Just realized that my rear pads are toast. It's only been 12K miles, but those miles are mostly aggressive driving in stop and go city traffic. Last week I had to take a work trip through a lot of back country mountain roads and was on the brakes pretty hard so that was likely the last straw. Weird that I never heard any wear indicators - 2 days ago I heard grinding, thought maybe it was a rock since it went away. More grinding yesterday and I did a visual inspection, rear pads are at basically zero.
Last set of pads I took off had 25K on them and they were maybe 2/3's worn. Strange that this set went so quickly. It may be because before the car mostly drove highway and my wife was the primary. Now it lives in the city and I tend to use the brakes a lot. Or because I swapped the Akebono's on at the same time as the rear pad/rotor change and the brake bias change impacted the rear brakes more.
Wish this stuff happened more often in summer. I have covered parking, but it's not enclosed and while swapping brake pads is easy, it's not fun in 35 degree weather.
