Owweee

Hahaha... sorry for laughing, but as I was reading it I was thinking "why the hell is this person so easily creeped out?"

I didn't even realize until dopie asked that I could've answered it myself  I even went as far as to think that the person staring had a premonition and saw the lil accident coming and wanted to watch it happen :eeerr:

But anyways, John, why would the fender have to be taken off? If you don't see any difference in the space between the door and fender, could you skip that? It doesn't look like the door being hit affected the fender, and the fender doesn't look like it was physically damaged itself.

From the picture all the damage I saw was the door I think the driver's side mirror got damaged too on the fleeing process.. *chuckles*

So if she go to a junk yard and find a FX of the same color she will be golden. I don't think the cost would go over $600 with door/mirror installed.

John wants to remove the fender to paint match the new door perfectly. He would respray practically the entire side to make sure it blends well. Just throwing on a door from another FX will be very obvious and mismatched.

another door same color could be a perfect match, or it could be close enough to be fine, or it could look a little off depending... at least if another door was obtained same color, worse case is, even if the outside needed to be sprayed, the interior jamb would at least be good to go.

I never said anything about taking the fender off??? what I did say is, that to spray the door & get a flawless match the fender would have to be blended, which means fading the new paint into the original, this would require spraying partially into the fender & then clearcoating the whole fender.

to spray the fender & have it perfect, along with removing the fender molding, the headlight should be removed, taping up where the headlight meets the fender will be an area of detectability & could get sloppy, less than ideal... to take the headlight out the bumper needs to be dropped.

to paint parts of the car the right way, any trim that happens to meet the painted area there are 2 choices, tape it up or remove it... taping it up is almost always a comprimise & usually if the trim can be removed it makes for a better cleaner job... there are some things that are worse than others to just tape around. for example, the lower door molding... not so horrible to tape off, it's down low, straight seem & the molding can be a pain to take off cause of the double sided tape. then youve got stuff like door handles, they really should be removed, taping around them will just make a sloppy job & it's something that is right in your face each time you get in the car...

Oh, I mixed up fender trim with fender :tears:

id go with rookie's or you can check with your dealer and see if they can give you a loaner (which is what i did). the work was ok, but the loaner during the two weeks was very helpful.

Fyi

I'm not so easily creeped out but I was in a worse neighborhood than I live in (Downtown, it can be worse than here) ,at night, no one out except the freak, just out there, alone no car, no apparent reason for his being there, just staring. Downtown homeless talk to you, ask for change, cigarettes, recite you a poem or song etc. so you know their intentions. If you talk to them it's cool, they only mess with you if you snub them. This was different, bad vibe, threw me off. Also earlier, my friend had been telling me about having been kidnapped twice by guys so it made me hyper aware (you, guys don't even think about that, like some creepy chick would mess with you) and I just wanted to go, fast, so I screwed up and I am disappointed in my self (really pissed) and that door was perfect! I didn't want to park there by the pillar but didn't want to park far out around there either and it was the only non compact space available so I took it, just bad timing all around. Also, after it happened I thought the same thing about his having a premonition or him actually causing it to happen, which in a way he did cause it. After it happened he took off.

It would be amazing to find a "perfect" Diamond Graphite door but I'm not holding my breath so just redoing the door metal with an excellent paint match would be cool. The fender is fine. The colored plastic is the only part of the mirror that survived unscathed as the glass side hit the concrete pillar.

If I find that door and mirror, I'll install it myself.

There's two kinds of people, tapers and removers, I'm the later. This fanaticism once led to my 280Z being totaled end over end and back but that's another story.

sounds like an interesting story :) I'm the same though, I like to remove eeeeverything... within reason of course... many times I'll stop short of pulling the sealed glass to maintain the factory seal, but if it can be unbolted or removed then it should be...
