The Random Question Thread

I think ours are shaped differently yeah? VQ has it up near the windshield. I only removed the intake tube at the TB and pushed it aside to get access.

Any tips on TB removal? Those two lower bolts seem hard to get to. I've already gotten the two top ones loosened. I'm hoping to avoid removing the whole upper plenum because I need to swap the TB as quickly as possible.
No need to remove the upper plenum. I use a screw driver with an allen bit to take the lower two bolts out without any problem. The standard "L" shape allen key/wrench will not be long enough.

Sorry about that brain fade, yeah mine is all up front and easy access. Andy has the answer......

Therein lies my problem then. The L shaped one did not seem to be working optimally. I wonder if I have the right sized hex attachment for a screwdriver then? I only have 30 minutes, so maybe I'll just hope the tuner has one at his shop.

you can use the right sized torx socket at the end of a ratchet extension, forgot what size torx fits this well but I've done this several times already.... of course if you happen to have allen sockets available that's even better, but in a pinch even a torx works fine...

Used some sort of socket and about a 5 inch long 5mm hex, with a wobble end that worked perfectly once I got it lined up. Pretty simple swap, just a pain with how cramped it is.

Anyone know what the DVD button on the front do on my 08 fx? do i get to watch dvds on the nav screen? i got the factory dvd screen and player in the back.

It should play the DVD audio through the car speakers. It can also be used to play ipod through the RCA's.

to play ipod thru rca, u need the ipod to rca cables right? just plug it into the dvd player in the back? is there a way to tap into the wires from inside the center console?

Right. You can get the ipod to RCA cable adapter for a couple bucks. It plugs right into the rear DVD player. You choose your stereo settings as DVD (auxiliary RCA's: ipod). I imagine you can hardwire inside the console, but I'd definitely stick with the convenient RCA's.

You also have to hit the input button on the DVD controls below the flip down screen. I think it's input. It's whatever is all the way to the left when facing the controls. I was reminded of this last night since I had the battery unplugged and all my settings were lost.

I have heard of people doing oil flushes but haven't heard much discussion related to this on iS (something about draining the engine of the oil but then after doing so filling it up with some cleaner, running the engine for a very short time to get the sludge out) then fill it up with oil. Otherwise you mix old oil/sludge back with the new oil and instead of having very clean oil right after an oil change, you basically have clean oil mixed with some very dirty oil. Just curious on member's thoughts regarding this.

Yeah, I think it's accepted that you can't get all the dirt oil out. But of course, 95&% clean oil and 5% dirty is better than 100% dirty.

Also, if you follow regular oil changes, it should minimize sludge. Over time there will be a build up no matter what. Just depends how much you care about having a perfectly clean engine.

I wonder if you could drop the oil pan and do a better cleaning job?

A few times I've taken my parents car to different quick oil change places I've been asked if I wanted to clean it after the oil is removed but before new oil is put in for like $30 more or whatever it is. If they are asking in places like this I was wondering how common folks here are doing it.

Once I took my dads Cadillac with 50k miles in. They showed me the dipstick it was really dirty they recommended the flush I said no just oil change and they kept pushing I said no. They did the oil change. Asked me to run the engine a little with the new oil. before leaving he comes back showing the dipstick after the oil change and says and I quote. "Still dirty." with a see I told u look and put it back and i left. It was not as clean as brand new oil that's why I was curios. I know my ford dealership has asked me if I wanted an oil flush before too.

Lots of you guys care about oil so much, brands, sending even to labs, etc so I wonder why this is not an added step every so often just to ensure best performance and longevity?

When my older cars took normal 10w-30, i would do a flush with cheap motor oil of the same consistency. Drain old oil, fill up cheap oil, drive around comple times, drain that oil and put oil of choice in. kinda helped. Now that synthetic is so expensive...

^^^I have never done that and I know my oil looks reasonably clear on the dipstick even after 3,000 miles. But I never run any of my vehicles less than 1/2 an hour and I do not drive in stop and go traffic except when I am on a trip. Most of my vehicles mileage is highway miles and I do run synthetic in both of my cars..
I think the big problem is when you do short stop and go trips and when the engine does not get fully warmed up long enough to burn off moisture and deposits.
My type of driving is also easy on exhaust systems, for example I just got rid of my 1997 GMC crew cab a year ago and it still had the original exhaust with over 100,000 miles on it.

Next oil change go with Pennzoil Ultra. It is a fully synthetic oil that actually cleans the engine up very well. You can find the 5 qrt bottle at Walmart for $27. It is a higher grade oil than Mobil 1. For more info go to the forums on bobistheoilguy.com. I'm running this now for a couple of oil changes to get the most cleaning, then will switch to Pennzoil platinum(still higher rated than Mobil 1 and cost $24 for the 5qrt bottle). Pepboys was having a sale for $22 (with a $7 mail in rebate) for 5qrt jug of PP with a Bosch oil filter.

Interesting...I have heard some say to stay far from Pennzoil because they had a substance called Pectin to their oils, which is what causes the sludge and varnish.

I've heard that too, but never from anyone as reliable as the BitOG forum...
