VK45 –Stage 1 Headers/JWT cams/TB/intake

I just pinged John via PM but I think its better keep this opened up for the community. My question for John was "once the fuse is pulled does ALL the power go to the rear wheels?" My tuner and my tech were going back and forth on it and they have the same question with regards to power transfer. The tune will only be effective if all the power being generated is monitored and dialed in.

I would think so, for a few reasons.

1) Attesa-ets uses a modified version of Nissan's rwd transmission. The path from the trans input to the rear wheels is the same as in the other rwd FM platform vehicles. The difference is a small portion of the output shaft that is modified to accommodate the transfer case actuation.

2) The awd FX can operate in 0:100 mode, which would imply a complete disconnect of the front transfer case. If the transfer case is engaged by a mechanism that is protected by the awd-sol fuse, then it would seem that pulling the fuse would completely prevent the TC from operating. Ergo, constant 0:100 mode.
The ATTESA E-TS™ (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive[Dead Link Removed] system utilized on FX45 and FX35 AWD uses an advanced torque split control strategy that automatically transfers optimum torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions. The system provides outstanding handling due to optimum torque distribution for front and rear SNOW MODE(50:50 up to 0:100). ATTESA E-TS™ also provides high starting traction performance and smooth, stable acceleration, especially in snow-covered or off-road situations with a 50:50 torque split at standing start.

3) I've done MANY wot pulls with the fuse in and out, and if anything the rwd pulls seem faster. Not that my butt dyno runs are empirical evidence one way or the other, but added to the above I'd be confident enough to give it a shot. You could always do the rwd tune and then log a few awd runs afterward for a comparison...

when I first read you're pm I immediately thought no problem, it goes to rwd without the front engagement, but then after refreshing my memory from some old posts I remembered that the older hydraulic attesa's never fully released the front 100% but I remember thinking our electric clutch units do release 100%. now I can't find any conclusive answer to it being 100% released but I now read about the newer R35 also never fully releases the front, and even when disconnected it still transfers only like 2% to the front drive which is just from the slight friction when released, the gtr setup is a bit different of course but maybe ours is ~ the same 2% or so?

ultimately I think the safest thing to do is to just disconnect the front drive shaft, then it doesn't even matter if the front is being fed a small fraction of the output, it won't harm a thing and it won't make a difference at the tuning end really, I think this is done all the time. here is an older awd attesa which I think transmits ~20% to the front even when disengaged and even that one is rwd dynoable. the front shaft, although it's spinning and being fed the potential for 20%, because it is not connected to anything it is obviously not causing any loss and the dyno will read just as if it was all going to the driven wheels alone because in reality it still is because the front is disconnected

key thing here to realize is we do NOT have a center dif, we only have a center distribution clutch which only couples, not a diff xso with the front shaft removed it is exactly the same as a rwd

rwd dyno, front shaft disconnected

I know the fx isn't a gtr but not nearly as much info out there with our awd setup.

also you should expect the dash to light up like a christmas tree when the car can't figure out why it isn't getting any front wheel pulses on the dyno but it won't affect the dyno tune and once it's all reset it's back to normal

I mentioned my gratitude in my PM but hoping I can make TC blush digital style. John's dedication and knowledge continues to imprees and be a centerpoint for the site and is something we can aspire to. Sharing what you know make take some of your time but the community it builds is priceless. What has Is done for ME lately? Saved me headaches and time with regards to AWD tuning! I 'm still amazed that a tuner of this caliber doesn't have all four corners covered with regards to tuning......

I get it in (possibly next week) see what the numbers say and if the output goes up as discussed. also idle, oscillation issue, SES light, MPG tweaking, etc. He also said he can make the bored TB work, hmmmmm. DragonH in Taiwan said he's running his BTB and it' been a nice increase in power. I am now thinking that my bored TB issue might have been based on incorrect tuning and possible other complications at the time.

Have you put it on the dyno yet for the hp and ft. lbs. torque? I'm still guessing 403HP with 391 lbs. torque. (I have my reasons).

Hoping to get some dyno time either this week or next. I would like to think I'm close to that but I think its much less. Did drive the FX much further today than I have been got what I consider to be a fairly accurate MPG reading on the highway of 20.7 my old best was 22.5 so no complaints. Overall riding/driving/running fine no SES lights, fluids clear. Did hear what I think may a small exhaust leak, need to get it in for that. I might consider longer HFCs or slightly more restrictive. I haul around customers from time to time and although the sound is awesome it may be a little too much so.

I had the honor to take Lance's Silver Surfer out for a drive while I was in town July 3rd. Let me tell ya, the power in this FX is unreal! I have not driven an NA FX with that much pulls from start all the way up to 90+ mph (I think, I didn't really pay any attention to the speedo when I driving it). The custom exhaust header and Nismo cat back is an out of this world note. I cannot imagine the full power and smooth ride when it is fine tuned. You're one patience man Lance and you have done a great job with Silver Surfer.

I will post some pics of our mini meet later.

Good times Andy! If the three of us could have started earlier we could have really made a night of it =) but we appreciate you ducking out on the fam for your iS bros.

you make me miss my 45!!!!!

Never too late Ojay! =)

Wow, what a journey! Took me about 2 days on and off to read through the whole story, but what perseverance! Glad it worked out in the end! I would have probably given up after the second engine failure, but glad you stuck with it! I actually just picked up an 07 FX45, coming from 06 FX35 and love the power difference, but now i'm curious as to what your ride feels like! Danger of being part of an enthusiast forum i guess.... Good stuff Logan!

^ I'm just about ready to post the readers digest version of the build including pricing and what build times someone should expect should they follow this path.....There was ONE other guy who did the cams on an M45 he experienced the same issues but I never heard if he followed through. My guess is with the potential pitfalls clearly identified this is a fairly straightforward build.

The power is very noticeable, if you are in Seattle stop by and take it for a spin.

What, I didn't know there was a package deal for test drive the Surfer. :smile (2): The added power from the Cam sure made me wanted to do mine. Let's see the bill for built Lance.
