Jumbo's custom turbo build

Made it to the shop this afternoon and all the coated parts had arrived around lunch time. Not a whole lot of progression on the overall build, but that should change in the next few days now that the entire motor is in one place.

Here's a shot of all the coated parts, except for the timing cover, which is on the block in the next photo. The front of the timing cover is coated the same as the silver covers below.

You might notice that the coolant hardpipes are coated black and have been modified with a couple of AN fittings, as well as removal of a bracket.

The entire coolant system will be black with silver fittings, inlcuding the Pathfinder cooling manifold, powdercoated black here:

The motor should be fully assembled and ready to mate up to the transmission sometime tomorrow. I'll be going back Thursday for more photos.

Really like that you are taking the time to dial in the visual details even though its a time vampire....do it once do it right baby. Going to look great!

def pays to not rush a build like this... sometimes the smallest detail can take a lot of extra unforseen time, but it's all these little extras that set a great build apart from the average... love the attention to detail with the AN line fittings attached to the water piping, I love AN line & I hate rubber hoses... coming along very nicely...

Well it has been a week since my last post, but a lot of progress!

Here's the motor with the new valve covers installed:

And the coil packs are now bolted up:

Shop tech didn't know I already had a manifold. He installed my old OEM, heat wrapped header for a bit and then put in the correct manifold. Here's the built motor mated up to the built 5AT.

Another angle of the motor/tranny. See the Stillen exhaust on the floor behind the table? We're modding it...

From here, the whole subframe gets bolted back into the FX

Before completely reassembling the suspension, we might as well drop in the BC racing coilovers, since I brought them in the same day I received them from Taiwan.

And a shot of the car on it's new legs for the first time...

And the engine bay... for now...

Turbo hot side/cold side fabrication begins this week! Those should be sweet pix...

I think we can finally say we're getting close! Plan is to currently take delivery for the break-in drive on Friday. Not a hard date though. Can't rush artistry!

Fuel system is complete. Tried to take some photos of each part of the system.

The new lines coming from the Walboro 255 in the tank:

The flex line and hard line run to the front of the car:

And then the lines run up to the FPR - right next to the exhaust manifold:

Here's the FPR:

And finally here's a shot of the feed lines connecting up to the CJM fuel rails:

Going back under the car, here's the passenger side cross pipe running from one exhaust manifold to the manifold on the other side:

And here's the other side:

The next fabrication piece will be the up-pipe to the turbo.

My engine bay as it stands. No intake or turbo components visible yet.

looks great and shiny ! looks like a good clean job so far, good materials .......

but get a real NISMO Oil cap, that one isnt (coming from a wannabe fanboy :tonguey:)

Was thinking about changing out that cap along with the NISMO badge on the window - I don't have a single NISMO part in my entire set-up! But I can still be a fan too, right?!?

That does look awesome! You must be sooooo eager. That 1st drive will be difficult to TRY and stay off the throttle. Nonetheless . . . fight every urge to punch it.

Sneaky Saturday Shop visit

Heard that the shop was planning on working all day today on my car, so I figured I'd go over at the end of the day to see how far they have come. I was not disappointed. By the calendar - Saturday will mark exactly two months that my car has been in the shop.

Hot side will be completed in the next day of work or so. Can't wait to get all those pipes coated ceramic black so the turbo and the wastegate hardware pops in the bay. I think it's gonna be good!

D-Day has arrived. I took delivery of my boosted FX this past Friday night (and got spotted by JCassanova less than a block from the shop, lol).

We are on a break-in tune, and the boost is limited to 3psi. Also limited the engine to 4000rpm. I have already driven her 250 miles and have learned where the limits are before the computer pulls timing and fuel and the BOV triggers, keeping me safely in the break-in zone.

After break in, all the pipes are going out for ceramic coatings. The bay will look a little different. But here she is:

It feels completely different but I can tell the engine is effortless through the limited acceleration I have right now. I can hear the whine of the turbo starting at 1800rpm and hit the 3psi limitation by 3200rpm. I can get up to 100mph by keeping my rpms at 3000 and riding the 2-3psi boost. It just takes a while. Can't wait for the power tune. Should be night and day.
