Engine Air Filter Comparison Test

is the drop-in filter new? if it is it should already be pre-oiled but if not then you have to oil the filter or it wont work. The only probalem with Oiled filters is that they CAN burn out the MAF sensor, so there is a change, but everyone is running an oiled filter including myself so you shouldnt be too worried. As long as you apply the recommended oil you should be fine

Well I have 2 that I switch out - so when one is dirty, I take that one out and put in the clean one. And its about that time for a switch, so I was wondering if its bad for me to oil it up (with the K&N cleaning kit).

It should be fine, just dont over oil it. make sure to let it dry completely before putting it back in so theres no chance any left over oil can pass through your intake tubing.

Hold the spray about 8" away and give it a really quick (2 seconds) dusting. You only need a tiny covering on there.

i was told that Nissan filters shouldnt be oiled and the oil can burn out the MAF...:err:

No, I'm not saying the filter SHOULD be oiled. It has a small amount of oil on it from the factory. You don't add oil.

And if you want we can argue this all day, but the people that come in here all the time because of using a paper air filter that is after market has burned out their mass air sensor will disagree with you, along with the master techs that work here.

its not really arguing, its more about sorting out the facts:wink:

if you had read my other post you would have seen this...

LOL im stupid...i meant that you shouldnt use oiled filters with our MAF:wub:

I did, I am not talking about a K&N. I am talking about factory filters. Nissan factory filters have a small amount of oil in them for the MAF. If you use an aftermarket filter that doesn't have this oil I.E. Napa, Autozone, etc, over time it will burn out your MAF.

hmm and i was told the opposite...that Nissan filters are paper and dont have oil and that if you use oiled filters it can burn out the MAF sensor.

Someone want to clear this up?

I sell parts at an Infiniti dealership. I am looking at the filter right now. Yes it is paper, and yes it has a small amount of oil on it. They always have. My buddy that works next to me has been selling Infiniti parts for 10 years and he says the same thing. I can't be anymore clear. If you have an oiled filter like a K&N and have TOO much oil on it then it will burn out the MAF.

if you over oil (which I have done on my K&N for my QX4), your engine will "hiccup" and you will have rough idle.

Solution is easy - get electronic cleaner from any auto store and spray your MAF sensor - be gentle it's sensitive.

No more problems and saved yourself from buying a expensive MAF sensor.

just to add to the maf cleaning, there is a specific "maf spray" by crc, the same company who made the tb spray cleaner too. i cleaned my g20's maf one time and felt a little improvement. others suggest cleaning a "bad" maf before considering replacement.
