alright, back from vacation & I did wind up getting the first 2 pair out before I left as you can see.
what you don't see is that for one week before I left, I worked on these 2 pairs of lights for about 4 hours a night, every night up until past midnight each night including the night before I left to get these done & ready to go out. this is even after I had much of these prepared & ready for assy & finishing already... this is just very tedious work & the chrome is really the thing that just defeated me totally.
I have stated before that I think I have now mastered a way to deal with this chrome & get perfect chrome rings. well, I spoke a bit too soon, because even though I was able to get them painted without really damaging the chrome & having no chrome lifting like it would with the tape, the chrome still winds up with some blemishes, weather it's dust, a finger print or a smudge or even a slight mark from where my covers contact it for paint, they look fine but you just can't wipe away even the most minor blemish, print, dust or smudge or anything, because the chrome will be damaged, but then again it's impossible to not at least smudge, print or touch the chrome either. picture a piece of glass which is a mirror & then picture smudges & finger prints & dust on it, never going to look good, but the most I can do is huff a warm breath on it & very very lightly dust over them with a microfiber cloth, anything more than that will rub the chrome right off in that spot. I really want flawless & perfect inside a headlight housing, to me nothing less is going to look professional & like OE. but up until now this has just been absolutely impossible for me.
as I was finishing these lights I had docs set just about done, filler panels in & LEDs mounted & everything, ready to install in the housing & close it up with the lens, but there were a few minor marks on the chrome hear & there, like a smudgy mirror kind of look, so I delicately wiped them just a little here & there, & one or 2 of the spots just remained. a little more wiping & bang, screw me, the chrome just wiped off in that spot :eeerr: hours & hours of work down the drain. made a feeble attempt at touching up but no, just looked horrible, once the chrome is blemished it's done/ruined. I go back to the rest of my chrome to replace these & realize that the majority of the chrome is blemished in some way or another, some just from my testing & some from prior attempts & some from test fitting & developing the covers I made to paint them & some just from handling & cutting the part out for the inner projector shroud.
I winded up ripping open another set of headlights & using those bezels to redo them yet again, as I was very determined to get these done & out by the deadline I set. even they winded up not being flawless, but I got them to be somewhat acceptable & pretty decent. this was the best I could get in at least 10 attempts at this, the chrome rings are just beyond my control at this point, I have a ton of patience & perseverance but this chrome has just wore me down & kicked my ass.
I do realize that I am a very anal person & what is crap to me can still be great to others, & I couldn't make doc wait anymore because of my anal compulsion for perfection so I winded up sending him the best I could do & he so far is comfortable with the way they came out. they are not bad at all, but they are just not flawless & not what I'd say I'm happy with as an end result. I am nuts when it comes to this & that's the main reason that I haven't even finished my own headlights yet, I won't install them until there flawless, & if I never get them flawless then I'll never actually install them, period.
I can't expect all of you to have the patience or be as anal as I am, so instead of saying chrome is out, I'll just say that if you insist on chrome then realize that chrome will have some minor imperfections. I will do my best but it is inevitable & my chrome supply is scarce as I have sacrificed so much good chrome in the development of these lights.
now paint is a totally different story, I can get paint as good as I require no problem, which is why I also did a set of the silver aluminum ring set that I showed pictures of at that point. if you want flawless then paint is the only way I can realistically deliver that at this point. I can do body colored rings or silver/aluminum rings or all black or satin bezel with gloss rings or vice versa. I really ask anyone who is on my list to reconsider there choice, anyone who still insists on chrome will get it because that's what I did promise, but with the stipulation that it will not be totally flawless...
also, as far as building more of these lights, I think the guys who got in on this are very lucky because there probably the only ones who will have these lights for a long while, I have all my own projects on hold until I complete my commitment here, but after that I am not going to be actively looking for more orders for these lights.
first of all I estimated I could build these base lights comfortably at around $400 each plus the cores & options & not get hurt, maybe even make a few bucks, but I then since added the HID ability with shrouding & then the clear side markers & then the finishing & assy & fillers all take way more time than I originally expected, really increasing the amount of work & materials it takes to build these. winds up more like really being at least $650 worth of labor & materials even priced at the hobby level, so I'm almost at a loss on these, def not a profit venture at all, I've lost track of the many hundreds & hundreds I've spent on mold making materials & paints & epoxies & aluminum for the internals & the amount of headlights sacrificed in this development too, I see myself burning through over 20 sets of headlights to get a final of 8 finished sets of these, not to even mention the countless hours on these. I'm the kind of guy that I'll deliver what I promised even at a loss, this whole thing was mainly not just about the money for me anyway, so the guys these are promised to are getting exactly what they should at the price given, but don't start lining up saying me too cause I am not going to be able to do it. the guys on this list & the few others that I have committed too are getting these, don't worry ray, this includes you

that's about it at this point. when I finish if I have any headlights left & any patience left I'll see from that point if any more of these get built for sale but I'm not looking to even discuss further sets at this point at all...
second of all, I have a lot of work I want to do to my own fx this winter, been driving it for 1 1/2 years already & haven't done all that much to it in that time besides minor stuff like interior brakes suspension & wheels, etc..., but now I finally want to do some more radical mods. I bought an HR drivetrain months ago that I refuse to even touch until these headlights are behind me, need to get started on that swap & then I want to redo the body a bit this winter too, at least a body kit or something, got a few things in mind there. also need to do a batch of paddle shifters that many guys are waiting forever for, & a few other projects that are just hanging over my head, so I'm sorry to say but I don't think I'll be building more of these lights for a while at least, so yeah, the guys who got in on this are pretty lucky I guess. eventually I may come up with a more stream lined way of building these but don't hold your breath
rubare, since you paid me in full for your lights months ago, your set is up next, in general I want to follow the order of the list, but even though I didn't want your money at all I have had it for a while now too since you sent it to me anyway, so your up. lmk if you want body colored rings like you hinted at, cause I'd really rather do that even than chrome at this point. if you like the silver aluminum look I showed I have a set like that close to done really, they match the silver rails nicely I think

lmk what you want. when yours are done then I'll go to the list, take deposits & one by one these'll get finished & go out...
