Move over JLC! I got my own crees!

Yes, the new Cree mod involves opening up the headlights and you may as well swap to the clear lens while your at it. And yes there is a very noticeable difference between the lenses. I love it, although its a lot of work, it's one of the best mods for the FX. You can check out my garage thread for some pics and you can see the comparison. I don't have details up on the Cree mod yet, until I'm sure it works out long term. :smile (2):

I guess one quick way to tell if you have them is to look at the projector lens. If it's yellowish or cloudy then you should have them. The clear lens will stand out. The difference is noticeable even with the headlights mounted on the car. There is also something to do with the shape or size of a metal band right behind the lens too. I'm not sure exactly what it is, maybe someone can chime in. Here's more info on the recall lights:

Also, I don't think the JLC or any other Crees are "bad" bulbs. I think it's the design limitations of our headlights that's causing them to burn out quicker, so I hope I found a fix to this!

Hmmm any good suggestions for the ones that have the drl swap but is. Not as bright? Maybe i ought to get superbrite towers

I've been running Cree LEDs again since the beginning of March and so far so good. I tried a different approach this time. My theory as to why they kept burning out was that they run really hot inside of the light compartment. They overheated in there because it's so tight on space and there's no room for ventilation. So when I swapped the projector lens out, I decided to remove that clear plastic lens to open it up into the entire headlight housing allowing more ventilation and so heat could dissipate better from the Cree. I also decided to try 5W versions instead of the 7W we all used in the past, to help reduce the amount of heat. All this in theory should work out, so I'm hoping this combo really works out long term!

It sounds like you did not do the drl swap..... Right?
Maybe i ought to try the 5 w like you and see what happens
Thanks aero for the info

He did that's why he removed the plastic cover inside the turn signal spot.
Andrew, I had my Crees for a few months now w/o issues. The reason I think why they haven't burned out yet is because te clear covers in my headlight don't sit close (broken little tabs) and have a crack around the radius of it. So theoretically heat is escaping from the crack into the headlight housing.

Nick is correct, I did do the DRL swap. I was thinking of getting those specific JLC Crees from the group buy to try out because they tested them as DRLs long term with no issues. But for now, I'm happy with the random eBay ones I bought. Plus the 5W are harder to find than the 7W too. The look is amazing at night, combined with Morimoto 6K heads and fogs and the clear projector lens swap. Crystal clear white, no tinge of blue, maybe slight tinge of purple mixed in, as the CREEs give off that effect. Very exotic looking, I'm sure people do a double take and wonder what kind of car it is at night.

Which ones did you end up buying? I need to get a set of LEDs for my DTRL swap as well.

I just bought a random set on eBay, but there aren't too many 5W ones. I typed in 5W Cree 7443 and got a few results. Is that clear lens removed from the housing too?

I dont have the clear lense removed but if i put the 5w crees it wouldnt harm the housing or the sockets? Right?
Im asking this bcuz the last time i had put the original bulb in the swapped spot and it melt the shit outta my headlights ..... And i had to buy new set of headlights...

I don't think it would melt the housing. We all were using 7W CREEs in the past and none of us had melting issues. What part or area melted for you?

Yeah, I didn't remove the lens on mine either. I'll have to look up some 5W and give them a try.

No it was my fault that it melted cuz i used the oe bulb and did the double filament trick with it also......
Wasny really thinking clearly at yhe time
That thing mustve been 400 degrees lol
