What did you do to your FX / QX70 today?

When I had an exhaust leak it was ridiculously loud in the cabin at any throttle, and also made a lope lope lope cam sound. I think one of my y-to-mid bolts had fallen out somehow, if I remember correctly.

What did it sound like?

The leak was small but noticeable. Idling you cant really hear it, only feel the air coming out from where the pipes meet. Driving away though there was a bit of a 'buzzing' noise.

Theres also this phantom hissing sound under the car while idling, under load, etc. It was there when i had the flowmaster and still there now with the GReddy and upon some quick searching, it seems as if that sound is normal though

Weird. I'm trying to diagnose a ridiculously loud rasp in mine, but it doesn't sound like what you've described. How do you like the greddy and how does it compare to the flowmaster?

Honest opinion - at first i was upset at the GReddy cause it is QUIET and i was use to the loudness from the flowmaster. However, ~1 month later I'm very happy with the exhaust.

In-cabin Noise: While cruising, windows up, the volume is similar to stock. Windows down, you can definitely hear the GReddy but its not loud/'bass-y' as the flowmaster. More defined and toned. When you go WOT, it still screams, but not to the extent the flowmaster did.

From the outside: Never heard my car driven with the GReddy till this week. It is definitely loud from the outside even when you are under medium load. What i like most is that in-cabin is quiet, while outside it is still noticeable.

In terms of loudness, i would rate the flowmaster a 7/10 and the greddy a ~4/10. Can try to get you more soundclips if you interested, but my video cam may not be as accurate especially to a audio-expert :wink (2):

What rpms do you hear the rasp at? Do you have a soundclip?

It's ok, I was mostly just curious. I'm definitely over the conversation stifling volume level but still want to be able to hear it. My perfect world scenario is a 3" system that's about 60% of the Flowmaster's volume.

No sound clips yet, but the rasp occurs at any/every rpm when I go above 25% throttle. It's so bad that I'm driving the wifey express until I figure out which part of my setup is causing the problem. I went from a fully stock exhaust with the Flowmaster muffler to a stock ex manifold->Kinetix HFC's->Megan Y-pipe->custom 3" mid-pipe->custom 3" rear section with Dynomax muffler (single 3" in, dual 3" out)->unresonated 5" tips. The audible result is a slightly lower overall volume, exactly the same drone I had before, and this insane rasp. I then added an 4" dia x 18" resonator which lowered the volume of the rasp by about 50%, but it's still 100% too much for my taste. The sound at start-up and idle however is perfect. Figures... :tongue (2):

I'm thinking about ditching my AAM cats for Berk. I like the idea of the mounting tabs, and these cats make funny noises too often. Although I've set aside today for FX work so maybe I'll find the source of the problem.

Short Story: Did my own first oil change on this car, actually the first oil change I've done myself on any car. Found Pennzoil Ultra for $27, and got the Bosch Distance + oil filter for another $11 at Walmart. Holy Moly it makes the engine run sooo smooth compared to that crap oil the little places put in.

Long Story:

Wife and I were running around yesterday getting last minute gifts. I ended up at harbor freight to pick up their 3 ton aluminum jacks they had on sale for $34. When we got home, the wife notices oil on the ground. Crap, my babies sick!.... please don't let it be red fluid.....please don't let it be red fluid....damn what am I saying, any fluid on the ground is bad! I get under the car...cause I get to use my new jack stands, (coincidence?) to find a pretty big leak around the oil filter. It isn't loose at all, I guess the seals are bad or the filter failed. Open the hood and find more oil by the oil cap. The Jokers who did my last oil change, approx 2500 miles ago, didn't tighten my oil cap down. So I actually have 2 leaks! The oil cap leak looked slow, and was mostly caught by the manifold and the groove in the engine where the spark plugs are (fricken hard spot to clean out oil from!) The oil filter leak looks pretty bad, and was all over the splash shield and crossmember. So ended up having to do my own first oil change. Which is actually the reason I bought the jack stands in the first place, but I didn't expect to use them for another 1000 miles. Checking the oil, it was at the low end of the dipstick...approx 3 qrts low. Going to Bobistheoilguy.com, found out Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum is all the rage. So picked up the Pennzoil Ultra at Walmart for $27 and got the Bosch Distance+ oil filter for another $11. This stuff makes the engine soooo fricken smooth..but I guess any synthetic over the crap oil they use at little places will do that.

I believe Kinetix are lowest on the list. I'm sure they are the cheapest by about $100 too, of all the major manufacturers.

Hmmmm, I read tons of stories about the Berks being raspy, causing CEL's, and falling apart inside, and the opposite about the kinetix. What's up with yours? You have a CEL too, right?

Yeah, I think the left side was throwing a code.

I want to say the Berk's were bad at first, but were then redesigned or something. Pretty sure they are made in USA, and I'm sure the warranty will cover any issues. The big thing for me is those mounting tabs like the stock cats have. My exhaust is basically hanging from the Header to cat bolts, and whatever the rear section hangers are.

Both the Berks and Kinetic are on V2 now iirc. As far as I found Berk has decent customer service and always honors their warranty.

Are you worried about breaking a manifold stud? I found lots of concern about that but very few actual cases. The one that springs to mind was in fact the result of bottoming out, which isn't really a concern for us.

How is the sound with yours?

I'm more worried about the pipes breaking. I get this weird resonance when really getting on it from a standstill, and part of me thinks it is due to the pipes moving around from the sudden movement. Sounds pretty good any other time. There's some weird noises at the usual 2.5-3k RPM like people report often. I plan to get it up on jack stands today and go over the whole exhaust again. Sounds like it's loose somewhere again.

Here's a clip for the sound. I think it's pretty damn loud haha. I have a vid on the dyno but it doesn't sound like I would expect.

Fawking bird, but this is probably one of my better videos:

And this one is good for the shock value:
