Transgo Shift Kit Installation

Good job on the write up and on the work Andy... I wonder how much of a difference it makes. I gotta check it out at the meet.

Maybe I'll get this one day. I need to drive your car and feel it. Maybe when I hit 100K?

Sure, stop by. You know you can drive it anytime.
Really? you would wait until hitting 100K? That's like another 4 years at your mileage rate for a saving of about $80 in ATF if you do it sooner .

I think you will like it after you drive it.

Thanks Ian, I better have the tank filled on the day of the meet hurh!

Can you post a video when you get a chance how it drives in both automatic and manual mode?
Thank you !

I'll try to get one posted.

Daaaaaaamn - nice work, bro! I have this same kit installed but I paid to have it done. I combined the labor with replacing the transmission clutch plates and modifying the torque converter as well as adding a cooler so labor was spread out over all those items.

Great job.

Still can't believe you went for this, my wife and kids would be crawling all over me regarding the time...

Hey I went through a lot of soul searching (like asking Jumbo and Dr 2K lots of questions) before I did this mod, to clarify on the benefits of shift kits, not only do they give you a better crisper shift they are better for the tranny....In stock form the transmission is designed to slip a certain amount between shifts, most drivers never want to feel the shift point around time OR under load (or WOT).......that smooth shift or slipping causes excess wear on clutchs/bands and causes extra heat. A shift kit reduces the slip between shifting, reducing the wear on clutchs and reducing heat build up prolonging the life of your tranny. Sorry to jack your thread Andy, just excited that you did it man, this is a good move.

Thanks Brad. If you didn't have this install with that opportunity you had, it would not make any sense. Good call on getting it and have the cost spread.

BTW, I got in touch with Siakuo Michi on the oil catch can. Mine is in the works and should be here in about 10 days. I make some adjustment to the inlet/outlet nipples positions as I want the mount it in a different location then you have.

I know you have mentioned on here somewhere where you got the hose from. Let me know where that is when you can. I was planning to use some 5/8" and 1/2" regular heater hose.

Hahaha, I got that... I was able to spend only 2 hours each over the Friday night, Saturday & Sunday morning before the kids and wife are up. Thanks for pointing out the added benefit with the shift kit. Yes, the reduction of time in between gears reduce heat build up and wear on the clutch will prolong the life of the transmission.

Does this void any factory warranty?

What warranty? LOL. Honestly with my car. I'm way way pass warranty period. I bet it will as with most after market modifications.

Fantastic write up! Looks like a mod I would go for...maybe not a DIY, but this thread is inspiring!

Wow that's crazy! There is no.way i would do this myself because knowing my luck when i put everything back together ill have extra bolts and springs lying around.:tonguey:

Cool, Performance Werks is really close. Actually, last summer they left a business card on my car when I was parked at work and I still have it.

Yeah Andrew, I can't wait to get it tuned and dyno. Now that Ed throw in an alternative, the Unichip and a new shop (Perfromance Autowerks just down the street by you). I need to so some research. I was all set for UpRev until now!
I plan to visit them after work. I would wait for you but they close at 6pm.

Take pit stop in Chicago for 8 hours when you're in Michigan. I install it for a small fee

Funny you said that. I took lots of pictures as I go. The good thing is Transgo's instructions tell you how many bolts in each section as you go. You see those Chinese carry out containers in the back on a couple of the pics? Label them A - J, place the bolts from each section into the bucket as you go. When time comes to put things back, make sure no bolt left behind

Hmm, have they moved? They're now in Plainfield off 119th & Rt 59. The shop name is Performance Autowerks.

The shift kit is adding stiffer/stronger springs to the valves & actuators, so the real effect of the kit is higher line pressures and faster shift actuation. Less clutch slip is a side effect due to faster shift engagement (higher hydraulic line pressures) so yeah, less heat, less wear than stock.

I've actually been wanting to feel out a valve body upgrade but I have a feeling my transmission mods are complete until I blow apart this one and have to go for a fully built transmission from SFR in CA (600+whp). I'd love to go for a ride with somebody that has a VB upgrade just for a comparison.

IMO the shift kit was one of the mods I could really FEEL. I'm sure you'll love the results as I haven't heard from anybody that did not like it. When you get a chance, try to explain the difference in feel as compared to the original transmission:

Do you find you changed your driving style with the new transmission feel?

Did you notice the rpm range at which you shift before/after the kit?

Any particular rpm ranges where gear changes you find harsh or stiff?

Have you figured out how to chirp the tires? (hint - need manual shift mode )

Good luck with the Saikou, Andy. Can't wait to see your can and your installation. Great company to deal with, am I right?

Sweet! Like the new cluster too=)

How'd you take the video while driving? It's pretty steady -- you mount it?

Very nice videos!!
Response is very much better!
Do you feel any difference when downshifting manually??

I love it! It definitely one of those must have mods. Down shift just as fast.
Chris (FX45Chicago) was here having his LED signal mirror covers install. We went for a cruise afterward. He was driving my car and apparently wasn't aware that I have the shift kit installed; first thing he said was how fast the car shift into gears.

Hahaha, you could have the cluster in today.
No, I just hold the camera in my hand resting on the steering wheel.
