How to Install Fortin Remote Start

Hey Nash, I had one of the Fortins's installed at Titan Motoring about a year ago (based on your excellent recommendation). Can the EVO Start module piece be added to a existing system after the fact? I am a little confused if this is an add-on, or if it's a completely different entire kit altogether.

Thanks,

Biggy
Hi Biggy, I don’t have the Evo start module installed on mine, it looks like it is a separate module made to work with the Evo one. I am not sure if it is supported in the southern US. Looked like their satellite coverage is mainly for northern areas and Canada. Check out their coverage maps @

How was your experience working with titan motoring?

Ah ha! Serves me right for not reading anything on that page and just looking at the pretty pictures. :) I didn't even realize that it was a Canadian site.

The guys at Titan motoring are awesome. I have had more work done there since the remote start was installed on both my FX and my wife's Lexus. They are always top notch. I have to say they are very pricey. But in this case you get what you pay for. I could save some money going to other local shops or Best Buy for some of this work, but I would never get the level of workmanship and never have the feeling that the work was done right. I have been extremely happy with Titan's work. I had them do the lighted sill plates, the remote start, and had them install a powered sub with bass remote knob in both mine and my wife's cars. I am going to have them hook up some paddle shifters that I installed not to long ago, since they know how to get in behind the dash better than me.

Thanks for the recommendation Nash!

Great review Biggy, Thanks!

Will this work for a 2009 or just 2012 and up? Also has anyone successfully increased the range of the oem remote? Having that app would be amazing but looks like the coverage area is canada only. Lame

It's not a satellite signal, but regular cell phone network.
The cellular options from the link above mainly work in US

Im going to call fortin tomorrow. Having the cell app would be ideal, infinite range, still use the oem fob and not have to carry a separate remote.

If you need infinite range, this is the only option. However, usually it requires some monthly payment. And what is the point of infinite range for remote starter?

Where i work i sometimes have up to a mile walk back to my car in freezing cold temps in the winter. Id like to get into a warm vehicle.

RF kit with 3500ft range would do the trick in your case. The app is more convenient but can be trickier and more expansive.

It will work for 2009.
To increase the range to 3500 ft you can add rf kit like this
RFALL642W - 2-Way 4 Button RF Add-on Kit | Crimestopper™
Also there are some compatible cellular options.
Check RF Kits and select "all brands" and "cellular"
That's a cool find, seems pricey and with being that far away it would be nice if it actually had a way to let you know if the car started. Sometimes it takes a couple attempts for the fortin starter to actually register the call and turn the car on. Being 3500 ft away and not knowing is not ideal.

It's a 2-way remote. It does inform you.
I also noticed that sometimes fortin needs two attempts to register.

hello people, i have a few questions hope you can help me!! i have the same problem as Pinstripe, hit the lock key 3 times, the engine runs, i enter the car, and exactly the same when i hit the break to change to drive, i hear 2 or 3 clicks and the nav screen blinks... then everything returns to normal!! this doesnt happen when i dont use the remote start, so i guess it has to do with the fortin module!! is this normal??
also another question while programing!! the guide shows that you need to click 1 time to turn on the accesories, then 2 times for the ignition. but my question is, if i just hit 2 times the push to start button, the engine will not start, just it will move from acces to on.... do i have to push the break on the second click so that the engine starts? or i just need to click it 2 times, without starting the engine!! thanks alot!

Hey NashFX, your step 13 said to connect the A.14 parking light out (+) (brown/white) wire to the red wire going into the fuse box. Can you confirm this?
A.14 is a (-) output and also the Fortin instruction said to use brown wire from the THAR-NIS1 harness. Also pin 8 on the parking light wire in the fuse box has (+) output.

I'm trouble shooting my install as it won't start. I press the OEM FOB three times, it goes through the motion as I see the info screen and dash light turns on, but did not try to crank. No parking light.

That worked for me, but that is for the parking lights to work, that wont affect the cranking of the vehicle. It sounds like you may need to do the configuration process again to get it to learning the encryption of your vehicle.

Do you have collision avoidance?

Example the radar cruise control and also your car can lightly apply brake if a car stops in front of you?

I had same problem and called Fortin. Standard wiring harness doesn't work if you have that. Connection is different at brake pedal. They offered to walk me through how to fix it, but since it wasn't plug and play any more I wasn't interested.

For testing - you need to trick the Fortin into thinking the brake pedal is pressed. (Do this by removing brake switch from pedal so it always thinks brake is down)
Brake pedal switch wiring is different on cars with collision avoidance technology so nist 1 harness connected according to diagram does not work.

The car should start now, however it will immediately turn off when it starts and sees the brake pedal mashed cause it thinks someone is stealing it.

I did all my troubleshooting with the door closed and window down so I can see LED on Fortin. Based on how it flashes it tells you what step of the start sequence it failed in.

I hope this helps. If you don't have collision avoidance, ignore my post ..

Additionally if you decide to call Fortin and make this work, let us know what fixes it.

Ive done (3) of these installs now and they are super simple. I just did it on my 15 QX70 last night. Thank you for the write up for others.

This comment makes me think I did something wrong on my install. I find it odd that I called Fortin and they said they had a special note about not working if you have the auto activated brakes - but here you have installed 3 with no issues :/

Finally got the EVO-ALL remote starter installed into my 2017 QX70S. For the 2017 or newer, you may have to use the RL1 Red instead of RL2 Red connector as the brake switch wire position is different from earlier model year. The symptom was the car won't start and no brake light as it attempts to start. Also, to turn on the parking. You need to turn OFF A14 Parking Light Control setting using the FlashLink Manger application.
