Steering wheel shake fixed

What kind of spacers? Are they not hub centric?

I bought these and used them on our G35 Coupe. They are hubcentric and fit the hub (FX) perfectly, but they have about 1mm of play when you set them inside the wheel. I have tried everything thinking I could get the wheel to center on the studs. I have had these on and off about 4 times attempting to find the perfect install but have been unsuccessful. Guess these will get cleaned up and posted on Craigslist. If anyone is looking for some decent 20" Sport wheels, let me know and that will help speed along the wheel fund!

BTW, happy belated B-Day Chedman13. :top:

So sounded like the spacer you have is hub centric to the FX at 66.1 but the hub size on where the wheel seat on is a custom size. That's not good. Wheel shake is destined to happen when you have that much (1 mm) play.

Easy fix, measure the wheel diameter, probably around 67.1mm so then you will want to buy a 66.1 ID and 67.1 OD hub ring.

I didnt have that shake when I had the stock 20"s on but now that I have aftermarket 20"s I have the steering wheel shake at about 65/70 mph. WTH :1confused:

If the tires are wider or the offset is further out then any looseness would be amplified I went through this as well. Just needs tightening as long as its not an allignment or balance issue

what would need tightening? I had the wheels balanced with that hunter force balancing and my tires are the pirelli scorpions and they are the standard size that come for the stock 20"s

Probably a balance issue. Fx is very sensitive. Hunter road force is great, but you need a good tech too to do it.

For over two years I went through having a wheel straightened,Road Force balance, Allignment and still the 50 to 60mph shake persisted. I thought it was my 22" rims because when I ran the stock wheels the shake was gone. But what was really happening was that as the wheel gets wider and the offset is further out any looseness in the steering system is amplified. I was so amazed at how easy this fix was after all this time. A lot of others took theirs into the dealer and they were not able to fix the shake issue. One of the best DIY's ever:tup:

Hey John, do you repair rack and pinions? :smile (2):you wanna know something funny dealers dont know a thing when it comes to rack and pump, unless they hear a noise or something evident is present then they dont know what is wrong and will blame on a random part. Hopefully my rack is messed up, pump will usually make a sound right? if its going out, steering wheel will get real tight?

not really, but what i noticed, everytime i loosened the bolt it with real tight, like its cross threaded or theirs some kind of glue and wont let it loose. Well last time i touched the bolt, it came out like a charm, i didnt get why it would get real tight.

So, find anything that may cause the shaking?

No it takes special tools to rebuild the rack and pinion and should be done at a reputable front end shop. And yes it could get tight if bad. One thing to remember is to NEVER loosen the rack tension bolt out too far or damage could occur when turned back in.

so me taking out the bolt might of damaged the rack?
Maybe ---here's the deal the tnsion adjuster has a flat two sided taper that sits around the rack when turned in the taper presses on the rack and as it is turned in it takes the side to side play out.If backed out too far (two or more turns) the adjuster or rack could turn so the steering gear is not meshed into the rack when tightened This sounds like why it may have been loose when you adjusted it.Did it turn in a ways when it was loose?

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove cylinder tubes from gear housing assembly.2. Remove rear cover cap from gear housing assembly.3. Measure adjusting screw height from gear housing assembly, then loosen adjusting screw.
CAUTION:
Do not turn adjusting screw more than twice.
Replace steering gear assembly when adjusting screw is
removed or more than twice.
