VK45 –Stage 1 Headers/JWT cams/TB/intake

Ground arrival 5 days, install starts in two weeks (depending on my ride status). Then I need to re-tune. Really want to wait for the headers and then do the re-tune but I really want the interim Dyno results for the iS community at large.

super excited to see the results... , even got me looking thru ebay for a fx45.

there are a lot of luxuries in life that cost a lot

having a cam'd out 4.5L V8 FX with headers & other breathing & tranny mods may cost a lot, but that's why no one has one too, so in some ways a cam'd out 4.5L FX with headers & modded up nicely may be priceless to it's proud & happy owner... it's all relative, I've seen more cash spend on a nice watch. it's all relative & a mater of what you enjoy. if it's worth it to you & you can afford it is all that matters I think, there are a lot of worse ways to spend it :)

ahmen brotha. i tip my hat to you turbo:tup:

I can't wait for the dyno results! thanks for being our test monkey! but i must say logan your drive is very deep and your one hell of a guy for being so brave, lol

CAM's and springs are fully in. Headers are tacked up, final welding and chromex thermal coating should be done later this week. Waiting for one more mod to arrive from CA. Lightweight pulley is sadly missing from this build. Manifold is undergoing some internal reworking then it is also going in for Chromex coating. Changing a couple of things on the intake, a few small appearance issues as well then its go time, hopefully next Sunday, if all goes according to plan UPREV tune and dyno the following week (schedule permitting).

what size lifters? DLC VQ37 lifters used? Don't skip on details.

If so, you should use Mobile 1 or ester based oil... = expensive.

Doing a two stage oil change, tech is insistent about purging the system after the work. Going to stick with Amsoil....

RE: the lifters, He went back and forth with Ben at JWT and they agreed that the stock lifters were best, fit to size and in X shape, I was surprised as I thought they would need to be replaced and individually measured. Spring install was more difficult than he expected. He said the 45 heads are brilliantly designed, the manifold has room for improvement.....

Lance, can't wait to see the dyno print out.
You and me both Andy, I've already decided on my point of pain anything over will be a bonus.

Also very interested in the results of all your work Lance.:top:
Thanks Doc, found out some good info along the way, if the net/net is solid maybe there will be equity in a volume deal for others....at lest one of the mods will be an inexpensive/easy gain.......

With my techs help I plan on doing a complete DL of all information gleaned from this experience.

Wow. Definitely making some progress here. I can't wait to see the results.

That makes the 2nd time that I've heard of someone saying something like that about the VK. It's a really good engine.

Lance your ride will be awesome, it is already one of my favorite 1st Gens. What a great get well gift to yourself.

Agreed - bulletproof, strong and with upside for power. It is raced succsessfully in higher end applications but never made the mass market cross platform status as the VQ..........so here we are digging deeper.

Logan to be honest I have been so busy with work that I have not had any chance to reply to your PM's and dig deeper on my end. Just not enough time to get to JWT and do something worth while for all of the Vk's

No worries Bert, glad to hear that biz is good. My PM's are mostly updates, you should see the detail emails Ed is getting bombarded with =). Bottom line is that My "guy" loves the VK the more he gets into it he sees great promise with the powerplant. As a basis point - What I am having done plus full stroker work would get you closer to the real deal BUT the cost for a new crank - not cheap.....I am very curious to hear how your build is proceeding, at some point maybe the two projects will cross pollinate =)

Whoa, I want to be in on some of these PM's. I'm starting to get some interest among the M guys and would love to have some more info. The more I dig, the more I see the potential in this engine.

It's a double-edged sword for me though because even as though interest is being generated on the whole, most of the M guys that are interested in performance drive Y50s. I seem to be the lone Y34 guy that wants to go past just intake and exhaust which is kinda weird IMO because the Y34 M45 and F50 Q45 had the highest factory output for the VK (340HP/333TQ). They're all into VIP style which looks cool, but $3500 for a body kit from Japan could be $3500 in performance mods.

Random side question: How many miles do you guys have on your VKs? I'm at 115K.

Thanks! I contemplated selling mine a couple of weeks ago (I have too many projects), but I think I'd hate myself if I did. Too rare and I found one that was mint outside of the wheels (old guy was previous owner-apparently loved curbs). I love the way it drives and the power is smooth and strong. The suspension is "sporty" but still a little squishy for my tastes coming from a slammed Altima SER. Parts Shop MAX just came out with a set of coilovers though so I'll be remedying that shortly.

I was washing mine one day and decided to pull the engine covers off and even with the mess of vacuum lines and what not, it actually looks pretty good. Brackets and stuff are still shiny and everything. Actually noticed a nice drop in the temps on the manifold and tubing, it's still pretty warm, but I can still touch it.

Definitely don't sell it -- it's a rare ride and imposing body shape. Thing looks like a tank.

Something you don't see every day either.

What intake and exhaust? All these parts should drop into your car no problem. BTW, OEM FX 20's or OEM GTR 20's look sweet on the M45.
