Sons Car

its very true what threezero stated , kids ur sons n my age are %80 drive recklesly and %100 overestimate their abilities. i learned my lesson , n i got many friends that have gotten into bad accidents .i say give him the FX its safer and bigger . its an suv gives him less tempting to speed than the m5 .

saw this thread this morning and i was going to post this link.

I don't think i'm in the best position to say things like this....

My parent's brought me my first car when i was 16 too. it was a brand new (at the time) rav4. crappy car imo but it was better than what most ppl have at my age in my school.

i end up speeding down a busy road with 2 passengers and totaled the car. I was the only 1 in the car with seatbelts.....

luckily nobody was seriously hurt.

on the other hand, if i had my wish back than and my parents got me a m3 or something. I would of been dead already

it really isn't abt who pays for the car. I know 16 yrs old drug dealer that brought their fast whip with their own money and i also know 16 yr old with cars powered by mommy and daddy.

80% of them drive recklessly and 100% of them overestimate their abilities.

take it from me, don't get your son a fast whip for a first car if you value his life. at 16 its in his blood to test limits and show off. after he's got a few yr of driving experience, feel free to treat him to any nice car you want, only than will he really appreciate the car and hopefully appreciate your gesture as he is a very lucky kid

+1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 on this.. Unless your kid is someone who really doesn't like driving and at the same time doesn't like to lend/trust others on driving his car, don't get him something fast.. My first car was a BMW 3.18ti.. Was not fast but fast enough to get me in multiple accidents.. Two of them were major. DON'T get your kid something fast. Let him grow up into his 18-19s and then treat him good..

my 12 year old tells me he wants a saleen s7 when he gets his licence  I tell him, nice to want  he'll be getting a car as a first car that even if he floored it for a while he won't be setting no land speed records if I have anything to do with it..., I know what I did when I was a kid & I know how much fear I had at that age, my father couldn't stop me cause I was buying gto's & chevelles without him involved, but if I have anything to do with his first car it will be very timid...

I didn't have my own car until I was 27yo...:embarrassed:

If you are going to spoil him like that then you might as well do it right and get him the E39 M5. LeMans Blue of course.

i used to own a e39 M5 deep blue with black interior. had no resonators and that thing screamed! i wish kept it haha. i am really thinking now about not getting him a car or even giving him one. im thinking 18 now for sure. thanks guys alot

-1 on the 100% overestimate
+1 on FX being bigger and safer

I honestly believe the FX is a tank and I feel at least 30 times safer in the FX than in my Kia Rio. With that said, please keep that in mind gmgagne

Oh and I don't know your son, but I don't see a problem with giving him the FX.

He's gonna hate us :embarrassed:
No action for the privelidged kid . . but all kidding aside, you're a gr8 dad

i just talked to him, and he is understanding of what you guys are saying, and he respects all of you and he cares what you all say. im sure he is kinda upset inside but he is willing to what for the safety of himself hes a good kid  Thanks again guys

Being raised with hardcore traditional Chinese parents, there was no such a thing as "wanting" a car at 16. So 1997, I was happy to be driving the old 87' Toyota Tercel, baby steps to a better car, you savor that good feeling.

But, if you can afford it, why not...your son should drive a reliable car that brings honey attraction too.

I agree with everyone.
I remember my first car was a used 1979 Celica.

Those were so awesome......same body as the Supra right?

I mean the real story, as in what the kids would have said if they hadn't all died. What REALLY happened that night.

He took his dads car. His 4 friends piled in. He was driving at very high speeds on the runway at 3am in the dark. He somehow missed seeing the 85 ft embankment. He was going so fast that the car literally took off and hit a tree mid flight. The car, and all its passengers, ended up strewn across the field in many little pieces.

If they survived?? I guess they probably would have all started a cult chanting and dancing around the blue and white propellor. Praising it for its godly safety features and vault like build quality.

I know. I'm still waiting to see those pics remember...

.
No, I know the story as what the reporters have said and the investigators determined. I mean I would like to know what happened from the perspective of being there. Were they drinking? Were they just being stupid? Did someone just make a terrible mistake? etc. I read the whole thread on the M5 forums and the kid seemed a little out of his league, and apparently thought nothing would happen to him. Guess he was wrong.

there is a reason why young new male drivers have to pay more for insurance and SUV have higher insurance. SUV give the driver a false sense of security, no doubt the FX is a tank but this sense of security can cause a new inexperience driver to try and attempt dangerous moves.

Not all 16 year old will crash and burn but you have to agree testosterone + inexperience + high power car is not a good mix. As any parent i think they rather their son not get in any accident to begin with.

Case in point, a few months back my ex's frd, a 18 yr old international student with a daddy brought hummer H2 decided to race a porsche 911 down SFU mountain (don't know how he even expect to win....) flip the hummer to the opposite lane and the whole thing caught on fire.

All he learn out of that is that SUV is built like a tank and than the H2 is not fast enough.

last I heard he is thinking of getting his dad to get him a cayenne turbo.

I stand by the 100% overestimate ability statement. how can any kid with maybe just a few hour of experience behind driver's ed's corolla claim they have absoulute ability in handling a 300hp machine under any circumstance and condition?

The OP's sons seems to be a good kid and not a cocky spoil bastard like my ex's frd. I'm sure he will understand and work his way up to a nice fast ride that he will respect cherish and not endanger himself and other people on the road.

an SUV gives a kid less tempting to speed than a car . especially an FX . an FX is comfortable and smooth ridding and the audio system is awsome . all u wanna do is just cruise and enjoy the ride . and i dont care what u say an suv is bigger and safer . so ur telling me if u crash in a car and in a suv its the same . yea sure ur getting pretty messed up in the car . as an SUV is higher ,and bigger and stronger chasis then a car .

no 16 year old is gonna race a hummer with a 911. unless hes retarded or something . i think that story is kinda BS . thats just common sense.

There are always negatives to big suv's though. The only wreck I have ever had that was fault was when some guy decided to turn right immideatley after a left turn and stopped before turning. It was wet and my large Tahoe could not stop in time once I rounded the turn and realized this dude was just sitting there. Not a big wreck at all, but I bet my Volvo would have stopped in time. I remember the ABS kicking in just because I was trying to brake on a slight decline to turn.

i kid you not the story is real, some people from a local forum took pictures of the burnt up hummer, see if i can dig it up.

no what i mean is yes a SUV is safer, but the whole point is to not get into an accident in the first place. Actually I've only own SUV and while the FX is the best handling of all that i've own, my parent's e320 boat still handles better stops better and have less blind spot while driving.

What i was trying to say is SUV could make the driver over confident especially in bad weather (heavy rain and snow). In fact when I ask the insurance guy why SUV cost more to insure that is exactly what he told me.

OT question, is it just on the second gen or does the first gen also have huge blind spot where the mirrors are? its especially worst on left turns. I though its becuz i'm short but my cousin also noted the same blind spot and he's at least 185cm

well no car nor suv is safe in the snow or rain . thats just common sense . but ok w.e . there must be some really retarded drivers out there then .

The A pillars at the front and the wide pillars at the rear create some good blind spots in the first gen as well.. Consequences of a CUV and a beautiful design.

Some good points were made, however I think that his father should make the decision on whether or not he feels his son his responsible. I am 18, and I was blessed to be able to get an fx as my first car. I cherish the car, and take care of it. I'm very responsible with it. I park the car, in the farthest spot possible to avoid anyone opening doors, I hand wash/clean it, I take care of any issues that present themselves...... It's all about the character of the person who will be driving the car. I'm not a lazy person, I work hard in college and lacrosse everyday and value the opportunities I get. But then their are those kids who get nice cars and treat them like crap. So if you think your son is responsible and deserves the car, then make him a happy kid.
