Weird Noise from Tank area

Yesterday I noticed that when I let go of the gas pedal, as the RPM drops, there is a sqeeking noise from the rear of the car. At first I tought it was a loose belt but I verified and it was from the rear.

Also, there was a constant noise as well which I asumed was from the Walbro Fuel pump which is know for being loud. I was running low on gas but since my fuel level indicator, like a lot of other people, does not work properly, I did not think it was that low.

Today as I droped off my Kids at school, I noticed that the noise was still there and it would come on as I let go of the pedal. All of a sudden, the noise came on but stayed on. Within a few seconds my Engine Light came on as well. At this point I was convinced that it must be the fuel pump dying. No more than a minute later, as I was shifting from 1 to 2, right about 3K RPM, the engine stalled and came back.

I wasn't sure if I was running out of gas or it was the Fuel pump giving out. So I drove another few blocks to a Mobile Station. I filled it up with about 10 Gallons of 91 Gas, and hit the gas a few times. But the Engine light stayed on.

I drove to the dealer and I explained the problem. Unfortunatly, all the Lead Techs where at a meeting so they could not check the code, so the service manager asked me to come back. He did however tell me that a lot of people are having the fuel gage issue. Also he said that my problem may have to do with the Fuel Sending Sensor??? Furthermore, he said that since I've changed my fuel pump there might be an issue with warranty, but he'll try to work it out for me.

I drove for about 20 miles in traffic and stopped to get lunch, when I got back in the car, the Engine light was off and has not come back on since. I drove to Orange County and back, but nothing.

WTF???

Improperly installed or dying fuel pump? Sounds like you probably had a low amount of gas in there and when you shifted the car jerked making it so the pump couldn't get fuel (starving). I remember following the stage 4 fuel pump instructions and it had to be done exactly as shown or you could have potential problems.. I don't have the instructions anymore. Also the walbro is noisy, I hear it every time I am driving.

EDIT: Here are the stage 3 instructions page 12 talks about the fuel pump. I recall it being exactly the steps needed... http://www.stillen.com/product_files/407363IC3~inst.pdf

I remember downloading the instructions and following it. We did the drilling the nozle and cutting the clip and everything according to the instrutions. Also, the noise was not a normal pump noise. it was much louder. It sounded almost like a computer fan going out or a crashed harddrive with head scratching disks.

Could it be dirty fule at the bottom of the tank? The starving feeling happend the day again on Staturday on my way back from the track. It was showing empty again. It happened aroud 4k rpm. I thought I was really runing out of gas but when I pumped it took only 19 gallons. I've pumped 21 and 22 gallon as well in the past. But what is the Fuel Send Unit?

Isn't the fuel sender unit the complete fuel pump system including the level sensor. I know there are 2 covers, one behind the passenger seat which is a fuel pump and level sensor, and one behind the drivers seat which is the second level sensor.

update...

It happend again today. I left home today and the screen showed I had 41 miles to empty but the empty light was on. I dove about 5 miles or so and the display turned to **** miles to empty.

After driving about another 10 miles, I noticed that the noise is back. This time the Check Engine light did not come on and there was no Starving feeling.

I went straight to a gas station and pumped gas (after running into some idiot who came out of park with out looking, who scraped the paint out of my rear passenger wheel):mad::mad:.

As soon the Tank was full at 17 which means that there was at least 3 gallons in there. However, the noise was immediately gone. How smart is this fuel send this unit. could it be that it works based on a sensor and not an actual amount of gas? This would make sense if when it thinks its really empty it goes in to this starvation mode.:err:

moral of this story .... dont run on empty.

That's the thing, I've had my FX near empty a few time and it takes over 20 gallons to fill. It only took 17 gallons to fill it today, and about 19 to fill it the last time it made this noise. I hardly think that's empty. Even at 13 MPG, that't at least 30 miles to empty. When I have it completely full, the gage stops bellow full where it used to be above the last line. The fact that the gage is showing incorrect fuel level is not for informations purpose, I think it also reacts to it somehow. I thinking, it senses that it's running on empty, but there is still fuel flowing, so it takes this as a problem and reacts to it.
