Toyo Proxes ST II

She was a 92 Ivory Quartz. I say was because I sold her earlier this year and not even a month later I found her totaled. I'm a CSI for the PD here and just happened to be at our pound looking for another car. I saw her from a distance and just knew. The entire front end was torn off. I have yet to contact them to see what happened but, I'm willing to bet their 18 year old had a big part in it. I babied her for years with everything updated, shiny and new. Anyway, the newer project is the FX. I've only begun by adding the Motordyne kit and the Stillen Intake. I'm looking into some sort of computer mod, the auto door lock and nav relays.

Well, was just about to place an order online and found an awesome deal for a set of shiny new Proxes on Craigslist of all places. Someone bought em to mount on a truck then got rid of the truck. $450! Got em mounted and balanced for a whopping $60 at the dealer. 200 Miles on em so far and they appear to be the best tires...completely silent! I started thinking that they were moaning at about 45mph...turned out it was the intake moaning. Great ride and good traction.

Oh and btw...my two cents concerning Discount Tire... They wanted $204 to mount and balance!!!! I argued with em for a bit...$12.50 to dismount each....$12.50 to mount each...$15 to balance each...$7 each to set the TPMS plus who knows what else...do tired of those guys gouging folks...

Here is a photo of the tread pattern of the Toyo Proxes ST II tire on my FX35. This shot was taken after about 3-5K miles have been put on them. Absolutely no wear shows thus far and the ride is the same as when I first put them on. A+ tire, still highly recommended.

This is still (IMHO) the best looking tread on any tire that fits the FX that I've seen to date. Perhaps I'm biased...

Well, I knew I would end up regretting being one of the first with these tires. I swapped wheels/tires with my mom's FX35 today. My wobble went away and her steering wheel started wobbling.

But, how do you know if the problem was with the rims or the tires?

I do not know for sure yet but I am betting it is the tires because the wobble started when I had the Toyos installed. I just kept putting off the issue thinking it was a poor wheel balance.

Oh, and also the fact that the steering still wobbles after rotating the tires. I doubt I have a damaged front and rear rim.

ISSUE: I have had my Toyos for about two weeks and I think I may return them. Town Fair Tire gives a 30 day trial period.

There is a very slight vibration, and when I say vibration, its not one that you feel through your steering wheel that could indicate a need for balancing/alignement/bent rim, etc. It is a very slight vibration that I can feel only through the throttle (gas pedal). Its very strange. At first I thought it was because the tires were so new that the deep tread was causing this, but I do not think this is the case. It is also causing a groaning noise when I feel the vibration, which mostly happens at speeds between 20-50mph.

Dont know what to do.... maybe I will try the Hankooks. I need something with good traction in the snow.

not sure if you guys noticed that different roads will cause different noises. I have the 1st gen Toyos and they are loud on some roads and super quiet on others.

If you go back to my first posts in this thread you will see I mentioned an "increased road feel," (read: vibration) though I notice it through the steering wheel and shifter. The steering also feels "loose" with these tires and was shocked at how stiff and on-center my steering felt when I swapped wheels on Saturday.

I am heading to Florida this week and when I get back, I am ditching these pieces of crap. Found a place in California that will sell me 275/45R20 Hankook RH06s for under $500 shipped.

Great, thanks for confirming. That is another thing now that you say it... on the highway I have to correct the steering constantly, where as with the RSA's I felt like the car drove itself. I am going to see if I can take them back today, hopefully get the RH06 by next week. I was also thinking about the YOKOs? hmmmm.

I have the Yokohamas ordered through DiscountDirect and they should be on by the weekend. I will let all know how they do.
I too have the 1st generation Toyos that roar on any surface, and started early on, even though we now know it was partly due to alignment and the "feathering" on the tread. I can agree that especially when I roll to a stop you can feel that vibration and "roughness" in the steering wheel and pedal.

I am sure the Hankooks are rated well for ice.etc. I just wanted a less aggressive tread after having a bad time with the Toyos.

Update: I returned the Toyo STII's yesterday. Got the Hankook RH06 and cant believe how much better they are. They completely eliminated every issue I was having with the Toyos. They are incredibly quiet, smooth, grip and handle well. I am very glad I purchased from a chain that offers a 30 day trial policy and that does price matching.

After all was said and done, they credited my account with $80 because the Hankooks were cheaper. How can you beat $127 per tire. For that price, I might get new skins every year!

Hankook FTW!
They drive the fastest N/A 35's on the board, as well as the T4T Editor's Choice. You can't go wrong!

I just ordered Hankooks so hopefully I have equal results. I should considering the issue went away when I swapped tires with another FX.

To the guys that dislike the tires and the ones that do. You should do a review on tire rack. Helping others in tire selection is a good thing, tire rack is a busy site.
