turbocad's custom fx

I think you have to stop producing the engine and TT kit and start producing machinary to make all these things.
I said this before and will say it again....just when i think you cannot outdo yourself you prove me wrong.......Man i'd even want to move to NY now......couple of minds together.......many ideas.......Man what would NY have some sicks FX'ers driving around then.

Great job buddy....!! My engine is finished and were building it up next week. Plan still is too mount it all end of the winter as i need so many additional things and money is slow at this point so have to save some to get some

It's quite amazing that you buy what people consider 'quality' tools and improve a shit ton on them or end up using them in a completely different way. Read weld a lot of stuff to them. haha

The welds are really starting to look great. Not sure if you've been on it, but weldingweb.com is a great place to talk about welds and also how you can improve your technique.

Now go go go turbo!!

I've been on weldingweb & got a bunch of help there :)

oh man, since I got this tig welder & plasma cutter I've been loving them. I bought the plasma cutter & the tig welder both to be portable small units, there both inverter based & can both work on either 110v or 220v, so I can use them at home too. while they are small & portable it's still a major pita to try to just carry everything back & forth every day, so for the most part they winded up staying at the shop most times... kinda defeats the point of getting tiny inverter based expensive portable units & they will wind up getting a bit beat up being in the shop environment all the time...

well I started thinking that at the shop I really didn't have to have tiny efficient units, I mean I do have 220v available & even 3 phase with a large industrial main power feed to the building, so I started to think about getting another bigger old tig welder & plasma cutter to keep at the shop so I can take my little portable expensive new equipment home. Idea there would be that I can have both tig welding & plasma cutting at the shop at in my home garage....

well I started searching around for a good deal on a good ac/dc tig welder for the shop, something that can still do both steel & aluminum & I winded up scoring on on craigslist... got an old miller 330a bp ac/dc tig welder with high frequency start & all. this is a transformer machine & it's a monster... it can do up to 460amps tig welding compared to the 200amps of my smaller inverter tig. this thing has enough power to tig weld frame rails & very think aluminum, it can weld anything. it's a monster & comes in at a little under 900lbs but it's the kind of machine that with a little bit of maintenance here & there it'll last forever. this tig is known to have one of the smoothest arcs of any tig welder & it works so nice...

this thing is real kickass, it's got so much power that if I crank it up on full it will blow a dime sized hole clean through an 1/8" plate of aluminum, but turned down it is soft enough to weld razor thin materials too, I love this thing & the best part, I just about stole it for all of $250! these things were over 4k when they were new & a new equivalent machine with this much power would still be about as much

so now that I got a nice tig for the shop & I took the dynasty home... now I need a big plasma cutter for the shop so I can take my little plasma cutter home too :) been looking & looking for a good deal & finally found one. I picked up a snap on YA5550 50 amp plasma cutter on ebay :) another kick ass machine, can cut through 1" steel, got a score on it too at ~$350!!, another $4,000 machine new... haven't got it yet but this is what it looks like...

I love tools & this fx project has just caused a tool avalanche it seems... 6 months ago if you would have told me that I'm going to have a tig welder & a plasma cutter at home & at the shop I woulda said your nuts.... oh well, now all I need is a lathe & a mill & I can build almost anything  but enough of that, I really gotta just get the turbo project finished first :embarrassed: hopefully it all comes together soon, the madness continues:frown:...

while you're in your garage, can you build me a time machine. Appreciate it man.

Impressive work u got in ur hands man, Enjoy. when its done. lol

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

if theres ever a zobmie attack im retreating to your shop and we're going to build a couple of armored fx's

I haven't even picked up the other plasma cutter I bought yet, but now I'm going to look at another one today too :err: I was working on the bigger 80 amp thermodynamics one before, but it didn't look like it was going to go through so I just grabbed that snap on one since it was such a good deal, but now the other one may have come through after all so I may wind up having 3 plasma cutters by the end of the day  anyone feel like cutting there fx into pieces we can do it really quick with 3 of these things going :tonguey:

Any updates this yr TC6?
Spend abou 2 hrs going threw this one on your "west coast car"/ "east coast truck"Then went threw the post on just the pc, shit is crazy

I got the shop and tools to do it but the add kicks my but. Look! A bird. I have done tig & mig stl & stan but alum that's a whole diffrent game. But u seem to being it right and learning it. Being from Houston know a lot of pipe fitter/xray tecks, and working in plants and under stand on the weilding. Hope everthing else runs smooth for ya. If anitpything could be done from the south to help, let me know. Need to pick your brain, when u have time on the pc. Ill start a new topic for that tho.
That's one killer a$$ ride you got. Keep it up.

I'm so behind on work from last night but couldn't pull my self from going threw tell the end.

Oh ya, you are crazy, but everyone is to some a point.

I just got done reading this thread and all I can say is boy what a lot of work and it looks good to . Hope you get done soon so we can see some numbers.

hey guys, yeah... I've been a bit delayed...

when I started this project I knew that I could do it, I mean I pretty much know how to do most of what needs to be done & I've even done it before too, this isn't my first engine swap...

when assessing the project, I realized that my biggest challenge would be the wiring & keeping everything on the CAN buss happy, having the 07 components play nicely together with the 03 components. if I was going to have any major complications it would probably be here, & one way or another I would figure out a solution....

going in I thought that the only thing I did not have enough skill with is the fabrication of aluminum components & the ability to weld up stainless steel headers by myself, but, going in I just figured I'd have a professional fabricator do this for me.

well long story short, I built headers & sent them out to be welded & they got ruined. I was so pissed off that I can't do this myself & that I have to rely on someone else to really care about my project as much as I do, while of course I know that's just not going to happen.

I got frustrated to the point that I just said fuck it, I'm going to buy my own tig welder & learn how to use it.... simple, once I learn how to do all this myself I won't have to rely on anyone... no one is going to really do something exactly the way I want it done as much as I myself would...

well, when I made this decision I can honestly say that I had no idea what the hell I was getting myself into... I mean I've been able to weld for years & I thought that having the right equipment would be at least half the battle, but, now I have learned just how hard it is to actually do this kind of stuff, & not just getting it done to the point of it kinda being ok, no, I'm talking about how hard it is to be able to do this stuff really good....

I bought a tig welder about 4 moths ago now... & have since been practicing & practicing & really trying to learn how to weld stainless steel headers "the right way"... I've joined a welding forum & I've been actively seeking knowledge from some professional welders, as well as buying a lot of study material & even millers on line course, but, there is knowledge & then there is skill... just having knowledge does not always translate to automatically having the skill...

I've been told by many pro's that it will take YEARS to really learn how to tig weld & fabricate stainless steel piping & to do nice aluminum welding too... YEARS!!!

they all tell me that theres no way that you are going to just pick up a tig welder & just learn how to do this on your own. most recommend taking a course & going to school... and with THAT I may be able to be good enough in a few YEARS...

tig welding is one of the most difficult welding processes to master, & the fact that I can literally cut a car in half & weld it back together with my mig welder has no bearing & is really almost no help when it comes to mastering tig welding...

so I've been spending every spare moment for the past few months practicing & developing, practicing & developing, along with also building all the other equipment that I need to do this "the right way" too. I've even hooked up with a professional sanitary food pipe welder from the Netherlands who is willing to guide me, teach me... we've even been working on communicating & setting up a video feed through yahoo messenger so he can stand over me virtually & guide me as I weld test coupons, this is about as close as I can get to going to school...

luckily for me what these pro's all tell me don't mean squat... I refuse to believe, refuse to accept, no one will tell me what I can & can't do, I tell myself "do not believe everything you read on the internet..." I am the only one who can determine what it is that I believe I can & can't do. I believe I can do this, & in much shorter time than, gulp.... YEARS!?!?!?

so far I think I've been doing well. as far as aluminum goes, I've kinda got the hang of that... I can lay down some pretty decent stack of dimes welds & I'm comfortable with my abilities in aluminum now, enough that I have enough confidence to build my own intercoolers & piping, even build my own aluminum radiator & core support...

as far as the stainless goes, I've gotten to the point that I don't really suck so much... I mean I can now weld stainless enough for it to be functional, enough for it to not be so bad even, but I still need practice & I still need more welding time to gain more skill... I do not want to redo my headers until I have the confidence that I can do a really good job.... this is what I spend all my spare time on, trying to gain experience & gain skill by practicing & practicing... my local welding supply is wondering what the hell I'm doing that all of a sudden I'm going through tons of argon, seems I'm emptying a big bottle every week... going through a lot of gas & welding rods & stainless, just keep cutting it up & welding it back together... there is just NO WAY that I will NOT get good at this, or die trying at least:tongue (2):

so in summary, I got myself in over my head by underestimating just how much skill is necessary to be able to tig weld really well & now all I can do is keep at it till I get good enough... I need to step up my game & advance to the next level of fabricating pro... & I'm getting there... slowly but surely... any steps in the right direction are good steps..., some are nice leaps & some are just baby steps, but eventually I'll get there... I have to, & until I do my fx is nothing more that a big pile of pretty parts..., pretty yes, but also pretty useless...

I'm really trying for having it done for late spring... I hope... but, on the other hand I also do have the patience & determination to see it through no matter how long it takes... yeah there may be some times that I'm so busy that the fx project has to get pushed to the back burner, but I don't leave it there long & it really is something that I try to work towards each & every day... there is no way that I won't get this done... no way... but when? that's a little more difficult for me to say... this turned into a bigger challenge than I ever imagined... if before buying my own tig, I just found another fabricator instead, then maybe I'd be done with it by now, but, then I would still not have the skill to do it all myself, that will be the reward & for this I wait & struggle & suffer, but in the end it will all be worth it... & the skill I have gained from this should really open up the possibilities of what I can do in the future too... I've already got another 101 ideas rolling around in my head of all the things I can do now, but, gotta finish the baby steps first:smile (2):

^ Serious. I found myself holding my frigging breath....taking DIY to the next level and beyond! Wish I could help, best I could do tho' is be coffee bitch, let me know if the position opens up =) Really would like to see to the TC6 ride back on the road brother, (Probably not as badly as you).

just trying to bring some life back into this - I mean it's been another 3months of 'practice' you should be getting better and better!

I was always told, and first hand saw, that alu was a lot harder to do nice welds with; it's interesting to see that you're struggling more with ss than alu.

As for the big machines they are killer deals - It looks like most places that bought them for $4k are trying to get rid of them in favor of smaller machines that are more portable around a shop. If you don't have a need to move it around it's a great buy!

I've been itching to get back into tig welding... now if I could only get one in the size of my hobart but for the price you got the monster above for :D
