What went wrong with your FX today?

My fx engine has been making knocking noise since yesterday when engine is cold.

Its a continuous knock for about 2 minutes until it gets warmer . The noise is pretty loud that i can hear it well from in cabin as much as im outside. It continuously knocks about 2-3times every second like dadadadadadadadada until the engine warms up abit....

I am in nyc weather around 30 degrees.

I checked the oil level and its fine. Been using mobil 1 and oil change recently about 3 weeks ago.
We had colder days and it was fine but all of a sudden it started.

Fx is a daily driver ... Help pls

Its 05 with 70k miles
 
I decided to take a look under the hood today to make sure all is ok and I see a bunch of anti-freeze in my skid plate. luckily it turned out that my lower radiator hose was loose and I just needed to tighten it wich I did.

Thnx but mine only occurs during cold start and its not a slight knock

It more like a furious knocking sound lol

Ah ok, I focused on the mention of the cold start, wasn't sure how intense the sound. That doesn't sound good! The first post also mentioned cold starting. I know it is an obvious question, but did you change anything prior to the problem occurring?
 
Nope i did not i had the oil catch can install about a yr ago same with pop charger and everything else has been just reg maintenance.

Hmm just worried you know oir dipstick?
Where should our oil level fall?
Mine falls just alittle shy of the half way mark between the L and H .
The level is fine right?

Yeah, that is right about where OEM specifications put it. I assume it is a good colour/consistency/etc? There is no reason that a catchcan or a pop charger should/could cause what you are describing. The worry I would have is that if it is as loud as you describe, it could be a major issue. You have any Mobil1 floating around? Might be worth trying to add some. Sounds like most of the knocking issues people have experienced have been oil/valve related. Might also be worth popping a video/sound clip up, it's possible someone here will recognize the sound and have a straight answer.

Besides the early start knocking part
Everything else seems normal and fine
I should go check it out soon though
 
That sucks man. It seems like the 4.5 motors aren't as reliable as the 3.5 motors. Too many oil consumption and knocking threads I keep seeing over the years. Even on the Q45 and M45.
 
did you do your own oil change? what consistency of oil you use? was it a brand new bottle?

I used mobile 1 1030 and brand new
In intervals of 5-6000 miles.
Did it in a local friends mechanic shop.
He does not use mobil1 filters but i domt that that matters cuz i am changine every 5-6 k miles .

I mean i bougjt em used so i dont really know how well it was cared for but i had it for about 2 yrs with close to 30 k miles with pretty good maintenance

Ill try again tomoro morning and if its still the same iay try adding oil treatment or something to see if anything else changes damn ...... Should i try filling up the oil all the way to H marker on dip stick? Maybe a quart more?

I doubt filling it that high will have much effect. The manual says to keep it between the L and H, so filling it up when it is already there shouldn't do much. While I have a VQ, not the VK, I normally run close to the middle and never have problems, so I doubt that is the issue. When was the last time you drained your catchcan?

You said you were running 10W30? I wonder if that is the problem. As it is more viscous than 5W30, it would take more engine heat to get it flowing smoothly, especially after sitting cold. Perhaps try switching to 5W30 on the next change. Just a thought.

Well thats why the 3.5 motor wins awards, however the 4.5 is still good but not as eliable as the 3.5
 
My TPMS light came on and sensor 1 had a * instead of a reading driving home in a snowstorm. I cycled the ignition and it went back to normal, strange
 
My driver side was side swiped :bulgy-eyes::eek.::at-wits-end:outside my house on the 2/25/13 in the middle of the night from the front door forward pulled the mirror out that was folded in broke it right on the corner scratch it up and bent the edge of the door,scratch up the side vent, scratch up the rim,scratch up and bent the side body molding at the bottom pulled off the mud guard scratch up the wheel well molding its in the shop now all being replaced by my Infiniti dealer at the cost of $4965 -$500 i have to pay all i can do is smh in pain the mirror alone cost $1165 thats crazy.

This suuuucks big time !! I sure don't miss street parking at all ....... lived 6 years on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan with half the time parking in the streets where my then brand new Volkswagon Jetta got beat up big time :eek.: !!! When I got a brand new Lexus IS when they first came out in 2006 I finally got an indoor garage which of course was like half the rent of my 1 bedroom apartment !?!?!

Life is good now ....... with my own driveway and garage yaaay :smile (2):
 
Doing a tire rotation after installing the rear shocks/ bushings and it happens. My key for my spline lugs strips. Ahhhrrrggg! I can't get off the lugs in the front off! They're too short to put on a wrench or anything to grasp them.

I try every tool I have and look up online at Sears and they have a special tool to take off stripped lugs. I'm about to leave my house when my buddy comes over with a 6 point 17mm socket and takes them off easily. WTF? i thought the spline lugs were secure as tge give you a key. And he uses a standard 17mm socket and takes them off?

Went and got a new lug nut set...hahahaha.

get a 12 point socket 21 or 22 and hammer it down on the key lugs, till u get that socket replaced. My key socket is bad too.

the mirrors are expensive because of the camera so its to be expected.
