turbocad's custom fx

well, my outlook at it is that a real diffuser would need to extend undernieth the belly pan of the fx for it to even attempt to even be a diffuser, this is not a diffuser, it's just a rear valance styled after a diffuser. sometimes styling is enough, where real deal might be a bit overkill. just like the 2010 camaro, murano's crv's & many other cars use rear valances that are diffuser "inspired" without actually having to look like or really be a diffuser.

I've actually considered & mocked up using a real carbon fiber diffuser from a real deal carrera gt & another from a ferrari, but aside from the fact that they were too small for the big ass of the fx they were also rediculously overkill & ricey looking no matter how well integrated with there very agressive styling & how they would need to be mounted to be effective. this is more styled after a diffuser than actually being a diffuser, kinda like many wings & diffusers on street cars are more styling than function really. many body styling is influenced & styled after splitters, wings & diffusers without actually being areodynamically effective

in order for a wing to be effective it may need to be a huge ricey looking thing. a wing on a maxima or a sentra or even a supra or camaro is more styling than actual functionality, but it adds an agressive flavor & attitude if not overdone. if I wanted an actual rear diffuser it would be a seperate aluminum plate extending under the belly, it would extend below this facia & then this facia would become an extension of the diffuser & it would connect to it & flow with it, that could be a possibilty but I think even without a real diffuser this looks nice as just a styling cue for what it is, especially grafted in & smoothed & painted one piece with the bumper. I'm liking it & really considering trying it further...

as far as smooth, I don't know but to me it looks a lot smoother overall than even the factory design which is one thing I really like about it, the factory bumper with the dual steps is almost like a sideways "w", where now it's more curvy & smooth, especially on the profile, now with this filler grafted in the bumper just gracefully curves down & under the fx smoother than even the stock design in overall shape. will look real nice with the wing I'm making & fit well with it I think. it improves the sexy curves of the fx in a way too, the rear now just cuves down, bumps out for the bumper & then smoothly curves down & finishes. the diffuser style blocks kinda make it not too smooth too, just a completely round smooth bumper is something I considered too, but it then looks a bit too plain, like somethings missing, plus, I like the way the exhaust exits through the bumper as opposed to under it. other rear styles I've considered are everything from the 09 maxima to the s55 & even the cls63's, audi a6's, all similar in the smooth fitting shape similar to the fx with lower exhaust exits, but something about this camaro piece just works well to me, & when finished I think it will look hot

front bumper I've pretty much got my mind made up with that, when I'm ready I'm going to order an 09 bmw m6 convertible front bumper cover & graft the lower part of it into the fx front bumper, it's a perfect match & compliment to the fx rounded nose & is exactly the right shape, the right size & the right look to me & I've considered pretty much every bumper style there is, I'm pretty set on the front I think.

sides design wil be heavily dependent on how I wind up ending the sides of the rear bumper too, as the rocker needs to tie in to that visually & match up well there to me, sides are last to design cause it's gotta tie the front into the rear. bringing the wheel well moldings into it & working with them will be a little tricky but I got a few things in mind there too, want to work as 100% bolt on urethane kit style install really, no fiberglass or bondo at all, nyc parking is way too brutal for fiberglass bumpers, I need the flexability & durabilty of factory style urethane plastic composite flexable bumpers really, grafting togeather several oe bumpers into one will give me oe bumper durabilty for the most part.

front look I'm going for... also smooth with a hint of agressive & well fitting I think

probably more likely to delete the emblem at that point too maybe... yeah, factory tuner style is what I'm looking for really I guess

Can't wait to see the magic you work on her, turbo. One of the things that keep me from a body kit is that I would rip it off on a curb or parking barrier ten minutes after installing it.

Looks like the M5 Facia..

Looks good.. In regards to the back.. I like it..

It makes the FX ass look aggressive.... The only mod would be to the Stillen Tips to fill in the Exhaust openings....

To each their own.. I say..

John, the M6 front kinda looks like the newer M35 front with that bulge. Maybe that also would work, and would fit better? I'm not sure how the lower part looks.
Bert, you have to like the rear, last we saw yours looked similar.

I've looked at m35's, g35's, g37's, I've looked at just about anything I could get my eyes on for many months now, truth is there are many that can work, but for one reason or another just doesn't look ideal to me. for example the g37 front facia would work fine, but the shape & look of the fx grille is similar enough to the g that now the nose of the fx looks like a big fat g, just don't look right, too distinctive as to what it is. the m6 design is generic enough, & the overall nose layout is different enough that no one will look at the front of the fx & think that's a bmw bumper, it'll just look different, custom & fit well, it's a good extension of the existing lines & looks like it belongs there, especially when I change up the grille & add my fogs & stuff I think...

a little more adjusting...

The chrome rocker panel strip seems a bit out of place, be nice to see it disappear. Also like to see the door handles painted to match the body (I get the tie in with the rails, wheel lips and other polished bits but material cues can be minimal and still be effective). The matched rockers and door pulls works really well on Viets ride but his car is a pretty aggressive visual, having everything color coded helps the "liquid" feel of the body.

That said-Your car looks slick TC. The bumper is a good choice.....What grill change up?

I agree it would probably be better without the lower chrome, but I think leave the handles. I did a couple PS's for comparison

i love the front because it doesn't alter the factory look too badly, not feeling the rear that much but it'll obv look different when its complete

p.s. cant wait for my caps ;)

Nice setting John can't wait to see it put together... Love the front... It looks oem.. Just like it was design for it.. Good job.

I like the direction of the side skirts. The front overall looks like its a good fit but looks a bit hollow visually I think it needs more meat to it.

Nice, chrome strip should go, handles can stay. Side skirts look great.

I agree with Doc.. This was the original direction I wanted to take before I went with the Wide Body..

These side skirts are a bit hard to pull off since the lower part of our doors have an arched indentation to them..

It was hard to make the side skirt blend with that line...

yeah man, that side body line & the way those lower chrome moldings sit are making the sides a huge pain really, those lines alone are almost enough reason to do custom bodywork, but I'm going to try to work with them as much as I can...

as far as the lower chrome moldings, I did think about getting rid of them but really I can't without getting into bodywork on the metal which I'm trying to avoid, the best I could probably do there is to black them out or body colr them so they don't stand out but the moldings themselves will have to remain really I think. this side body lines are the hardest part, front & rear are easy in comparison really

& bert, I hear ya, sometimes starting with ideas like this will just lead to more & more & eventually just go with custom body anyway, I'm really trying to avoid that at this point but then again who knows, the sides & the wheel opening moldings & side body lines are the hardest thing to work with & the real challenge here, hoping I can get it to look right to me without altering the body... & of course I do really dislike the wheel opening moldings as-is anyway , so working with them is even more difficult when I really wish they were just gone all togeather...
