What did you do to your FX / QX70 today?

Thanks guys. Always felt it was a waste of a light housing just to be a reverse light.
Tried taking night pics, but iPhone sucks for that. Will need to get my camera to fully capture the night effect.

Cool, is it dual function? Comes on with taillights and brighter when brakes are tapped?

Right now I just left it as a driving light. Just like the bumper reflectors. And kept the brake lights as they are. But if I do the Euro mod to the outer tails, then I might tap them to brake line as well.

Cleaned the K&N cone air filter, MAF sensor, TB, upper and lower plenum and the engine bay. Took me about the 4 hours to do it. That's probably some $300+ in stealership labor saved. Next week, I'd try replacing the drive belts for the first time. :smile (2):

is this a common "problem" with FXs? I am using word "problem" loosely

Yes.

As you point out yourself though, it is not a problem so much as it is simply something that happens over time. Every car suffers from this to some degree, the TB will require cleaning. It is a simple process that any dealer will perform when they change your intake filter, or during the course of routine maintenance, they spray a little TB cleaner in there and it will clear out any deposits.

Again Cruisers TB does look dirtier than most normally would, this could be cause by a number of things. If cruiser could answer a couple of questions we can determine if this is a problem worth pursuing further or if it is something to just keep an eye on for now.

Cruiser:

1. When was your TB cleaned last to your knowledge?
2. What grade fuel do you use in your car?
3. When was your Air filter last replaced?
4. When did you last change your spark plugs?

From the looks above, it seems as though it had simply been a long time since the TB was cleaned, but it could be that he uses lower grade fuels and the combustion of this fuel is leaving more deposits.

If neither of these are true a bad plug could be causing an excess of build up. (this is less likely because his plenum looked pretty clean and for this to be the case I would expect the plenum to be very dirty as well).

Overall even the substantial deposits seen above are not a problem, cleaning the TB will return the engine to operating perfectly, and it has not done damage to any other components to other parts. Having a dirty TB is nothing like having dirty oil in your car, it will not cause damage to other pieces. The FX willl however idle a little more rough, and start-up may leave a little to be desired.

1. When was your TB cleaned last to your knowledge?

= Probably 20k + I'm now 64k

2. What grade fuel do you use in your car?

= I use premium, She'll

3. When was your Air filter last replaced

= I changed to Stillen CAI with K&N cone filters at 25k mikes. I had the dealer clean my filter about 40k ago but they did a crappy job and did not oil the filters.

4. When did you last change your spark plugs?

= never yet.

I used the FX as my daily till I got a second vehicle recently. While in NY, heavy stop and go type driving. Here in TX, I drive 75mi per day for more than a year now.

Yeah so you have done nothing wrong, definitely get your filter properly cleaned, but I doubt that caused much of a difference.

Keep an eye on it for a little bit, if you see start to build up it may very well be time to pull your plugs.

If it were me I would just pull my plugs anyway, and change them. Its a cheap and easy job and gives you a chance to inspect for a leaking valve seal, as well as it might be a fouled plug thats creating that much excess deposit.

Again this is not necessary, but they are steps that I would take. It may also just be normal for your car and geography. But I can tell you that I have dealt with my fair share of VQ's and that is definitely the dirtiest TB I have seen.

Maybe a few of the other mechanically inclined on the here can chime in as well?
