Oil change ..dealer vs jiffy lube?

Check your capacity and prepare before you start. The FX35 takes 5 quarts and the FX45 takes 7 quarts. Even the Infiniti dealer screwed this up. I had an oil change done at Infiniti and they only put 5 quarts into my FX45. They sent me out the door and on the road 2 quarts under! Later on, something didn't seem right. I checked the oil and then the work order where it stated the wrong oil change.
There's no secret to my V8. It is stock, has badges, and a 4.5 engine cover. And the mechanic at the Infiniti dealership didn't even check the dipstick afterwards!
I couldn't belive it - screwed up a FX oil change at the dealership! :eek.:

Probably partially my fault. I wasn't at my normal dealership. I should have gone to Metro where I belong. It's all Cheryl for good service now.

MUFC - Don't overfill. You could blow seals. (That sounds kinda funny. You could blow engine seals. It's much different than blowing goats.)

I know I said I would do it myself, but I'm going to bite the bullet and go to jiffy lube tomorrow ( if they're open ).

Here's for hoping the car doesn't break down on my way back home.

PS: do I need to keep the receipt to prove I've done an oil change to not void my warranty?

buy a new filter from autozone and take it there with you and don't be sitting in the waiting room while they are changing your oil. who know what they will do.
and since you're going to :tdown:Jiffy:tdown:Lube:tdown: keep the receipts for records if your something happens to your car and the dealership determines that the damage was caused because if this particular action of yours. then you can go bite :tdown:jiffy:tdown:lube's:tdown: a$$

I'm probably going to buy some oil from autozone too. Do you have any previous good/bad experiences with jiffy ?

I've been doing my own oil changes for over a year now. Not hard at all, but then again we're talking one nut, one filter, and one cap. Should be pretty simple. Feel much better doing it this way, but I'll have to go to the dealer when I'm at school.

School started so I don't want to risk screwing it up on my own... but the irony is .. I'm going to jiffy lube.

There is only one way to oil change. You drain, change filter, and pour 5qts. It's really really easy. There is only one way to do it right. You should've given it a shot.

The DIYs on here/online/other forums are pretty comprehensive. The filter is very easy to locate and once you take off the splashpan you will see it. As for tips...

- FX takes 4.5quarts of oil, so make sure your catchcan/bucket is big enough for the oil to drain into

- Open the oil cap on the engine while the oil is draining so it can drain faster

- Warm oil (run your motor for a few minutes before the change) drains faster than cold oil

- after you finished the oil change. Autozone lets you bring your oil there and dump it for free

4.5qts? The manual says 5qts no? I've been putting 5qts without any problems.

This shouldn't even be a question if you really care about your FX.. Since I learned how to do it I don't trust the dealership nor a freaking jiffy lube.. But hey try it out and let me see how it goes.. I hope you don't come back asking question about your FX breaking down and acting up once you get it done..

Oil change one on one!
1. Warm your engine a bit/turn off your engine
2. Remove engine's oil cap
3. Remove plastic cover on the bottom of your FX
4. Get a container big enough to drain the used 5/7 quart of oil/ put it right under the drain plug.
5. Remove the drain plug and let the oil come out.
6. Once all the oil is out remove the old oil filter.
7. Install new oil filter
8. Put the oil plug back in.
9. Install the plastic back cover under the FX
10.Fill your FX with 5quart of oil/FX35 or 7quart/FX45 put oil cap back on and you are done.

FWIW, the handling and disposal/recycling of the used oil is the single factor that keeps me from doing the oil changes myself, not the difficulty of the operation.

All this talk of Jiffy Lube makes me want to plug Oil Can Henry's again. So much better than JL in every way. You stay in your car the whole time, there are 4 cameras displayed on a monitor right next to the drivers window that allow you to watch every single thing that goes on with your car, they stock Castrol (rather than JL's Pennzoil), always have M1 oil on hand for an upgrade, and have no problem using a customer provied oil filter. They also seem to have a lower employee turnover rate which lends to more experienced (and older) "mechanics".

It's obviously cheaper and better to do the oil changes yourself (assuming you know what you're doing, have a few tools, and a place to do the job) but if you need or want to have someone else do it, go to the dealership. If that's not an option (my dealer is a 30min drive from my house without traffic, which can easily double that time) then Oil Can Henry's, in my experience, is a decent alternative. I wouldn't go to Jiffy Lube if it was free.

Anybody with enough of an interest in cars to be on this site and a member of iS should be able to comfortably and confidently change oil themselves. It's common, it's easy, and a darn good way to get to know your car. There really isn't too much to screw up. You don't need any fancy tools, torque wrench, or filter wrench. You should have common sense though.
The main reason I have my oil changed for me is laziness. To do it myself, the oil and filter is $15-$20. I often come across local specials at chains or indendant mechanics for $10-$15. That makes it difficult for me to justify laying on the ground and getting hot and dirty.
The general rule I follow with all my cars is- Change your own oil every other oil change. This keeps you with your personal touch with the car. It helps you know whats going on underneath. You should get up close and take a look.

I changed my own oil on my previous car, haven't changed oil on the fx yet. Was wondering for the FX, do you even need to jack it up? Is the stock clearance high enough to just go underneath it?

If you are not dropped, you won't need to jack it up. Even when I was dropped with eibachs, I didn't need to lift it.

So it's 5 qt to do a FX35. No filter wrench needed?

Question, so what brand oil filter and oil should be used? Nissan or go to Autozone?

Second, how often are oil changes needed for anFX35 using regular oil vs synthetic oil?

I think some one mentioned in another thread that nissan filter is expensive and isn't really that good. if you look at the previous page mobil filter was recommended and so was mobil oil.

oh and btw, for the very first time, I managed to change the oil :smile (2):. A friend gave me a hand but it was a good experience.
