cold start problems

FX4BR, to be honest i've been putting this off for almost 2 years now. I just couldnt bring myself to drop $350 on a problem that really just made me turn the ignition twice rather than once. But, i finally did and thus far it really is worth it.

And also its so easy you can do it in around 15 minutes

Yeah, I'm just gonna do it. I didn't want to spend $350 on something that could possibly not be the problem, but it does seem to be the problem at this point. And turning the ignition twice does get annoying... especially when you expect it every time.

Add me to the list possilby. We've had the car 2 years and it happened once a few weeks ago and started on the 3rd set of cranks. Yesterday was much worse, but fine since then. Here is what I wrote in a new thread I started but I might just be having the same issue as everyone else here:

'06 FX45 57k miles, no mods

Went out to start the car yesterday. Never any issue at all, just usually vroooom after 1-2s of cranking starter. Yesterday it would not start. Cold engine first start of the day, plenty of fuel, around 70F ambient. Time and time again I would crank it for 5-10 seconds and it cranked over nice and fast but had not even the slightest hiccup of a start.

After about 8-10 episodes of this, waiting 30 seconds between episodes, I decided to disconnect the battery. I reconnected the battery a minute later but unfortunately same problem. Starter very vigorously turning engine but not even a hiccup or a thought of actually starting. No unusual lights on dash. After another 8-10 times of this, and nearly ready to give up, I tried it again. It immediately started as if there was never an issue. Nice healthy regular quick start. No other starting abnormalities.. always starts right up and idles just fine right off the start.

For now I'll just keep an eye on it... if it happens again, is there any 'trick' to getting it to start? I read the whole thread and one guy had luck starting it quickly before the steering wheel went down... another guy said wait at least 30 seconds after turning on ignition. Do any climate control settings have any impact on ability to start?

I had some luck (only couple of times) turning off the A/C before turning off the FX. Then, the other day started fine. Maybe it was a casuallity

well its been a month now and the cold start issue is completely gone. My ride has started up on the first crank every time without hesitation. I can say with confidence that the AC Amp was the issue for my starting issues.

So I haven't been on the forums for a little while now
Since replacing my AC Amp about 2 years ago I haven't had one issue starting my FX
I noticed that some of you replaced your AC amps as well
Hopefully it has solved your starting problems
For the others that have replaced parts and have solved their starting issues, please provide info on what you did to help out fellow FXers

Thanks

For the last month or so, I have been experiencing the cold start problem, and was ready to order the AC Amp.

However, the other night, I was waiting in the car for about 30 minutes with just the radio on, and when I went to start the car, I got nothing but clicks. When I got home, I put a charger on it overnight, and the next morning it started fine with no hesitaton.

I replaced the battery, and have not had a cold start problem since.

That's good to hear that the starting problem went away when changing your battery. When I changed my battery it went away as well, but then it came back a few months later. Hopefully yours stays fixed.

Hi. Tes, but the cold start problem is something recurrent and it only happens when the FX has been left unused fir some time like firs thing on the morning, or a cold weather. The battery can fail anytime. The cold start problem is so recurrent that you become so desperate that you will be happy to spend the cost of the AC amp.

I replaced my AC amp this weekend. As everyone has already said, it's an easy install and it fixed the problem. One odd thing though - I replaced the battery at the same time (it's the original battery and winter is coming- really just a precaution). I noticed this morning that my speedometer is reading high - like 4+mph high). What's really weird is that the intelligent cruise is correct. For example, if the analog gauge says 65 and I set the cruise, the display will say that I set the cruise at 61. I confirmed with a speedometer app on my phone that I really am going 61.

I previously had the speedometer/mileage recall fix performed. Anyone have any thoughts or have similar experiences?

You're sure it hasn't always read high? ie, on most cars the speedometer is off by 3-5% and that's normal. On BMW's, it's set to read high for "safety". The odometer recall shouldn't have anything to do with it because even though they read from the same sensor, the computer can exaggerate the speedometer reading. It would obviously be illegal to do this to the odo.

Absolutely positive - I've had the car for 90k miles - this was new immediately following the A/C Amp + Battery. The speedometer was always a little high vs reality (GPS speedometer). However, it has never been off between the intelligent cruise readout and the gauge - those have always been perfectly in sync.

Pre-recall: speedo read ~5mph high
Post-recall: speedo reads ~2 mph high

This is based upon intelligent cruise vs. what my radar detector says I'm going. My ICC and speedo are always the same though.

I was exactly the same as you pre/post recall, but again, prior to the AC Amplifier/Battery change, my ICC and speedo were the same, now they aren't.

I put the old AC Amplifier back in today. Speedometer immediately went back to normal (and the car started fine, though from reading this thread, it looks like the new battery makes it start fine for a while, but then the problem comes back if you don't change the AC Amplifier). I submitted a return request as it would appear as if the one that I got was somehow faulty.

maybe they need to reprogram it.

I had wondered what exactly gets done with the odo/speedo recall. When I had my ecu reflashed I was wondering it the recall would be affected, but it wasn't. Although it's possible the donor ECU already had the recall done also, I can't remember.
