Just chiming in here, did you troubleshoot the mass air flow harness connector? It might need to be replaced.
I had an issue with mine and it automatically went into "limp mode" and didn't rev over 3500rpm. I had accidentally pulled a wire on the connector. I crimped it back in place and haven't had a problem since.
I saw you replaced the sensors, but again, check out the connector and see if that helps.

Since the alternative is a new engine, and after reading the things you've checked and replaced so far, I'd move next to the fuel pump and it's associated wiring.
Here's why:
"after 15 minutes of warm air, back in the car ... push the button and engine started like a charm"
If the key fob isn't recognized by the ECU, the fuel pump is automatically turned off. This will let the engine crank but not start (similar to when your starter burned out). Sometimes after waiting 10-15, it will reset, then re-engage the fuel pump allowing it to start. If this is the case, the 15 minutes actually was the hero not the warm air. "the ticking-sound which I think is coming from the timing-chain-guider"

Or does it sound more like this? In which the ticking might just be sticky lifters.
