Adding a resonator will help some, but the rasp will still be there. I had a test pipe on my old car (aftermarket turbo) and w/ the straight through muffler, the noise was horrible. It idled nicely, but at any kind of throttle, the rasp was ridiculous. I added one 18" resonator and it got way better. The rasp was still there, but it was maybe 30% better, the overall noise level was just lower. Then I got another resonator and replaced the test pipe w/ it, that made things livable. Not great, and definitely not something I'd want to commute with every day, but it was tolerable for short distances. The resonator doesn't so much remove the rasp itself, it just quiets everything down so you don't notice it as much.

I don't think it's the internals vibrating because rasp is loudest with test pipes. it sounds like something rattling but it's not. factory cats have a high cell count and much longer cell blocks and a higher build thickness of the substrate coats which also restricts the cells that much more, high flow cats are using less cell count and shorter cell blocks and much less precious metal wash coat film thickness to increase flow but filter the rasp less... I'm not too sure if adding a resonator to the mix would help...

I have the largest resonator I can fit (the third in this system) installed right now. It helped a little with the rasp and a lot with the drone. Here's a pic:

Right. :top:

I was told it had something to do with the fact that it's a V6 (my old car was a VQ as well). Since it's 2 banks of 3 cylinders each, it will be raspy. A V8 has obviously 2 banks of 4 cylinder so it will be slightly smoother while an inline 6 is much smoother. Similar issue w/ the first Vipers, they had the side exit exhausts so each bank had their own separate exhaust. One of the reasons they went to the rear exit for a while (other than the heat issues of stepping over an exhaust pipe) was to improve the sound. To be honest, my car sounded worse than a 4 cylinder Honda which was slightly embarassing.

so now I wonder, what actually produces the raspy sound? never had anything like this on old american v8's with no cats...

With the Stillen, there was enough room to reinstall the tower brackets on top, but the GTSpec brackets are much thicker. You need to remove them and keep them somewhere should you decide to remove the STB.
