My mileage has indeed slipped, hoping that during my next tune the tech can bring it back a bit. My low end didn't suffer as far as I can tell, Torque is still solid, from a dead start I can easily break the tires loose and I can always get a second gear scratch. Higher compression pistons is definitely another way to go and yes running higher octane gas will most likely be needed. As it stands I always run the best petrol I can get. Make sure you have the right tech to do pistons on the 45, I don't know anyone who has changed them out as of yet.

Still need to install the test pipes to see if the blockage is creating a pulse and affecting power output, been traveling too much to manage my ride needs. for now it still goes and drives very well.

Let me know how that works out, I want to do that as well.

I know I'm late to the party, but I couldn't read all 55 pages of posts and not comment. What an amazing build! The sound and look inspires me to get started modding my 04 FX45. If you are ever in Houston I would love to see the silver surfer in person.

Hey Logan,

This is an amazing thread and story....I cant believe you stuck with it, but in your tenacity I must say thank you! I have an M45 that I want to cam and possibly swap in a VQ56. The headers are already done (pic for weld porn...opps I dont have 10 post yet...ill edit later once I reach the threshold).

If you had it to do all over again would you have swapped in a VQ56? I read somewhere in this thread that you started to do it but had issues with the accessories matching up. Beyond this issue was the physical outside size of the engine close or the same?

Is your M45 RWD? I feel like a lot of the issues with the VK56 is the AWD not lining up correctly as it does in the VK45. I've been wondering if a VK56 would be an easier swap into a RWD FX35, using a motor from a RWD VK56 vehicle.

I've been wondering if the VQ and VK mount the same. I actually pm'd Logan about it awhile ago and haven't heard back.

I dont think they do. Check this link...its an adaptor to mount a RWD 350/370z 6 speed to a vq56. The 350/370z are VQ35 RWD if you arent familiar.

The main issue you will run into is that your (correct me if I am wrong) FX35 is a V6. You'll have to swap over all the electronics and wiring harness, ECU, etc. That can get extremely involved....you might be better off supercharging it or turbo. Theres a guy selling a Stillen charger for a VQ35 RWD right now on FB. I saw it listed this morning for 2700.

Yeah 35 is a V6, but 45's with the VK only come in AWD, which is where issues come up. I know I've seen VK56's in 350Z's and G35's. Oh and I'd prefer to not have to go to a manual transmission, but I don't know how viable that is. I already have one manual car, so I would want something that isn't as involved when driving.

My tech has also written copious notes for JWT and would be willing to share information with anyone wanting to do the same to a VK45. One of the benefits here is that you will have a real number and you can decide whether or not you want to spend the cash to follow through, for me it was a black hole due to issues caused by unknowns and simple mistakes.

Hi Logan,

Could I please get a copy of these notes?

I have the old Fluid Motor Union M45 with crazy custom headers and the only thing missing at this point is cams. stanceworks.com/2011/08/late-nights

I would love to see what I can pull out of a RWD VK45 but want to read through your notes first for obvious reasons. Thanks for sticking with it...most would cut bait.
