Upgraded my subwoofer...

10 is good, a 12 is better, 2- 12s will take up a lot of space but sounds/feels fantastic!
What specific questions do you have?

No, my box sits down flush with the floor, it actually resides in the cavity where the stock Bose sub used to be. Also, the amp is flush mounted in the floor, that sits in a cavity to the upper right of the spare tire. I'm getting my posts in, so soon as I get to 10 posts I can drop some pics. Here is the concept: I cut 2 round circles out of 3/4" MDF, about 1/2" less than the diameter of the inside of the spare tire. Those serve as the base and the baffle. Then I used 2x2 to make 8 vertical "stringers" to attach the top and bottom plates. Around this skeleton I glued/screwed 2 layers of pressed fiberboard (think super thick/condensed cardboard) to make the outside skin of the enclosure. Stuffed with poly-fill, a 10" sub works very nicely. When I get to post the pics, you'll see the outside, and I may even take the sub out and show you the inside framework. It took some tinkering and thinking, but was fairly simple to execute.

sounds impressive!

I want to see pics, I'm sure it's pretty straight forward, the description kinda gives me a visual of a prehistoric wheel. How many cubic inches does that enclosure give you, mounting depth, ect...?

Prehistoric wheel is a pretty apropos description. I think it's a little over .5 cubic feet, with the poly-fil you're about at an effective .65 or so. The mounting depth is around 5". You definitely need a sub suited for a smaller, sealed enclosure. But I've seen 12" and even the rare 15" that could work in this enclosure. The free-air F3 is probably a little high, but factor in cabin gain and potential bass boost on your amp and it gets down pretty low. I'm actually using a Peerless 10" that I took out of an old home theater subwoofer that I've been needing to put to good use.

Here's my 10" MTX 9500 in a ported box. The thing takes up half of my useable trunk space lol.

Hey I have the same EXACT sub! Don't you love it! Pounds so strong and very responsive! I really like MTX subs.

Yeah JD the sub is a definate BEAST and can hang with the W7. Mine is underpowered, as I'm using an old Sony Xplod that I had lying around. I really do need to upgrade very soon to hear its' full potential.

You have a knarly setup! Probably the best subwoofer integration I've seen in an FX to date. If only I were handy with fiberglassing and whatnot... but I would more than likely mess it up really badly ha. It took me an hour just to wire the damn thing I couldnt imagine cutting and hacking away. I think that you should start making them and selling those boxes to the InfintiScene family. I would be your first customer for sure!

Did you do a DIY on that btw?

Thanks. Nope a shop did it for me. I had certain strict requirements and it all worked out. I had strict requirements on the amp and capacitor to also be removable and not take any space. I can remove the sub and amp/cap in less than a minute, but you pay for that kind of setup. Our 400 RMS 10'' MTX sub needs a certain amount of volume for air and luckily with the rear seats reclined they were able to get that minimum requirements, otherwise I would have lost the ability to be able to pull down the rear driver seats from the trunk space. Check out my thread for pics of the amp...I have a alpine 600rms amp and it's awesome....lots of power. It's LOUD bass and it's at like 30% I think because the rest of the stereo can't keep up then.

By the way, the picture above is actually old. In the above picture you can see a crease on top of the box where they glued that carpet on the box. This is how Ian and Andy and them saw it too. I later asked them to redo that part so now it actually looks 100% better. You can't even tell it's more than one piece of that carpet glued on the box.

Thanks to jd planting that awful mod bug in my head, I will be making a similar enclosure myself as a weekend project. I already have the rough blueprints of what to do in my head, just have to go get measurements and I should be good to go. I won't have time this week, but hopefully I can get to it within the month. Would there be an interest in a DIY even though this might be a little more complicated than your typical DIY?

Also, if someone could tell me how to remove the left side panel in the trunk so that I don't have to spend time figuring that out, that would be extremely helpful!

JD, from both of our pics above, using out chrome strips as a point of reference, my trunk floor opens to the left of my chrome strip but I see that your floor opens about 2 or 3 notches(the raised grooves in the chrome strip) into your chrome strip. Is that correct?

And JD, thanks again for the idea. If you have more pics, don't hold back ! Haha

Yep, I get to hear Jonas' sub. Very impressive. Love the integration leaving full function trunk space. Here is the 1st gen using Wicked CAS box.

no problem. Chrome strips? Post a picture of what you are identifying as a chrome strip.

So sorry for the confusion!!!

So the picture below shows the crease from which my trunk floor opens (i highlighted it in black because its hard to see) where the blue box is. The chrome strip is circled in red, which i am using as a reference point.

In yours, your crease seems to be more to the right, a couple inches into the chrome strip. Is that crease that is highlighted below in blue how far your trunk floor extends? I guess I might be confusing myself a little bit. To access your spare, you do not take out your enclosure right?

Ah, the pictures helped...

We have the same trunk. Our creases don't match (in the picture) because I have the cargo mat that protects the bottom that you don't have in your picture. So you are comparing my cargo mat crease to your trunk floor crease (which I have too) below the cargo mat.

When I told you over PM about how the shop wanted to cut it off if they would have bolted it on...well they would have modified the crease parts (cut it and make it look pretty) so that if the sub box was permanently bolted, I could open up the bottom. Or as I mentioned they could have bolted it 2 inches from the bottom so that I could lift up the trunk lid and pull it out. I didn't want those options. The only disadvantage I get for not bolting it to the frame of the car is that you don't get that frame vibration...basically that's when you really really feel it since the whole car will vibrate. I didn't want that anyway and I get enough vibration where all my mirrors vibrate when I have it turned up anyway, so I can't imagine it have being bolted. The current setup is easily removable and no modifications to the car itself....that was actually an additional requirement I had: had to be 100% reversible so that if I sold it the buyer wouldn't even know I did anything and they accomplished that. It's basically the same setup you have looks like just completely custom molded to fit perfectly into that space without losing any functionality or space from my cargo storage.

Ok that makes alot of sense. The frame rattle would be completely annoying, i totally agree. Bolting directly to the car would be way too intense, I get headaches as it is when I turn up the bass to my MTX.

So you do have to take out the enclosure to access the spare correct?

yes but it's fast. I can pull it out where there is enough slack to place it on the ground and then quick disconnect unplug and you're done.

I like that. Are those slits port holes or just for style? and are you using standard connection terminals for your sub box? Do you have any pics of your trunk with the sub removed?

So sorry for all the questions!
