KIDO COILOVER STRUT BROKEN-Chedman please advise

Just saw this thread. The second I got to the part with the photos/description, I went and checked mine and they are not broken, thank goodness. DESILVAFX35 you must have been pissed/stressed.
 
man, been so tied up haven't had a chance to update this, here are the pictures, it did pull out and sheared the 4 1/2 threads that were engaged clean off

here you can see that there are just 6mm thread engagement depending on weather it's measured where there are just 4 full threads or measuring where there are a partial 5. consider that the size of the thread is 49mm and doing the math I think that the thread engagement should be at least 25mm which is still only ~50% the thread diameter. threads don't reach full strength till they reach at least 75% of the diameter in thread engagement. here we have a full full 4 threads and one partial thread of engagement, not enough. they either need to make this have more than double thread engagement or consider another method of attaching this lower cap like welding

Anyway, props to matrixx for not lashing back at Desilva.
Pretty sure he was only joking to lighten up the situation.
 
Quite awhile from what I understand with a minor racing history and they sell internationally, (I did my research before I purchased) no complaints or past issues I could find. One off issue? Just not threaded completely? Can the threads be made longer ongoing? I don't see why not. Of the other members running these on iS there has been no other failures.
 
Update, turbocad to the rescue. He swaped out the rear kido dampers with temporary oem kyb's. The car drive's/handles so much better than with the kido's before the damper broke, the back end feels so much more stable. Take note i am comparing the ride now compared to before the damper broke. John will wait for new dampers to arrive from kido. Then the welding begins.

in my opinion I would guess that this design is strong enough for the majority of cars that they are used on.

I personally believe the big heavy wheels are a major contributing factor to this failure,

these 24's are huge 32" diameter and pretty damn heavy. what works with 45, 55 pound wheels oscillating and exerting forces against it may not be able to handle 85 95 pound plus wheels exerting those same forces, that's my guess.

obviously that's enough thread engagement to not have any failures with a large number of these out there,

of course theres still always the possibility that these threads were damaged on assembly or maybe even machined a few thousandth's off, even cnc can have errors, a slip in tolerance would make the thread weaker and more prone to a failure like this also.

in the end I would advise that when the intended fitment of these shocks are larger vehicles like SUV's with potentially big and heavy 22" and 24" wheels, there needs to be a bit more strength at this joint than just the 4 1/2 threads of engagement can provide., if thread engagement was increased to even 15mm it would more than double the strength of this joint and I think there's def room for at least 15mm end cap thread engagement if not more.

So lucky to have John interfacing on our behalf.....Regardless of whether this is is an extreme app or a factory assembly issue this is good information for the company to review their build assembly and possibly make running changes. Interfacing with level headed enthusiast groups is beneficial for manufacturers. Much as racing forwards car dev in the world of auto brands iS does its part with aftermarket manufacturers =)
 
Just confirming that I got the shipping address and sent it over to KIDO. I'll update everyone once I hear back again.

Note I asked if they can do raw aluminum, we will see.
 
I'll check what the BC's look like once I get the FX up on jackstands in a couple days. I looked at a picture I have but couldn't tell for sure.
