily the Throttle plates/valves in the manifold are easy to remove
so coating it will be easy :)

Very nice Logan!

And glad to hear everyones' VKs holding up nicely.

I made the decision last night to sell mine (there's a for sale thread posted), but I'm still going to stay on top of these threads as I plan on getting another VK-powered vehicle in the near future.

Saw that man, little saddened BUT maybe you'll pick up a VK powered FX and join the brotherhood. Your 45 is very clean!

Late breaking news - Based on the intake porting/reworking, my builder believes it could be worth
10-15whp. He said he has seen seen similar gains on a 2.0L 4 cyl (SR20) and on a 4.5L
V8 he would hope for that at least.

Thanks man! Yeah, it will probably be an FX that I get next when I do decide to purchase another (and I will. LOL!). I really like the VK and something tells me that the future holds much more for the VK in this platform than the M (I do still really like the M though).

That's some good news from the shop! This is shaping up to be a pretty nice builds with some solid gains!

More late breaking news - I may need new injectors to support the fuel flow. Any input on sizing as to what OE size is now and what I'll need? I've asked UPREV but nothing back from them yet.

What makes you think you'll need bigger injectors? Not to say you won't - I have no idea - just curious as to the logic.

UpRev is bad enough when it comes to communicating, and they are off to SEMA now. Don't hold your breath for a response.

My guy said it depends on what stock is, On a V8 the injectors can do 1.3x the cc rating in HP so a 300 cc on a V6 can do 300WHP and on V8 400 HP. I shouldn't need anything bigger than 300-350cc don't know what the VK OE injector is yet....

JWT just confirmed OE VK injectors are 325cc's - I'm all set.

Hey Lance once the surfer gets out of the shop I am getting a ride right (passenger at least)? I'll let you drive my boring 35 for a change

OE exhaust manifolds have been pulled, according to my guy they didn't want to leave the engine bay so much.....Final welding on headers to be completed this weekend and then its off for coating. O2 sensors will work no extensions needed rear sensors may or may not work. No new pics yet.

Fitting the new pipes. Build is taking a bit longer (imagine that =) but I have assurance they will be amazing. With assurance like that how can I complain about the timing?
