Ray's Boost

Any info would be welcome guys as i studied the car yesterday a bit more and there is not that much room for the master clutch cylinder. By the way they flywheel bolts were wrong grrrr... are from a skyline and thought after doing some homework they would fit

I think the second manual FX was a black first gen that popped up on ebay a while ago. That's all I seem to remember about it.

Ohhh well i'll make it happen any way. .....with or without feedback you know me ;-) mounted the mock-up engine and tranny yesterday....need to cut some metal of the tunnel. I found an old pic from viet so you know what i mean. ma2etuby.jpg

Good progress, Ray!
I wish you didn't have to do this so many times, but this whole build is sounding more and more exciting.

Thanks buddy. today i was thinking this whole conversion isn't that hard but gues i've become a FX specialist having worked on each part of this car...!!

Made some great progress. The Z centerconsol has to be lifting about 5 inch if i want it in the position i want. So i have plenty of room for the handbrake as the foot/emergency brake had to go because if the clutch pedal. I'm making several brackets to rise the console so it'll come close to the dash console.

nemu8y8y.jpg

I had to cut out some metal for the tranny to fit. Have to make a plate to cover up the hole for dirt/water and noise.
8urusyty.jpg

Then i drilled out the spotwelds of the footbrake brackets to make more room for the clutch pedal.

ny6a2y3a.jpg

Room for the clutch master cylinder is very narrow between the brake master cylinder and ABS unit but i got in just between and drilled the holes.

my tranny was from a right hand ( United Kingdom) drive Z. Thats no different but the pedals i got with it are.the shape.....at first i thought it wouldn't work but now it kinda works better i believe. I did keep my own brake pedal but cut of the end of the M/T version and will weld it on my own.....just need to make it more to the right an half a inch and the clutchpedal to the left and were all good.

I do not think a complete thread on this conversion is neccasary so for now i'll keep it here and try to explain what is needed.

Snapshot of how much higher i need to go. Like i said i gues this depend on anyones own taste and ideas. I was in doubt wether to go for an additional arm rest above the centerconsole cause i used that quite a lot while driving or higher the Z console a bit more hoping i can "comfortably" reach that as well.

The extension of the handbrake leaver looks kinda funky with those threads i known. At first i just wanted to use it for mock up cause it is easy to adjust height this way but think when i can get it solid enough i"ll just keep it that way.

Monday a friend of mine who is very handy with bodywork...welding etc will come by and finish up the metal work (holes, anti rust) under the dash so i can then mount the pedals Period.

Ok new development. My sheetmetal guy came by yesterday and he could't/wouldn't weld the small holes located at the clutch pedal as there was too many carpeting and vilt there so he was kinda affraid it might catch fire or such. So we used Liquid 2Component metal to fill it and now letting it set for a day.

He then saw what i was planning with the center console. Along with another friend of mine who helped me out through this whole built they advised / ordered me to stop. They said the way i wanted to mount the handbrake leaver would just not be strong anough especially with the cable in it wich i haven't tried yet. And with all other brackets to rais the console it just wouldn't be strong enough or fit right.

He suggested to finish up the engine and pedals so i can drive it and then bring it to his place so he can the weld in the complete Z metal tunnel so all will fit a 100%. I explained to him it needed to be raised about 5 inches but he said that would be a problem ( done this several times ).
He disliked the idea of me using the Z console and losing our oem armrest so his suggestion was to marry the FX and Z console using our FX console for base and then cutting out the Z parts where needed and marrying them together.
This will probably delay my updates as i cannot go forward with this before the car is running again. But in the end it will work out for the best i gues also.
I tried the way i was working on right now as it was quite some work and already had some much help with this whole build that i was almost affraid of asking for more.....

Update: i can almost 100% confirm our mid tunnel is the same as a Z. Esspecially if that Z would be a A/T as well. If you search 350Z A/T > M/T swap you would find a thread on my350z that shows the Z guys needed to do the exact same modifications as i did. Cutting the tunnel for fitment and all.
We put the manual tunnel on top of my exhisting tunnel and even saw the threads on wich you mount our wiring harnes were exactly at the same position.
tugubuma.jpg

Look at the right side of the tunnel you'll see the threads and simularatie in form of the tunnel.

My friend wanted to keep the FX konsole for base and add the top of the z konsole to match and keep that oem feel.py5uvaje.jpg

We found out the handbrake would then come quit close to the armrest. Some maybe remember i have 2 A/V controllers there and we are going to use one hole for the brake leaver to run through
yvuqe4y7.jpg

At first the idea was not the put any leather / suede or paint on there but we now need to cut out several things like spacing for the hand brake so you can grab it. Gonna plastic weld some together and then make it to one final piece before working it all of with paint or leather....don't know yet.

Here a quick idea of our plan

So got the tunnel in. We decided to push it a little bit for forward so its a little off center but was because of the location of the ABS unit wich is mounted just behind the new piece and will become an issue to put the wiring back in. cut out the top and drew the same size on the new console. Together not something i would have done myself but with knowledge on welding and sheetmetal this is doable

The handbrake leaver was a little bit too much on the left and was hitting the plastic of our oem console (where i have thos A/V controller holes). Because of the shape in the tunnel we could not move it over half an inch. So we cut out a piece so we could. uryju5ev.jpg
This is how it looked like oem:
