Oil change ..dealer vs jiffy lube?

I will be changing my oil next week or so, and was wondering should I go to the dealer or just go to the likes of jiffy lube?. It's not that I'm trying to save a few bucks, its just that I don't feel like driving about an hour round trip and waiting another 30-45 minutes for an oil change at the dealer. Where as jiffy lube is just a couple of minutes drive, then again, I've heard some bad stuff about them.

So what's the IS's take on Jiffy lube?

I think they are fine but I would take my own synthetic oil and I would watch them service my car. I have taken my FX to EZ lube with my own M1 and filter and they did the change while I watched.

They use sh*t oil and employ lackeys.
If you have to hit a quick change joint, go to Oil Can Henry's. They use Castrol oils, stock Mobil1 as an upgrade, allows you to sit in your car while they work, and has video cameras on a monitor right outside the drivers side window so you can keep an eye on the grease monkeys under your hood.

EDIT: Doc's right about the filter as well. I think all the quick joints use Fram filters, which aren't even worth the $1 credit you get for bringing your own filter.

EZ Lube over filled my oil on my acura and I never went back to them. I was so pissed. I decided to learn how to do my oil change after reading a DIY on this forum. After that I've been doing it myself. I never get that oil smell after oil changes anymore since I wipe off all the oil run off unlike any place you take your car to.

don't you have half n hour so you can do it yourself?

Doing it yourself is pretty easy, it will save you money and you'll have the stisfaction of doing it right yourself. DIY:tup:

Jiffy Lube...
Staff/Oil Change Person: "We get these cars in here all the time"
After 30 minutes they ask for help in locating the filter on my 00 Prelude Type SH
Basically the same thing on the 79 Mercedes 450SLC and the NB Miata. But then again I am in Houston, home of the trucks, trucks, and more trucks!

I had to go out of town and needed a quick change on the FX. They lost some of the bolts to the splash shield. I replaced all the missing bolts when I did my own oil change. Next time the dealer changed the oil, everything seemed great. Again when I went under there to do my own change missing bolts...

If you can't do it yourself the dealership is the lesser of two evils.

id look for a local mechanic instead of jiffy lube and the other chains. ive seen enough undercover tv reports on these places where they were caught with not replacing needed parts, selling unnecessary services, and other things i cant recall.

The dealer will give me a loaner for the day when I get my oil changed there. I just tell them I have to drop off on my way to work and pick up at the end of the day. Not sure if that is an option for you?

There's a reason why these joints only charge you $19.99 for an oil change and still make profit. Cheap oil and they sometimes don't even change the filter (esp. those that have underground area).

Buy synthetic oil and a good filter and do it yourself. It's easy with a DIY even for a first timer.

I LOLd at "lackeys" - They probably waste a bunch of time on shennanigans and tomfoolery too - not at all who you want working on your car. Hopefully there's no hijinks either.

Would you guys recommend me doing it myself considering I've never done it before. I'm aware of the write up, so I should follow every step and I'm good right?

Basically, what's the worst case scenario if I screwed up?

They do seem to get away with a lot of stuff:mad.:

looking for a good local mechanic will be a hassle too. Lots of trial and errors till I find the right mechanic.

you'll be happy knowing you did it yourself. and you don't even have to jack the car up. try it, there's always a first time for everyone.

one more thing, switch to synthetic if you already haven't. check a couple of threads here, a lot of us agree on Mobil 1 oil.

you're probably right..I might as well just do it myself.

I am using synthetic, but not sure which brand. Should I get mobile 1 5W-30 oil?

And What about the oil filter, should I use Mobil 1 Model M1110 ?

Thanks,

The DIYs on here/online/other forums are pretty comprehensive. The filter is very easy to locate and once you take off the splashpan you will see it. As for tips...

- FX takes 4.5quarts of oil, so make sure your catchcan/bucket is big enough for the oil to drain into

- Open the oil cap on the engine while the oil is draining so it can drain faster

- Warm oil (run your motor for a few minutes before the change) drains faster than cold oil

- after you finished the oil change. Autozone lets you bring your oil there and dump it for free

Thanks for the tips but what happen if i accidentally over fill, like 5.0 quarts. I know its a stupid question but I'm prone to stupid mistakes.

no problem if your car burns oil. check the dip stick occasionally to determine the amount of oil.

I have a friend who used to work for Jiffy Lube. He said they'll do some shady stuff like you bring in M1 filter and they will swap it with the regular one without noticing.
