The Random Question Thread

If you are going to do this on a regular basis, why not get the cheap vacuum pump. You don't want to go to the Dealers each time you want a sample. Or what TC said, crawl underneath and loosen your filter to get a sample.

Good call Wayne...I'm sure it's not the only time I'll do this. Plus, they recommend to drive it for 20 minutes highway (not idle as this introduces fuel into the mix and can distort results and can end up giving the user a worse indication than the oil may really be), and then taking sample from hot oil not cold. I highly doubt dealer even leaves the lot. I'm sure I would get a much better sample driving it myself and siphoning out the well mixed hot oil. I'll get it on my way home and try it tomorrow, although looks like the reviews of the product really suck and I hope I don't have the same issues:

If I get a sample from the drain it will probably be not a good mid test as it will probably contain the worst ever oil deposits. If oil is good for another 2000 miles, but if you get the bottom deposits, it could result in lab work that says go 1000 miles shorter...who knows!

For those wondering why I'm doing this - my dealer charges $40 for oil changes. This is very cheap. If the analysis comes back that it's good, then why go through more expensive oils, filters, etc, surely this engine will last at least until 200,000 worse case scenario if analysis is okay with dealer oil at specified intervals...at least that is my thought for now.

I know someone that wants to sell me a cat back exhaust from a G35, I own a FX35. My questions is would that exhaust fit my FX, are they similar or should I just buy one brand new and skip the headaches if there are any? Does anyone here know, would love it if you help me go in the right direction with this one.

First, you'll need the drive train to match(awd or rwd) in order for the y-pipe to fit. Assuming that works, you'll need to extend the tips due to the longer rear bumper on the FX.

Have you guys ever replaced the rear radius rod? Did u guys feel a difference? number 7 in the pix

No, but there is a bushing on there. If you are over... 150,000 miles I probably would change it.

i got 84k, noticed the radius rod busing is cracked, but im trying to figure out will these affect handling, besides maybe some clunk. Also its pretty tight in place no looseness when i inspected the rod.

Pull it off and see if you have any corrosion and verify that you still have a uniform range of movement. If it looks and feels good, I wouldn't worry about it. It looks to me like that bar maintains the toe angle, so if the bushing is shot you should be able to move the wheel back and forth by hand (placing your hands on the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and pulling with alternating hands). If it were corroded (most likely with a cracked bushing), then it would make noise. A creaking/squeaking/grinding noise when you accelerate or decelerate. If you can see metal through the crack, replace it asap. Either way it's not really a safety issue as the mounting bolt will hold everything together even in the event of a total joint failure.

It's only like that on 1 rear corner?
If you pick up the back, (like on a lift), and tug each of the wheels around, can you feel that side looser?
Tie rod bushings are common replacements, but I really don't hear about them on an Infiniti.

EDIT: yeah, what tchuck says ^^^

Do yall think 31mm spacers on the front would stick out too much or would it be flush? BTW I have stock 20's, I already have 25mm all around but the fronts are still a bit tucked in, so I wasn't sure if 31mm's would be too much?

Measure it by hanging a string from your fender...

Don't forget to tie something heavy at the end of the string so you get a real plumb line, but not get in the way of the wheel/tire to skew the measurement :wink (2):

I'm using a 24 gauge wire (for the $20 sub boost), but was only able to find 18-22 gauge wire taps (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103500). Is this okay to use? thanks!

Sorry for my electrical noob-ness... first circuits/electronics project ever

Honestly I don't like to use those things anyway, and always opt for soldered and shrink wrapped electrical connections. However, if you must use one, definitely get the right size. The problem with using a large connector with a small gauge wire is the possibility of creating a loose connection. The bitch about loose connections is that they often rear their ugly heads just after you've put everything back together and/or a week later when you hit a nice pothole. Your sub volume will start fluctuating wildly and the only way to correctly diagnose it is to wiggle that tap while the stereo is on. Needless to say its a PITA.

I've been trying to start a new thread in the FX community section and keep getting this error. I am posting some text with 3 image links...nothing out of the ordinary.
[h=3]The following errors occurred with your submission[/h]
  • The number of tags you tried to add exceeded the maximum number of tags by 2.
Also, have you guys noticed the other several issues (I have for awhile now but figured I'd be more vocal this time)? If you reply with a quote it turns all the font to black and then when you make it white so you can see it posted, then you can't see it in the preview. It's like a vicious nightmare. Then if you copy from a thread some text or in other situations, the font can get really messed up: color, size, everything. Also I notice after you preview images, it removes that tags surrounding it that allow you to click to enlarge it...some people don't want it automatically enlarged all the time and this happens if you preview a post with images....I could go on....these issues were none existent before the site upgrade. ugh

Can you give me the title you are trying to start the thread with?
