Aftermarket Engine mounts

OEM motor mounts installed last night. I had almost become accustomed to the solid mounts - the vibration was still noticeable, but over the past couple months I got used to it. Now that the OEM mounts are back in, it's like freakin butta. So soft and smooth. And quiet!!!

Once again, had to remove the exhaust manifolds to break the mount nuts. Tried to do it on the lift without removing the manifold and couldn't get the wrench on the nut. Just not enough access. While the manifolds were off, they were heat-wrapped. Wouldn't have done that if the manifolds weren't already coming off.

The feel of the motor mounts and the sound deadening of the wrap (unexpected) has totally inspired me to follow up on other mods that play on the luxury feel of the FX. Specifically, I now want to try dynamat (or equivalent) inside all the door panels and in the trunk for engine/outside sound isolation. But that's a new thread.

yeah i was going to do the entire dynomat thing but it ends up costing $$ and gets heavy when you start slapping it on

I hear ya. But I figure with a TT, the weight won't matter so much. Also with boost, I bet things are a little bit louder and could use the sound and vibration dampening. My goal has always been to make the FX into more of what I love about it and the luxury feel is definitely part of that.

true, true.

want to throw me a TT setup? haha it's going to be a year or two still before I even think FI with school and everything....

Dude, you are already miles ahead of any other college kid I know. I've been researching my FI since I started modding - it was one of the first threads I ever started on IS. I have flipped back and forth a couple times - Supercharger, Turbo, TT, NA - but as soon as I find a shop I can trust and have confidence in, I think I'll get the engine built and the turbo kit installed. For most people it's a question of money. I just want to do everything else I can possibly do first. That's why I attacked the tranny, suspension, brakes & exhaust the way I have - in prep for FI.

That's the only reason I haven't done the ECU tune - cuz I'll be getting a standalone EMS and will have dropped about 600 on an ECU tune I won't use anymore. HFCs should be useful though. Still have that on my list.

But I divert my own thread. OEM engine mounts - good, yeah. Stick with them!

FWIW, Dynamat won't help a lot with road noise or engine/exhaust noise. If you do it to damp vibrations from a big stereo, it works great. This is coming from personal experience. My wife's car and my car used to be sponsored by Dynamat (this was years ago). So we got a ridiculous amount of Dynamat Extreme; this is the foil covered version that conforms better. We dynamatted our entire cars - doors, floor, trunk, hatch, part of the firewall, everything we could get to. Some areas, we even put on 2 layers. Honestly, it made a very minimal difference in terms of hearing road noise or the engine and exhaust. I noticed a bigger difference once when I had some blankets in the trunk. It made a huge difference in fixing rattles and making the stereos sound better though. Also, the cars felt more solid when closing the doors.

If someone asked me if it was worth dynamatting an entire car, I would say no if they had to pay for it. If you're competing in stereo competions; then it's very worth it. But for the average daily driver, the difference will be minimal. It's also a huge pain to install and messy. You have to take apart your entire interior to do it right.

Good info - thanks. I'd certainly like to eliminate vibrations - both from the stereo and from road noise. But I am looking for that, "insulated" feeling - less ambient noise in general. If dynamat is not the solution, are there alternatives to do what I'm looking for?

That I do not have an answer to. I've always wanted the feel of say riding in an S Class. Those cars feel luxurious and quiet; but not totally isolated. But cars like that are designed from the ground up; the glass, interior panels, tires, motor mounts, etc. are all configured to give you that luxurious feeling. I don't know if there is really a way to replicate something like that with just modifications. At least, I've never ridden in a car that accomplished that. Dynamat helps a little, the right tire can help but most of the quiet ones don't handle that well.

So any update on this.......??

With my F/I projekt ahead i'm coming more and more in the range of these questions and issues myself.
So thought i'd do a surch first and stumbled onto this thread.

I kinda thought it might be usefull having a stronger engine mount as well.
Also the transmission mount i was looking into, but honestly do not know wich mounts will fit from a Z or G on our FX :err:

My experience with Dynamat was very different than Shadow - The insulation absolutely reduced road noise, engine and exhaust noise in my FX. Covering the firewall just at the driver's feet made a big difference due to the new Forced Induction exhaust routed and collected in front of the driver. I have not done the whole interior but plan to continue insulation until it is finished. Each section I do immediately improves the interior feel.

Engine mounts - absolutely stay with OEM. Do not change to aftermarket mounts. There will be no benefit to aftermarket mounts with your planned power levels. The OEM mounts MIGHT wear out a bit faster than usual, but a lot of that depends on your driving. Trust me on this one - don't put solid motor mounts in the FX.

Yeah still planning on doing the dynamat as well......

Ok clear on the engine mounts.........and what about the tranny...?? I already bought whitline diff teflon rubbers.....so tranny is all that is left to discuss then.....

I never did much research on the tranny mount. Mine is still OEM. If you do go with something different - let me know how it feels!

how long did it take to change the driver side engine mount, a shop wanted to charge me around $150 for labor only, thanks, what the price around?

Seriously - jump on that. $150 assumes maybe an hour and a half of work and it took me closer to six hours for both sides. Good price for labor if you ask me.

Dave I just wouldn't do it man. No matter how you slice it, they'll be harder, louder and have more vibration than OEM. If that's worth it for a small perceived bump in response, then maybe you'll be happy?

OEM it is. Did you do just motor? not tranny?
I can deffntly feel it gone when I brake torque. I think the tranny mount would thump thump if it were gone. thoughts?
