Wrapped front grille with vinyl

im using Scotch mountaing tape. was going to use double sided 3 poster tape but then scared its not strong enough, although it will be the easiest to take off

currently doing the emblem.. pita! but this is a great and fun project! thanks again roy!

I should look into the Scotch one. I have the 3m mounting tape but it seems so thick to put on the emblem. GL and post some pics when you're done!

wrap looks really clean... how come you didnt go with the 3M... BTW - i see a partial wrap on your roof... how bout somes pics of the entire roof? hows the wrap holding out with mother nature?

I was trying to decide between painting and wrapping my front grille, and just decided to go with the wrap. I figured it will match my roof better and I can always take it off if I wanted to. I did matte black on the grille and gloss black on the emblem. Now I just need to do the lower grille and the door handles/trim chrome pieces.
Here are some pics.

have you used 3M before and had a bad experience? just curious why you think oracal is better?

Yeah, what I did was trim the bottom of each horizontal bar and folded it inside to the top of the next bar, so those bumps were covered (I don't know how else to explain this). It didn't reach all the way inside, but I would say about 80%, but this seemed fine because even the existing chrome spray didn't reach all the way back. Basically, it reached to where the chrome paint reached.

I used oracal 970ra, the same film I used for my roof. Way better than 3M cast matte black IMO. I still have alot of film if you want some.

So far, I've used Oracal 970ra (both gloss & matte black), 3M 180c Controltac (gloss black), and 3M Di-Noc Carbon Fiber Vinyl (black & dark pewter). I used these films on various interior & exterior parts on my fx35, four 350z, a gtr, and a gt500. I also still have these films on hand.

Gloss & Matte Black: Based on what's currently available from 3M and Oracal that's intended for vehicle wrapping, the Oracal 970 vinyl is better IMO. It is thicker (4 mil as opposed to 2 mil), seems more durable, and is less prone to scratches. In terms of conformability and ease of application, they are about the same. In terms of price, 3M is cheaper. So, for wrapping something that isn't very significant, I would say 3M is fine. I actually wrapped my lower grille chrome piece using 3M, and it came out fine. I barely ever look at it in close distance. For something major (roof, hood, entire car) that is more visible and would get into contact more, I would use the Oracal film.

Carbon Fiber Vinyl: 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber film is very nice. It is 4 mil thick, and is the most scratch resistent film I've seen. It actually has the carbon fiber texture, which is amazing. Oracal recently introduced their carbon fiber film, which is 6 mil thick, but I never used or have seen it so I can compare it to 3M Di-Noc. I hear it has the "gloss" look, as opposed to 3M's dry carbon fiber look. It is also more expensive than the 3M.

I did alot of online research, called many vehicle wrap places, and actually visited 3 vinyl distributors to find all the information I can about 3M and Oracal before spending $600 on my first vinyl roll.

has anyone wrapped the front grill with carbon fiber vinyl wrap? curious to see what it looks like before i give it a try

many have on here. search bar is your friend
I cant say for certain peeps have used 3m though. Someone chime in
I've seen the 3m material at SEMA. looks like a pleasure to work with

So i was thinking of buying some matte black vinyl wrap from http://www.stickercity.com/
which is out of california. they charge $19.95 for a roll of 60" by 1 foot. The only thing that i found crazy was that they charge $20.84 to ship it. so basically shipping cost more then the wrap. Does anyone know where i can find some vinyl wrap that i would not pay more in shipping then the item itslef?

hey where did you buy the film, im trying to do the same thing on my white fx but they are charging me 300$ for the roof. how long did it take you to do it

btw good job it looks great

Nice looking grille! Im thinking about vinyl-ing my grille now after i plasti diped it because the texture bothers me slightly. I own a second gen and the grille is wavy and has little plastic pieces that are connected to each layer. You think it be easier to cut strips and vinly each one by one? Not sure how to approach this.
