Wow chris. I just started cleaning mine yesterday -- it's a 2 day process for me. 1) clean 2) clean again 3) air dry 1 day 4) spray light coats for a few hours until red oil is shown on inside.

don't over oil chris, or else you'll get oil on your MAF sensor.

Also, make sure when you clean, you only have water going from the inside out, so you don't push stuff into the filter.

Yeah it took be 3-Days. I'm highly thinking of buying a second one to eliminate the down time.
 
Wow guys. Mine takes less than an hour from removal to reinstallation. Are you shaking the filter to dry it out? I shake mine, then pat it with a paper towel, then air dry for 30mins or so. Re-apply oil and install immediately. That may not technically be correct but it's never caused me any problems...

Yea that seems like a really long time. Mine was extremely dirty, similar to the pic above, and it took me a couple hours only because I cleaned it twice and over oiled it a little bit so I had to wick some of it off after waiting for it to dry, then let it dry some more.
 
No problems, but I want the correct amount of oil to ensure filtration.

30 min air dry will not do it I guarantee. When you oil it, the oil will not full penetrate the cotton and some oil will fly off when you create suction from the engine.

To fully dry it will take a few hours (air dry). I just clean it and leave it over night to dry and oil it. Let the oil seep in for 30 min, then recheck for missing places. I continue this for a while until I'm satisfied.

You only oil the outer side, and oil enough for the red dye to seep through to the other side. If it's too much, you get oil on the sensor, so then you have to clean your sensor.

I only do this once every 30-50k miles so I take my time.
 
i tried out KLASSE All in One on the hood then topped with Autoglym HD Wax
Also waxed the drivers side of the car (no Klasse) trying to see the difference if any

It's close but works out. Having them set stiffer keeps it from rubbing. I think one side has maybe half an inch of clearance

Taken me 6 months to clean and replace mine. But that's because it's been waiting at home haha.

I agree that it should be mostly dry prior to applying oil. I also agree that a 30min air dry would not suffice on it's own, but I'm talking about accelerating the drying process via shaking (more like swinging), blotting, and then air drying. The element isn't even damp afterward, and what little moisture is left is easily displaced by the oil. I've also oiled the filter until it dripped red, never let the oil soak in before installing, and have never had any kind of maf sensor issues. Nor have I ever actually met or heard from anyone who has... By that I mean lots of people speculate that the oil causes all kinds of problems, but it just so happens that no one can ever get pictures or any kind of proof at all of the oil on a maf sensor, filter oil in the intake tract, or anywhere else. I'm not saying that it's an urban legend for sure, but it certainly is in my opinion. Another common related misconception is that the buildup from the pcv system is caused by the k&n oil.

I'm not implying that you're doing it wrong Ed, I'm just saying it doesn't have to take so long. I also do it every 5K-ish miles, so the process is a little less intense for me.

I think I may have fix my gas gauge level problem. For the pass 18 months with the FX, not once that my gas gauge shown full even after I top it off. Before I start with the fix, the low on fuel indicator was lit. I took the rear seat out to gain access to the tank, undo a handful of screws, took out both senders and clean it, put it back in, start the car and it shows a quarter of a tank on the gauge. I went to fill it up this morning, it took 14.9 gallons and my gas gauge now show full for the first time.
I will put a DIY together if anyone interested. :tup:

Nice. Yeah, post it up Andrew. It sounds pretty doable and would be a real bonus for those of us that have developed the same issue....

yeah, I've heard that some gas additives, maybe even ethanol, can cause a build up on the resistor & the build isn't conductive & can cause gage problems, if cleaning it helped then that's probably what happened... also heard that adding some sea foam to the gas to clean out the system can help with this too, but nothing like cleaning it directly I guess
