What are the best headers?

Man, I always end up busting a knuckled working on the FX. I look even worse now from all the fog light stuff. I have scratches up to my elbows from sticking my arms all up in the bumper.
Glad you got them in though, always feels good to do it yourself.

heh, I guess i'm a real glutton for punishment. I had it in my garage up on jack stands with some concrete blocks just under the tires (just in case).

Yeah, as much pain in the ass as it is, your right, it always feels better doing something myself. I know I appreciate it more.

At least you are in a somewhat cold climate. Though I remember Colorado Springs gets hot in the summer. It gets really hot in my garage because it's insulated, so if I pull the FX in the engine heats up the garage. I should install some ceiling fans in there just for this summer.

It was in the 60's so it was perfect weather for this. Never broke a sweat

I actually tapped the headers with my hand after it was on and rev'ed a bit for about 3-4 minutes and didn't get burned, they felt hot but not enough to burn.
Hard to say how the temps really differ without having a fancy tool to read it but so far i'm impressed with the coat.

sound is a tiny bit different, I expected it to be louder but it doesn't sound louder just a slight different tone to it. I drove it around the neighborhood but was kinda afraid to get on the gas since my temps were going up and down like crazy. I had to partially drain the radiator to move the water line during the install. So it had a bunch of air pockets. I think most of them are out now though. I'm sure it makes a difference but for me it wasn't too much, the rest of the exhaust is stock so that needs to change in order to really feel a difference.

I'm debating on either doing a pulley or save up for a big back yard project. Gotta fix up the nest too. Back yard is hard labor so i'm not really looking forward to it =/

It would have been nice to do a before & after clip but I don't have a video camera.
As for the sound it sounds the same at idle. When I rev it up it sounds slightly different but not much at all. My wife didn't notice a difference
Only thing I can think of is the coating is keeping some of the sound in.

Yours sounds pretty sweet though, I remember watching that clip here somewhere

Congrats HYME,

Welcome to the Header DIY club. I'm sure when you took the OE headers off, you thought you were half done, right?

Well it's really not for the weak hearted. The proble also is that if for some reason you can't install it, there is nothing you can do but to tow it somewhere to have it done.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I think there should be a section in the :iS: called DDIY (Don't Do It Yourself), and it should include horror stories about Header Installations.

Good Job.

LOL, thats exactly what I thought too!
I also found out that I didn't need to drop the steering rack!
You can remove the bolt on the lower part of the knuckle/joint and push up on the steering column. There is in fact enough room there to seperate the two. I was told there wasn't.

It's actually the LMS charger that shadyJC and turbocad6 had...
I've been debating on installing it with the J&S safeguard.
Been reading up on some other ways of going about it.
Osiris uprev seems like a pretty sweet piggy if one gets the "tuner" edition
Put your own fuel maps in and tweak them or set an AFR target and it will adjust by itself. Don't know how well this feature works though.

What I don't like about the J&S is that if your knock sensor ever goes out, so will your motor. Scary thought

If I had a place out here like teknosquare to flash my ecu then I would install the J&S just as a safety precaution.

seriously, I don't know but I felt a nicely noticable gain after 3500-4000 rpms and the last time I measured (with full exhaust, lowering, MD spacer, intake & +2 advance), I could go below the 7 sec 0-60 @ 70F ish.. As I said before in other threads, you feel the most gain when all of the exhaust mods are "compatible" with each other (ie, around same diameter, no sudden increase/decrease at the flanges). Headers' gain will be as good as a cat-back gain if not more alone but pair them up with a good y-pipe and y-back and you're good to go..

IF only we could arrange that dyno day.. We'd know at least how much I'm pushing.. (not more than many others obviously but just curious)
