Another Blown Eibach Spring

I would not use Eibach in areas with a lot of snow. Us California people should be fine since we don't have to deal with oxidation/corrosion.
Agree, and I live in a heavy snow-belt area and there is a lot of road salt used on our highways and streets.

hahaha. just being biased. lol. i dont have anything against the h&r's lol. the only reason i got the eibachs is because my buddy could get them for cheaper haha

Hello Lesley,

Here is the photos of the defective/broken spring as requested.

DSC_1012 shows original drop from driver's side front
DSC_1011 shows front passenger's with faulty spring

Please forward these to Eibach for warranty inspection ASAP!
Due to the circumstances of this is my only means of transportation, please indicate this requires immediate attention.
I would like to resolve this matter a soon as possible considering the past experiences with TireRack.

This is the second case that this has happened and do not feel that this product is safe and I am requesting a replacement from another manufacture instead such as H&R.

The springs are still installed on the vehicle and will not be able to un-install them until a replacement is issued and received.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
William *******

Dear Mr. ********,

I need to verify the springs are only the fronts that have snapped & I also want to verify the address you would like the replacements sent to is:

??????????????????????????

I was informed Eibach will send out UPS Ground. If you are looking for expedited freight there is an additional cost. I can get a quote for you depending on the method you are requesting.

Thank you.

Dear Lesley,

The address is correct and can be shipped to the following address.

William ********
?????????????????

Please list all the shipping methods and time of delivery, so I can decide which service will be the best.

I can only confirm that the front spring is defective at this time...I do not know if the rears are also faulty like the previous set that was replaced.
They are still installed on the vehicle and I have not been able to have the vehicle towed to my Infiniti dealership for further inspection.

I would prefer that the whole kit be replaced instead of just individual items, since from past experience with the Eibach Pro Kits on the Infiniti FX.

I know several other Infiniti FX owners that have had this issue and Eibach replaced the complete kit...including myself.

I'm extremely hesitant to have the Eibach product installed on my vehicle after a 2nd time this issue has occurred...it is not SAFE and fortunately there wasn't an accident due to this failure.
In my opinion the extreme cold weather and/or the salt from winter months may be one of the reason for the failure.
The average timeline of these springs seems to be between 2-3 yrs. before snapping...always the front passenger's side first.

Please research this issue and please consider my request to have the H&R kit as a replacement instead.
I do not want to put my family and myself in any danger that could happen in the future due to this product TireRack sells.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,
William

I hope that TireRack will do the "correct" thing and issue me the H&R replacement...will have to wait and see.

^^that would be nice and the best if they did that, but I would bet that they just replace the Eibach springs once again.

UPDATE:

After a lengthy back & forth email conversation with Tire Rack and ending up with a call back from a supervisor...I still feel that I got "screwed"!

I ended up paying full price for the H&R kit plus shipping and Tire Rack will reimburse me for the previous Eibach kit w/shipping.
Funny that Penny (Supervisor) mentioned that the last Eibach set was on "clearance" at the time of purchase....hmmmm, I wonder why?

Tire Rack will follow up with Eibach once Eibach has received the damaged springs...hopefully it will determine that the product is defective.
I might be able to receive additional reimbursement toward the labor costs...yeah right!

But all in all I will get my H&Rs and hope that I will end up doing the right decision.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Lesley,

This is unacceptable!

After all that I have been through and still Tire Rack will not do the "right" thing by just replacing the faulty product with another product that has none of these issues!
Luckily that there has not been any SERIOUS damage to my child, wife, myself and the vehicle due this problem.
I cannot believe that Tire Rack will still want to make a "profit" from this situation by having me purchase the H&R kit at Tire Rack's retail price instead of adjusting the cost to reflect the difference.
I have been without a vehicle for a week due to this problem. I will still be without a vehicle until this problem is resolved!
This whole situation has been extremely inconvenience to me, especially due to the time of year here in Boston, MA.

I have been patient and fair regarding the decision on resolving this matter.

I would like you to have your supervisor or manager contact me to discuss this matter ASAP!

I can be reached via Tel (***) ***-****.

Thank you.

Dear Lesley,

I have no problem purchasing the H&R kit, but I shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for the difference...plus the shipping.
As being a loyal customer of Tire Rack and having this repetitive issue with a product that Tire Rack sells, I shouldn't have to pay for it!

This situation has and is causing me more problems than it should, due to the safety, time, inconvenience and cost that Tire Rack & Eibach has caused.
I shouldn't have to experience these issues for a product that guarantees a million miles warranty!

I will order the H&R kit for the Infiniti FX.
Tire Rack should reimburse me the cost of the H&R kit and the cost of shipping to the my M/C that placed the order.
Once the Fed Ex return label is received by me, I will then ship the parts included in the Eibach kit to Tire Rack.

I feel that this is fair.

I would like to state that the cost of $660.00 for installation is still out of my pocket.

Please respond ASAP, so i can place the order.

I would like to resolve this matter as quick as possible.

Please let me know your decision.

Sincerely,
William Fong

Dear Mr. Fong,

If you would like to purchase the H & R kit you may do so online or with our sales department at 888.981.3953 ext. 370. I can email you a Fed Ex label to return all the parts included in the Eibach kit. Once back we can credit your M/C end in 5975 for $ 232.00. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Hello Lesley,

What is the situation as far as TireRack replacing the Eibach kit with the H&R kit instead?
I would gladly first purchase the H&R kit and then get reimbursed for the cost /shipping afterwards instead of waiting for the shipment from Eibach.

As noted from my previous email, I do not feel "SAFE" having the Eibach kit installed on my vehicle.
If this was just an isolated incident then I wouldn't be as worried, but since this has happened again from the last replacement kit...I do not trust this product.

I have a family and do not want to put them at any risk due to a faulty product that TireRack is selling.

This issue has cost me more than it is worth.
My cost to have the previous Eibach kit to be replaced was $1320 just for the installation of the kit...that was just for swapping the Eibach springs out and to re-install the stock springs back. Then to have the stock springs swapped back out to have the Eibach replacement kit installed.

The cost of installation for this time will be $660 for the install of the replacement again, once I receive them.

I'm unemployed at this moment and do not have the finance to maintain this repetitive issue.
I really need you to help me out regarding this problem.
I'm currently out of a vehicle and don't have any other source of transportation.

Thank you again for your assistance with this matter.

Sincerely,
William

Dear Mr. Fong,

Per Eibach the freight costs are :

UPS Overnight $242
UPS 2nd Day Air $188
UPS 3 Day Air $101

The vendor has also stated they will replace your kit with a new one at no charge. The expedited freight cost would be the only balance due. Please let me know which option you would like to proceed with and I can let our purchasing department know as well as Eibach. We will also need the original kit back so please do not dispose of the parts.

Thank you.

neither rides great, better spending that money on some coilovers...

Too late for that now...H&R's are already ordered and shipped out.

Took a quick look at my FX, seems that I will have to replace my tire too (flat). Snowed today so couldn't get a real good look.
I'm hoping that there isn't any more damage...I don't have the funds to pay for all this. :err:

Reading the back and forth it really seems like The Tire Rack did not stand behind a product they market/sell. There are many examples of companies out there that choose to do the right thing when a product fails ESPECIALLY when it comes to safety. The lack of reaction or coverage simply increases the end users desire to take the issue to the next level. Very glad you were not hurt by the faulty merchandise....

Thanks Logan.

I just went ahead and purchased a new tire from DiscountTire.com just in case the tire is damaged...most likely it is from my visual inspection.
Another $152.00 down the drain...ouch!
The only problem is that it won't arrive until sometime Friday. My experience regarding UPS deliveries, I won't see it until after 6pm.

I will need to make an appointment to have the repairs done on Saturday...not sure if that will be possible with such short notice.

My concern now is to where to have the repairs done...Infiniti or local speed-shops?
The reason to consider Infiniti Service is if there is any additional damage, they will be able to repair it maybe that day...local speed-shops won't.
But the cost of Infiniti labor is way too high and Saturday appointment most likely be impossible.

Any advice?

DONE!

Had the H&R's installed at my local speed-shop (JT Motoring).

Looks like I didn't need to replace my tire...it was good!
Now I'm trying to decide if I should keep it as a spare or just ship it back to DiscountTire...I would have to pay for the return shipping.

The only problem that I'm having now is that the strut bearings were missing from the damaged spring when they installed the H&R's...where did they go and when?
Could I have been driving all this time without the strut bearings or could they have fallen out due to the defective spring?
Or did the previous installer not re-install the bearings and not have told me?

I ordered the strut bearing from InfinitiPartsUsa.com and as soon as it arrives I will have the shop install it.

Could this had/have an effect on the suspension and is it safe to drive?

Advice...please.

Here is my advice to you: I'd just bring the car back to stock. It seems you are financially struggling currently. Why waste money on making the car look good if you have other priorities.... just my thought. Too late now I suppose, but I would've requested some sort of refund and put oems back on.

No way the bearings could have fallen out. Well, I suppose under the infinite umbrella of "anything is possible" is could happen, but the odds are pretty small. The spring has no influence on the bearing in terms of installation. Rather, the bearing is held in place by the strut itself and the large nut at the top end of the installed strut. For the bearing to come off post installation, multiple severe fractures would have to occur in either the bearing race or the strut shaft. The reality is that barring a devastating impact to that particular area (like being T-boned by a train), forces sufficient to cause damage like that just don't exist. Assuming the entire bearing assembly was missing and not just the individual balls, someone forgot to install the bearing.

...
Could this had/have an effect on the suspension and is it safe to drive?

Advice...please.

The effect of running sans-strut bearing would be on your steering, as the entire strut rotates about a vertical axis when your wheels turn. Instead of having neutral, light, and smooth steering you would have one (one missing bearing or both?) side that resists rotation as torsion is applied to the strut, then possibly slips suddenly as the upper strut plate shifts to accommodate your steering angle. This could be a very dangerous situation if for example you go into a fast corner and halfway through the plate shifts, causing a sudden decrease in steering wheel resistance.

Again, the bearing has little direct influence on the spring but it seems to me that if the strut was being subjected to an abnormal amount of torsional force and was in turn flexing during normal driving conditions, that the spring could, COULD, be affected. Whether or not that is the case depends on a lot of factors. Considering Eibach's widespread reputation for snapping springs, I'd say the bearing was likely not a factor.

Personally, if I was in your place I would consider it a dangerous condition and get that bearing installed asap.

I'm not sure if I could go back to stock unless i was selling the FX...I haven't driven stock FX since 2003 (except for a very short time from the last Eibach incident). :wink (2):

Thanks for all the information.
I've already ordered the bearing from InfinitiPartsUSA.com and as soon as I receive it, I will bring it to JT Motoring and have it installed.

I personally think that the previous installer didn't install the bearing and I have been driving all this time without it and was never told. They are now no longer in business just to let you know.

I've already put over 100 miles on the H&R's and so far no problems.
When I left the shop, I did hear a slight noise from the lack of the bearing, but once I had the car washed...no more noise.
I have not experience any lack of steering so far and just as responsive as before, but due to my situation without the bearing...I just might be used to it.

My comparison with the Eibach's & the H&R's.

The Eibach's were more responsive and sporty feeling, but was a bit harsher going over uneven surfaces. They seem to be a tad lower, but H&R's might need to settle a little too.
I can't say which set I like better until I drive more with the H&R's...plus roads here in Boston during the winter are not ideal.

I'll be shipping the defective Eibach's back to TireRack tonight and wait for an update from them regarding Eibach's research on their conclusion of what is causing this issue/problem with their springs.

Thanks again for all the helpful comments...I'll keep you guys updated.
