So far, I've used Oracal 970ra (both gloss & matte black), 3M 180c Controltac (gloss black), and 3M Di-Noc Carbon Fiber Vinyl (black & dark pewter). I used these films on various interior & exterior parts on my fx35, four 350z, a gtr, and a gt500. I also still have these films on hand.
Gloss & Matte Black: Based on what's currently available from 3M and Oracal that's intended for vehicle wrapping, the Oracal 970 vinyl is better IMO. It is thicker (4 mil as opposed to 2 mil), seems more durable, and is less prone to scratches. In terms of conformability and ease of application, they are about the same. In terms of price, 3M is cheaper. So, for wrapping something that isn't very significant, I would say 3M is fine. I actually wrapped my lower grille chrome piece using 3M, and it came out fine. I barely ever look at it in close distance. For something major (roof, hood, entire car) that is more visible and would get into contact more, I would use the Oracal film.
Carbon Fiber Vinyl: 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber film is very nice. It is 4 mil thick, and is the most scratch resistent film I've seen. It actually has the carbon fiber texture, which is amazing. Oracal recently introduced their carbon fiber film, which is 6 mil thick, but I never used or have seen it so I can compare it to 3M Di-Noc. I hear it has the "gloss" look, as opposed to 3M's dry carbon fiber look. It is also more expensive than the 3M.
I did alot of online research, called many vehicle wrap places, and actually visited 3 vinyl distributors to find all the information I can about 3M and Oracal before spending $600 on my first vinyl roll.
