Transgo Shift Kit Installation

I am glad I am convincing others. :smile (2): Too bad none of us lives close enough, to do this together. I will wait till spring when I have some time off to install it with a new roll of Bounty!

Are the trans the similar with my g and fx? I wanna say identical but I don't recall.
Similar, yes. The FX, G, and other models use the RE5 transmission. (Not sure which years you have). The difference is in the valve bodies. They are not simple plug and play against each other).

Well valve bodies against other G's of different years don't always work either. That was proven on out boards a while back.

The FX/G/Z valve bodies are the same for a given period. Early models have the TCM separate. Then they integrated that in '04.5 I think. Then they made some other changes, but I think there's only 3. So if you get the right one, it is interchangeable. I'm running a VB from an '06 350Z - bought the whole thing with Stillen VB mod installed. Direct swap and it's working perfectly.

Hey Guys Not trying to piss on your parade but I have a couple of concerns and were wondering your opinions on them.
according to the Transgo website it says the kit for the Nissan trans that is in the FX/G/Z is for turbo or supercharged application. to include "Hot Rod" or "Street Show off"
Are there any concerns, gripes or issues that have arizen for the naturally aspired vehicles that have this kit installed?

Some people don't like the firm shifts. Most of the time it's not noticeable unless you're WOT, but sometimes for whatever reason, you can be at part throttle and it will snap off a shift and it almost feels like you got rear ended.

I had one as I mentioned in my post above (Stillen, not Transgo but same thing). It was fine while I had it, but unfortunately a solenoid in the VB itself failed. Totally unrelated to the mod, but I ended up having to swap back to stock. I really don't miss it at all. I got it with the intention of boosting my FX later on, but then decided against it. For N/A applications, it's really not necessary. The firm shifts are fine, but it doesn't make your car any faster. It's almost the same as putting a grabby aftermarket clutch on a manual. It's great if you make enough power to need it, but otherwise it's not necessary and it makes daily driving a bit more annoying.

I'm not against the VB mod, I had one on a previous car as well. But that one was boosted and the mod was absolutely necessary and made the car drive better. On a bolt on FX, it really doesn't do that much. Just my opinion and it's different than most here as a lot of people swear it's the best mod they've ever put on the car. Personally I would modify everything else first, the VB is a more involved install than say an intake.

It might prevent flare ups when towing, but I don't know if it would help that much. Really, if you're not at full throttle it doesn't do much. Hopefully you're not full throttle much while towing a trailer...

The transmission cooler is most important for towing I think.

A few of us have the TransGo and I love mines, but I do believe that once you tune the FX all the roughness between shifts will smooth out. It is a bit harsh in the beginning but you get use to it and it sort of tames down a bit over time. Someone, mention that there were benefits to the life span of the tranny with this mod, but that could be hearsay.

When drove in La_fx35 FX after the tune the transition between shift felt almost seem less.

Transgo shift kit question...

I talked to a shop that recommend me not doing the Transgo shift kit because he said at 150,000 miles which is roughly where I'm at, it may damage the transmission or other components. And I talk to another shop who said it would run me about $800 just for labor. Does either one of those two statements seem accurate?:disapointed:

Well I don't know about not doing it at 150,000 miles. I put mine in at about 90,000 miles and I' at 190,000 miles now and the trans still going strong.
$800 sounds about right for the installation.

Wow, wish I were a bit more mechanically inclined to tackle it myself. Maybe if I get bored one month I might try it. haha I've seen this thread before and just could not remember price or good or bad for high mileage. I would say at $200 for the shift kit and do it yourself probably sounds like worthwhile but at $800 just for labor not sure, might hold off a while and take care of a few other things first.

Thanks la_fx35.

I must have been around 150k when I got TransGo. Now at 190k and never any problems.
I think I paid $850 for parts and labor. It's best to do at the time your trans needs a drain and fill since you're dumping the fluid anyways.
All in all, I'm very happy with it.
