Aiya's FX

I dropped in on an OTSZ meet tonight thanks to Kenny. I got to be jealous of those nice G's and Z's.

Sorry for the grainy photos. I was too cold and lazy to take the tripod out so I just bumped up the ISO and did it all by hand.

Went to Lime Rock yesterday and thanks to Kieran and his group (PDA/NASA) I had an absolute blast!!! This being my very first time on the track I was filled with anxiety and was very nervous, but they made me feel relaxed and confident in my abilities without compromising my safety.

The Novice group I was in was strictly about learning the track and the abilities of my car. NO RACING was highly emphasized and very much enforced. This went a long way in making sure I didn't have to worry about the guy behind me, and I could just concentrate on the upcoming turns.

Saying that the FX handled it all beautifully would be an understatement. It took everything thrown at it and asked for more! Keep in mind I was still in a two and a half ton vehicle with a huge drag coefficient, but all things considering, the FX was doing more than everyone there was expecting.

Kieran correctly stated that Lime Rock was an ideal track to utilize the best attributes of the FX45. The short and fast track took advantage of the torque I had, and the short straightaway kept the pack from pulling away more than they could have. I kissed 107-ish in 4th gear by the end of the straight, and I was able to take some of the faster turns in the high 80's. The rest of the time I just put the transmission in 3rd gear and left it there. By the end of the day I was beginning to get the hang of following the lines and using momentum to maintain speeds. I am still as novice as can be but feel that I was able to improve my skills incrementally. I guess when you're at the bottom, there's nowhere to go but up!

My group was filled with cars ranging from Subie STIs, a 911 turbo, 350Z, a NSX, a 300ZX, BMW 3 series, Ford Focus, a few 'vettes, and others which slip my mind. Granted our group was all beginners but I still felt good that I was able to stay with the groups and not be left behind too much. As the day went on, though, and the drivers got better, then I was losing ground more and more.

All in all, I was impressed by the performance of the FX as were the instructors. MANY of them came by to give Kieran and I some good natured ribbing about having the only SUV on the track but it was done out of respect for how well it did.

I cannot thoroughly express how grateful I am for Kieran and all he did for me in making sure this was the best possible experience for me. I would have had a great time regardless but he made it twice as great as that. Thank you!

nice. wow that new lense is wild how it pinpoints focus so precisely & blurrs everything else, really makes the subject pop... who took the pictures of the fx on the track?

Are your brakes upgraded at all? Did you encounter much fade?
It's all OEM. There was no fade at all for my session, and then after a back to back outing, my brother in law reported no fade either when he was done with the FX. My rotors are chewed up though. Hopefully they can be salvaged with some resurfacing.

Thanks, turbo! I love the abilities of this lens. At f/1.4, if your nose is in focus, your eyes will be blurry. A paper thin depth of view indeed. My brother in law took the shots of my session. Those of pictures of him with his stupid smile after being taken out for a ride with an advanced driver/instructor in his track car.

that is what I tried first, then with a space, then I copy & pasted what you typed... nw I tried again all lower case & it says to many failed login attempts, try back later?

haha...sheesh. when I logged out and tried it copied and pasted as LimeRock it wouldn't take. So I logged in and changed it to limerock. Then I logged out and tried it that way and it worked.

looks like fun. Any video?
No video. I don't have a set up for in car vids. Plus they discourage the novice groups from using them as it tends to encourage reckless driving and showing off when the camera is on.

On-track videos are always boring unless you're trying to demonstrate to someone the line. And, yes, videos have been frowned upon ever since this happened:

YouTube- Big HPDE Crash at Pocono East Course Driving School on 5/5/06

With Rich it'd be a different story but I won't get in the car with a newbie who's videotaping. There's nothing to learn until you get to a more advanced level by reviewing video of yourself driving.

As for Limerock, I had a blast instructing Rich and, with the exception of the two times he overcooked Big Bend, it was a total pleasure. Even those two times weren't a big deal... just a slight "oh sh*t" moment.

Proving, once again, that the FX is much more capable than everyone thinks on the track!
