KIDO COILOVER STRUT BROKEN-Chedman please advise

I drive my FX very aggressively sometimes on cloverleafs and turns and have no issues. Definitely in the "driven hard" category where tires are screeching and front fenders rubbing type of thing.

A good idea would be to check the other side and see if their cross threaded or same condition. I wonder when they make the coils they dont mass produce instead individual and for each car 4 coils and package to ship, instead making 40 struts and shocks.

I'm 100% sure Andy checked his KIDO coilovers after he saw this thread=) I'm assuming his is not broken apart=).

This thread is epic as selling my FX, I had wildly different thoughts of what broke from strut mounts to a rear shock breaking in half to rear circle mount to frame cracking. We're at page 6 now and we're almost at the conclusion once Dr. John does surgery on the FX.

I should have better photo's tommorow.

as far as the facts, yes the adjuster lock ring was tightened each time an adjustment was made, I did not actually check that the bottom cap was locked tight though, it came pre assembled and glued in, visually it looked to be fully seated and looked to be part of the factory assembly. maybe the threads were damaged as it was assembled at the factory? no way of me knowing that tbh...

tig welding it is not so much "tricky", I'll know more about if there are any other complications when I have it removed but this alu is anodized which is a pita for welding but should be doable... I am going to have to remove the anodizing to weld obviously so the finish will of course be ruined but shouldn't be too much of an issue as I can just paint it black again after it's welded if it does go that route

From John's pics, the gap between the tube and the cap has been for awhile now with all the dust around it like the rest of the dampener. I wonder if is was unscrewed at the very beginning. The tube and cap are screw together with some type of "lock tight" glue/adhesive. They're on pretty tight.

I drove this fx hard myself after I finished the installation, I then drove it several weeks later and it was fine at that point too, this could not have been like this long because when this happens believe me you def notice it, it knocks continuously and loud and very noticable when you drive... this can not happen at all without you noticing it right away as soon as it happens...

So the facts so far, correct if wrong:
1) The lock ring on top of the damper was locked tight at install.
2) The bottom piece (end cap) of the damper was locked tight with the 2nd/middle piece at install.
3) Either cross threaded or not enough strength and end cap simply pulled out.

Turbo will try to TIG weld aluminum (tricky?) so it's one piece.

There are at least 10 KIDO coilovers FX riders out there, Andy's which have 24's too and driven hard -- none others have failed. Desilvia -- did you want KIDO to express mail you a rear shock damper to John's shop? I'm not speaking on KIDO's behalf, and I'd have to ask them if they can warranty it based on the photos John posted.

Hi Ed, Best thing would be to wait until John has the Ride in his shop tomorrow. He plans to remove both the rear Dampers to work on the repair process & replace with Temporary OEM dampers until these are fixed. So i think it 's best if you hold on before you try & get KIDO to send out new dampers. Once John has the KIDO's dampers out of the car he can assess the extent of the Damage and relay that back to you.

Thank you for all your Help in this matter.

I just talked to KIDO and they are willing to express ship whatever broken parts to John's shop.

If John is going to end up welding, KIDO wants you to use new parts either way so you have full new thread and thread engagement.

I can see if it can come raw, not anodized but not sure.

Just say the word and the parts are shipped.

Gotta have thread engagement up into the tube. Good for KIDO for fast follow up and potentially even better CO builds ongoing. The Co. owes Ed and John thanks for walking this in =)

I love this forum. Awesome support and even though we deviate dangerously off track sometimes, it's all good in the end.

No doubts in my mine this be taking care of. The thread kept us wondering what went wrong, what broken in half, struts/shock/dampener. Glad is all out in the clear now! :top:

Time to change your avatar Andy, you should take a picture of the FX35 and FX35 next to each other and use that -- you'll be one of the rare ones on the forum with two FX's.

Just want to give Chedman props!I have nothing to do with this incident or even this group but but from reading all the drama on here Chedman really stepped up and got things resolved. Especially for just being the one to arrange the GB and not actually being a vendor or the manufacturerOf course TCad deserves props for his mastery skills and for helping outSucks that this happened in the first place but it is nice to know that IS members step up to help each other outJust my $0.02
