VQ Throttle Body Spacer Mod

I dont think a tune is necessary - Dave have planned on getting a tune even before the TBS. I think it would be helpful to get one, I dont think its necessary.

Flip thru this thread.....its nice and long.

Lots of arguements about this and that.
But I talked to Dave last night and he seems to like it and the paper work seems to speak for itself.

The Grooves on the Spacer are different - Not sure if that will make a huge difference, but there were some guys in that thread that had bought the ebay versions and didnt get the same results - so I guess the grooves do help some how.
This the one that GTO-DAVE has:

This is the Ebay version:

The inside grooves are totally different. Skim thru that thread if you get a chance - pretty interesting stuff.

Thanks for the link. i guess most of the people that did this mod didnt do a tune, but maybe they were unaware it was throwing off their A/F. would running rich affect my motor?

Dave, are there any more of these TB spacers left? if i can feel safe running this without a tune i would defiantly be down to get one.

ye, I'm trying to get one too...but where?
I hope Will doesn't mind me posting his PM:

I sent a PM to OCG35 (the guy that was doin the group buy) and heres his response to me:

There are a few with one of the beta-testers that are slated for retailers and performance shops for testing... I checked to see if any could be sold and all but blue are available... the GB price is closed, so the silver is now $85, anodized red or black is $90 (which is still cheaper than MSRP) - shipping is $10 – so the total is $95 or $100 depending on what color you want. If you live in CA add $7 for tax.
If you want one send PayPal payment to vqtbspacer@hotmail.com – be sure to put your user name and color choice in the subject line and real name with addressed in the shipping area.
If/when you send payment, let me know here so I can follow-up for you.
im going to think about it over night but i will probably be ordering a silver one...hey $100 for a proven mod cant hurt can it?

That's cool that Mike will sell one. I like the lil' mod. Tune is not necessary for the gain as the dyno shows, & I was planning to tune anyway.

You could always get tuned by TS, but ya need to send it in. Are there not any good tuners up your way?

Tadashi is amazing. They build Nissan race motors over there, & he does all the tuning. I dont believe there's anyone better for the job.

Also, I dont think running rich is very good for any engine. . . . Detonation thing

Something I was reading on running rich:

Let's first understand what it means to have a rich running car. Engineer's have calculated what is known as the stoichiometric mixture of air and fuel for our passenger cars today. The stoichiometric ratio of the amount of air to fuel to work best is 14.7:1. This 14.7:1 ratio of air to fuel is the best ratio for emissions; “… hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are at their combined lowest levels.”3 This ratio represents how many parts of air and fuel are mixed together. So we can see that 14.7 parts of air are mixed with 1 part of fuel. This is the best compromise for power and cleaner exhaust for passenger cars that have to meet pollution standards. The more fuel you add to the air the "richer" your car's mixture becomes. Therefore the as the ratio gets smaller, i.e. 13:1, your car runs richer. Run extremely to rich and you will loose valuable horsepower and will foul spark plugs and cause other engine problems. Running to rich is definitely better than running to lean.

ahhh i see...so the TB spacer increase the A/F ratio which actually causes the motor to run lean correct? which is worse than running rich

i do not know of any tuners in my area, i do not even know if there is an AWD dyno in the area either, i would have to talk to a few performance shops and find out.

You dont need a dyno to tune your car. A tuner will hook up his equipment, & run the car. He'll get all the A/F info he needs. Then he can add/take away as needed. Dyno will give you the numbers of before & after . . cuz we're always curious of the gain. TS cannot dyno AWD either.

Thanks for the dyno results...

gto-dave,

Your before and after tune dyno results are indeed good. Has your FX's driveability improved like we thought it might?

One correction for the record. The Throttle Body Spacer isn't my mod. A good friend of mine sent me one to test and I felt obligated to do so. Imagine the look on my face when it actually added power to my G35 (and no it doesn't add turbulance as such).

Anyway I'm told there's over fifty throttle body spacers now installed on G35s and 350Zs--and one on an FX35.

There are now eight dynos that I've been privy to see. Six made power, two didn't. Of those two, one air-fuel was totally messed up. The thing seems to like the engines with certain high air flow & exhaust gas flow modifications better than the stock engines.

The dyno score card:
High HP 12.2
High torque 9.1
Average HP 5-7
Average tqe 3-5

Your results on your FX35 could be different.

Thanks Dave!

So it looks like I'm on the higher side of things. Dont know what it does with my overall tune, but I'm sure it adds more than my intake. Drivability? . . Much better after a good tune (not crediting the TB Spacer by itself, but collectively with all my mods). Tadashi rocks!
I got the chance to drive without the TB Spacer today cuz I went into the stealership to check my TB (was idling too high, & throwing CEL). Ends up, all it needed was a reset on the idle/volume learn with the consult. Idle back to 650, yay. As soon as I got back to the office, I slapped the TB Spacer back on. It's about a 20 minute install with my setup. You need a stubby (small) ratchet with a 5mm hex bit (look for an extended hex, cuz the average size ones have a hard time clearing the TB assembly).

So I considered this a test by driving back to back, with & without the spacer, . . then back to the spacer. There is quite a noticable diff with it on, & the motor deff. sounds different. I absolutely love this little mod. From the way it performs, to the sound it makes. . . & no, it's not in my head. Thumbs up on a solid & inexpensive mod.:biggrin::biggrin:

gto-dave,

I can also feel (and test) the TBS difference on my modified G35 A/T Sedan. I drove down the hill to Cal Speedway today to check out the lay of the land with Aaron (Speed Ventures) and Ted (Team Transport). My G, TB Spacer and all, sure runs stronger at lower altitudes.

By the way, Speed Ventures, Team Transport and Nissan Sport have teamed up to do the Nissan Performance Festival on December 1st and 2nd. They'll be five major activities offered over the two days.

1) Time Trial/TimeAttack
2) Open Lapping Track Sessions
3) Autocross Circuit
4) Driving Clinic/HPDE (High Performance Driving Event)
5) Toys for Tots Show & Shine on December 2nd.

We'll post our flyer in the next few days.

If you can't wait for our flyer checkout www.NissanPerformancefest.com and click on the events you want to register for.

Is this the same thing as what Shady posted this morning?

Ok just sent payment to OCG35...hope to get one soon...I'm eager to find out "cool whizzing sound" that Dave is talking about. Yes...I do miss my Turbo sounds. ;)

Min, are you going to the track with us on the 27th? and to the picnic this Sat?

You wanted to see how fast that 350z engine was so this would be a good chance to see it in action against other 35's.
