Gas Gauge Level Fix

Hmm, not sure what would cause this. If this is after the cleaning, maybe take the pump out and making sure its seat at the bottom and the level arm/float can move freely?

My car (albeit with the newer cluster), seems to go a healthy amount above the line as well. A lot of cars do this, so I thought it was normal.

I do also pump the handle a bunch after it clicks the first time cause I hate stopping for gas...lol

Yes buddys , it's a bit on top of the mark , but it works , I will let it go all the way down than fill it up again , probably it will fix by it self , cause the floater will move. Let's see what happens! But I'm glad , the componets inside the pump were very dirty,,,

That's what I thought too but didn't work.

I dont mind it going over at all, my issue is whenever it's empty. The light goes on and goes below the bottom marker, and when I fill up it only takes 68-72 liters. Which means close to 20 liters are in there but not registering.

Mine goes over the mark and I never top off. My BMW goes on the mark, but it also has a lot more ticks. My old company car went over the mark and every Japanese car I owned goes over the mark.

Mine looked like this, too (when it worked). After 4 tries, it still keeps failing. But at least it reads low instead of high. Still using the tripmeter.

I need to do this to my FX. I can only put 15 gallons in the tank when it hits 'E'. It also does not go all the way to full when filling up. Plan to do this but been pretty busy lately with other things.

I am aware that it is easy. With a 6 month old and enough home projects to keep me busy until winter, I will rely on the tripmeter for now.

Yeah after 6 tanks of gas my gauge is starting to misread again. Will buying new fuel senders actually stop this from happening in the future? or are they all going to fail no matter what?

I added a picture that show how to measure the resistance of senders to this DIY. Take some reading with a multi-meter to test out your sender unit when you work on your sender.

Hmm, this DIY fix exactly that....

It is not that you can never fill your tank, it's rather your gauge is display incorrect level in tank. Your gas gauge show empty while there still gas in tank; therefore, when you fill it up it can only takes 16 - 17 gallons. You may also notice that the gas gauge will not show full even when you fill the tank. Which part of Chicago are you coming from?

I second that. I just did the excellent DIY (Thanks again!!!), but the result stays out. Filled her up, but still no full show... DTE stays the samen.
Does it needs to be "relearned" or something? Or just drive until empty (really empty) and refill?

Was your leads on the pump dirty when you had your opened up? Did you clean both the driver and passenger side? I saw result immediately when I put it back together. There is no "relearn" that I'm aware of.

Nope, they weren't too dirty, but some dark stuff came off, drivers side in particular. After cleaning both sides back to new rebuild everything... I'll check the fuel pump side again; perhaps the wiring is hampering the floater...
Thanks again!
