2 questions:

My mom needs a new car so my mom and I are getting her one Friday. The old 2000 cadillac deville DTS just has too many problems and my dad no longer can drive. The biggest issue is it's leaking antifreeze from the manifold supposedly, but I haven't seen it yet. Just had new brake line put in by the dealer whole thing was $700. We don't have time to try to sell it to a private seller with my dad being so sick. Anyway, so we will need to trade it in, but I was thinking of temporarily patching up the leak if possible. I heard that there is a product you can buy that helps leaks on cars....how long it lasts or how good it is I have no idea, but the idea is to have it ok enough to be able to even get to the dealer and not leave a big ass puddle in their lot when trying to get hopefully something decent for the car. Any ideas? I know it's hard without knowing exactly where and how much is leaking. Supposedly it's not very very bad, but bad, but that's all that I can get from my mom and I want to prepare as much as a I can before I get to my parents because then I won't have much time for research and questions.

Also, it's a 2000 loaded deville DTS with 85,000 miles. Has everything but the moonroof. Even has the chrome wheels and everything. Anyway, the passenger window glass won't stay up and won't go up and down and the issue with the manifold (dealer wants about 1,000 to fix, but a guy can do it for 300 supposedly, but just not possible with me out of town). Car has been in an accident before so carfax I'm sure is not clean. I'm guessing the car is probably worth $5,000 to private then with the issues. Have no idea what I should try to get from the dealer when negotiating and getting a new car though since I've never gotten rid of a car that way before but we don't really have a choice with the situation. So what do you think the dealer will give and what is reasonable to try to convince them to give?

Can she see where there leak is? If she can see it have her take a pic and email you so we can see how it can be patched.

If the dealer doesn't give you the amount you're looking for, you can try donating it and using that as a tax deduction. Just throwing out another option.

The stuff you're thinking of is called StopLeak, but its the most ghetto of all the fixes. Its a temporary fix to hold you over until a real repair can be performed. Seriously bad karma to StopLeak a car to sell it for more money.

H_A is right - try to get some pics. A legit fix could be as simple as cutting the cracked end off a hose and refitting it...

Dealer wants $1,000 to fix the problem. I doubt it's a hose. They did mention manifold. Ironic thing is that it is leaking much more than it was before it went to the dealer. I've always hated dealers and wish I could help my parents more but you just don't know mechanics these days unless you are an auto guy.

Speaking of karma I can count more than 10 times mechanics have or attempted to swindle me or my parents or my wife here not too long ago. At the end of the day they are probably going to get a $6,000 car for $500 and a manifold problem that will cost them $150 to fix at most. I just need a way to get the car from one dealer to another while checking out cars and getting it appraised for trade in.

My point is that it could be something simple. Modern dealerships employ children who read service routines from computer screens. Get a repair order from the dealer and take it to a real mechanic to fix. Shouldn't be hard to find a good Cadillac mechanic in MI...

Okay, I don't really know where to ask this question but this seems like somewhere I'd get some advice quickly. While swapping my factory foglight bulbs to HID I noticed that one of my subharness plugs seemed pretty bad. The car has always flickered the passenger side foglight and then turned off. I called the dealer and they quoted me $32 for the subharness but the guy said he didnt have a good picture on the screen so he couldnt insure that it was the right part. Has anyone dealt with this? Its just the plug that goes to the foglight to the main harness I believe.

From memory, the harness is a female. The fog/bulb is a male. I would double check.

hmmmm if that's the case then I think I have two spair cables of these. I bought them as a spair for the HIDs. One side is female and the other side is male. I brought them over to my uncle's shop to install them but he told me I got the wrong ones so they've been sitting in my room ever since then. They are these wires.

In that case you have both connector. Just snip off the melted connector and swap with the right one.

I'm visiting my parents in Chicago. I've been out of state for so long that I've lost touch of good mechanics around my parent's area and my mom hardly drives well and doesn't drive on the highway and gets lost past 1 mile and I'm trying to make sure she doesn't get swindled like she has so many times from mechanics because of the state she is in.

We'll see Thursday night what we are dealing with and hopefully I can patch something up so that my parents don't get raped and thrown in the dumpster, but instead hoping just severely hurt by the dealer's trade in value.
