Upgraded my subwoofer...

Hi all, just back from the cottage, and a little skiing:biggrin:. First defjamz, my amp crossover is set at 12db, and if you are not looking to kill the bass one ten is definitely enough. second jdtrader, I don't think removing the factory sub has anything to do with the centre speaker(if you look at the wiring for the sub, it does not run back to the centre speaker), I don't know why the stereo shop would tell you that. Now as for upgrading the factory speakers, because you add a real subwoofer, you no longer need as much bass from the rest of the system, this allows you to use the factory system more for mids and highs, therefore actually reducing the chance of blowing your factory speaker's, don't get me wrong if you upgrade the rest of the speaker's it would definitely sound better, but it is all in what you want to do(mine sounds really good to me, so I wouldn't add any more). Jd that amp look's huge and will only fit in the spare tire well if you remove the spare tire(my amp just fit's inside the spare tire), as for the light's dimming or extra strain on the electrical system, I have not encountered any issues yet. I will be putting together a DIY with pic's, I am just waiting for the cold to let up a bit(-17 c today), in the meanwhile I will do my best to help. George your set up look's awesome, I think I will attempt to build my own custom fibreglass enclosure when it warm's up, I am finding space to be a little tight, and really like Georges set up.

That's great. I look forward to the DIY. I won't pull the trigger on anything until I know more about what I'm getting into as I'm not in a hurry.

I took it to a local audio shop and got my 500/1 and 10w7 install for $80 plus wiring but I'd notice today that the harness to my factory sub has been disconnected. Is it really necessary to do that? I mean, can i keep it connected as a source of midbass,

^That might work if you could eq the oem sub to compliment your W7, but you can't. I'd guess that the frequency range that your stock sub is capable of is more than covered by the new unit, and using both would sound worse, not better.

I connected the factory sub back on today. Turned the bass level to -4, the trebs to +4 on the factory headunit and I had that found that missing midbass that I was lookin for. IMO the whole system sounded fuller and louder too, btw the 10w7 still hittin hard as always and that poundin bass can be control wit my bassknob mounted on one of the unused button on the dash.

So I finally got around to installing a 12" Jl audio subwoofer, and a Jl audio amp, "WOW" what a huge difference. I installed it on Saturday, it took about 2-3 hours. As soon as I can post pics I will put some up. If anybody need's help with this or has any question's about the install just ask.
I want to replace my crossover with a new one I want to keep the original amp just my bose crossover is bad every time I hit a bump it goes out and sometimes never comes back in... I have taken it apart and if I tap on it it plays then goes out...I know the red & green are speaker wires... but what are the orange, black, yellow, purple (fushia) ,light blue, & navy... I thanks in advanced

Hey everyone, I'm a noob here so help me out if I'm posting something wrong. I have a nice setup with a 10" sub and Kenwood amp in my '05 FX35. I took the stock Bose sub out and put in a custom enclosure there, then mounted the amp at an angle in one of the cavaties to the upper right of where the spare sits. The enclosure was fairly simple to construct and because it fits in the spare tire, does not take up any trunk space. I can't post pics yet, but can email them to a more senior member if anyone wants to see them.

yeah, made it myself in the garage. I'm pretty handy with wood working, but I can tell you how to do it and with the pictures, it's actually pretty simple. I've even revised it once and about to again. The final product will actually sit flush to the bottom side of the rear floor and have a metal grill flush with the top side. No loss of trunk space and a clean install.

Pictures or it it's taking up the whole trunk space.

Yeah, I did it myself. I'm pretty handy, but since I've done all the R&D it should be pretty simple to re-create. I used a pressed fiberboard shipping drum wrapped around a wood frame. No fiberglass, no mess. I'm going to mount it to the bottom of the rear floor with a metal grill that sits flush with the top of the floor. No loss of trunk and a great amount of bass!

I had mine custom made from fiberglass for a perfect fit. I have a hard time believing the same can be done only completely from wood. Post pictures so we can see what you are talking about.

Jonas, your sub enclosure is actually quite poor. You should really think about selling it and redesigning the set up again. I'd be happy to take it off your hands :p

I just joined the forum and don't have enough posts under my belt to post pics yet. I can email some to you for you to post, or I'll need to wait to get a few more posts in.

That thing is huge. I would not want to always be giving up that much real estate in the back. None-the-less, it does look good.

Not to sound like negative Nate, but I have to agree with Georgie. That 12" must sound next to superb, my 10 pumps with shizzle out of my ride,,but that box dominates your cargo area.
