turbocad's custom fx

hey dat, these early attesa systems were really cool. they use a hydraulic clutch for the front drive engagement, similar to like a brake caliper in function. there is a hydraulic pump in the rear of the car to pressurize it & apply this clamping force & it's controlled by a computer, but intercepting it is not hard.

with no pressure in the system it's rwd.... then, depending on how much pressure there was fed to the transfer it could lock the front anywhere from 0% full rwd, all the way up to a full 50/50 lock, which is 100% locked awd. there was even a gage on the dash showing reading real time 0-50% front lock which was pretty cool too.

some drag racers have gutted the whole computer/pump system & instead use an emergency brake lever connected to a hydraulic cylinder, like a master cylinder or a clutch cylinder etc... do the burn out in rwd, then pull the lever to engage awd lock, then after launch mid track the awd can be released too by pushing the lever back down...

now there are a lot of options for aftermarket stand alone programmable center dif control computers available to control the factory hydraulic pump too, do luck was one of the first to do one in japan I think back when these cars were new & there pretty cool. you have a few dials & switches, you could switch from rwd to automatic sense awd to full lock awd right from the dash. in auto sense mode you can also dial in the engagement depending on a lot of factors like g force & various other inputs... you can actually dial in understeer & oversteer of the car depending on how much fwd engagement there is.... this is fun:smile (2):

I will probably have to use a stand alone center dif control anyway because there is no such thing from nissan as an HR powered stick shift vehicle with AWD, don't exist, so the "correct compatible " ecu for my application is non existent. unless I can get one of the ecu programming guys to merge the awd logic to the stick shift rom, I'm most likely going to have to just run a stick shift ecu & awd will most likely now need to be separate stand alone control. in a way that's cool because I can now have full control from the dash like the do luck controller has... theres one controller out there that uses the wrx dif control knob too, custom center diff control computers are big in the subaru crowd I think

so now I need to get a bell housing that will line up with the HR engine, & then cut the front part of it off. I'm going to then need to cut the front off of the stick tranny & weld the front of the HR housing to it. because the only stick version tranny that's available for the HR engine is the 6mt & it's bell housing is also part of the whole transmission housing, this means that I needed a whole 6mt tranny from an 07 & up g or z just to cut the front of it off...

there is also the possibility of using an automatic transmission bell housing. the automatic transmission bell housing does unbolt from the automatic transmission & is a separate piece, but I winded up getting a whole used auto tranny to take the bell housing from too, I'll have to do a lot of measuring & calculating to figure out which bell housing is best compatible with which stick tranny but at least now I have all the pieces I need to play .

so now it seems I have a total of 4 transmissions, that I will eventually attempt to cut up & turn into at least one, but hopefully 2 custom awd stick shift transmissions, to be compatible with nissans latest large bell housing bolt pattern. this is pretty cool, imagine even a late model awd m or g with FI laying down power like the old school gt r's & getting all attesa like with a awd stick :tongue (2): like a poor mans gt r:biggrin: why hasn't this been done before?:smile (2):

now what sucks though is I just gotta resist playing with all these new toys too much until my headers & turbo swap is done & running:frown:... I'm going to have to build a whole mess of an alignment jig to get precision alignment in building these transmissions too.... prolly start it's own thread when the aluminum starts flying

I had the mag with that yellow JUN Racing R34. I remember something about the fact that they were selling them in Japan for less than it would cost to build one...

Dumb comment -- but what about a QX4 4-speed 4WD transmission or QX56 5-speed 4WD transmission? Are those viable options?

A little off topic, but any plans for a LSD? Is the awd rear diff the same as the rwd unit?

No Atessa-ets on the QXs. :frown:

yeah man, I guess I may have to look into an lsd eventually, but I don't think I'd look forward to the clunking of an lsd really... I've been looking for a JDM rear pumpkin from an r34 attesa ets pro setup, but this is really impossible to find so far... the ets pro uses a hydraulic locking dif similar to the way the awd lock works, through hydraulic pressure... diff is open until pressure is introduced to vary lock %... that would be ideal but like trying to find a needle in a haystack really... they were pretty rare to begin with, not so many made & none imported here at all...

far as a truck 4wd unit, no way, the nissan trucks all pass the front driveshaft on the left of the motor instead of the right, the front diff sit's on the left too instead of the right like ours does... everything is very different & unusable here...

the attesa awd really does affect the handling of the car a lot... heres one thing I found on the affect of custom center diff control & handling:

I've been reading a whole lot of Japanese translated sites & a whole lot of stuff from the UK, the most info I've been finding by far is coming from the UK on these skyline gt r's

who would really go ape shit nuts for an awd 5mt or awd 6mt would be the G's man, Z's don't care so much about this cause theres no AWD there, FX's interest even is very minimal, I mean you can probably count all the big HP fx's on one hand, but G's... I keep thinking of an FI G with a getrag 6MT AWD... would def be a GT R killer...

sick - I'm just glad you're going the r34 6-speed tranny way.

I'll make you a deal though, since you got the 350z tranny and will cut the bellhousing, I'll send you a toyota bellhousing that you can slap on it and I'll buy the tranny back from you with its new toyota compatible bellhousing. Deal? :D
Basically need a 6speed tranny that can handle a bit of power - I'd go v160 (toyota supra getrag) but these are like $3-$4k!
I think the 350z transmission can be had for $500 so with your fab skills and shipping it'd be like $700? a bargain for a 6-speed that can handle 600hp

Let me know and keep doing work!

as a side note, I think you should start a thread about garage build and show off what you've got at your house.

oh don't worry man, I'm all about research, I'm all over the aussie forums mate, just reading though :smile (2):

I'm learning so much about the gt r's, there really unique cars... the 6 speed getrag is also considered a v160 transmission, same tranny really, guts are swappable between the 2, just the housings differ but either version is like gold to get your hands on. I'm really happy I found mine, this thing is like a major upgrade for my build, adding the heart of Godzilla to the mix :tonguey:

technix, that 6mt tranny came to me from a dealer connection, same as that junk automatic I got for it's bell housing, it's a tranny that was replaced under warranty.. no idea what the original issue was, could be anything from a slight noise some where all the way up to being really broken. that's not even the biggest problem with what your proposing though...

the alignment of the drive train is a critical alignment. the only way to build a custom bell housing to any transmission is to accurately line up the drive train crankshaft to the input shaft of the tranny. this requires having a block for mock up, complete with the crank, flywheel clutch pressure plate & throw out bearing etc, & it's got to be a custom built jig to align & adjust positioning... chances for error are pretty high, jig must be ridgid & lazer aligned from snout of crank to rear, then on the same axis from nose of tranny to output shaft with almost no room for error. I'll only be set up for this one bell housing. wait till you see the funky jig it's going to take for this one:laugh:

Just a thought-- didn't Getrag also make the 6-speed transmission in the 3000GT VR-4's? These cars were factory AWD with TT setup with factory HP around 325HP. Likewise with the Dodge Stealth R/T's (same car, essentially). I'd think these transmissions would be much easier to come by than the r34's, r33's etc and were made by Getrag. These cars were also very moddable.

I sourced a junk tranny for you to use, but it's true that you would also need the spare block and all that - Wish I lived in the area, because I have all that stuff sitting in my garage! haha

Looking forward to pictures of the jig and see how it all comes out!

that's a fwd based setup, transverse engine... not usable here, although they were pretty strong trannies too...

Ah darn, that's unfortunate. I knew a few guys back in the day that were pushing 500HP no sweat on their VR-4's, with 0 modification to the tranny other than perhaps a different clutch.

technix, there are other things to consider too, like the input shaft, is the pilot bearing the same diameter? is the input shaft same size? same splines? mine are but that's nissan to nissan, your case might not be... also gotta look at push vs pull on the throw out

I winded up scoring an oe jdm attesa pump, the last "impossible to find" part of my jig saw puzzle here... these things are very hard to find, a miracle that one happened to pop up just when I need it  luckily no one else was looking for one too, thought I'd have to battle it out with at least one other buyer... guess not :tongue (2):

Man... John, you crazy. On your FX alone are parts from so many different cars now... benz mirrors, skyline tranny, g37 engine, etc. Frankenstein indeed!
