Tiptronic question

FYI, it is pretty simple to reverse the shift pattern to make it a forward/downshift and backward/upshift.

Two wires behind the radio need to be reversed and you're good to go.

Very nice. I hate manu-matics that have an upshift over ride. Do you know at what RPM the limiter kicks in? Or how many RPM past redline we have to play with?

There has been a discussion going on in Mike's thread so I'm going to answer my own questions as an FYI to members in this one.

In tiptronic mode:

1. No upshift override
2. Downshift override
3. No rev limiter on my 08 FX

no rev limiter? so you can hit 8krpm & more?

Correct. No rev limiter on the upshift. I assume it has been deactivated, or was never activated from the factory. There is obviously one available as can be seen on FxJojo's video.

or do you mean downshifting? I doubt you could throw it into 1st at like 50mph if that's what you mean...

Correct again. I believe (read:hope) that the downshift override would kick in given such a situation.

Well i wouldn't try it unless i was really sure of it, you're dealing with your big bucks there...i only try it with loaner cars to practice, and btw does hard acceleration hurt in automatic hurt the car?

Does newer (2005 and after) have rev matching when downshifiting?
I have a 2004 and it doesn't rev match, so the transmission is very restrictive when trying to downshift to 1st gear. Is there a software update to get rev matching?

I drive an 07 fx35 and I only use tiptronic unless I'm looking for parking. When I first started using it I felt like I was doing it wrong, the gear transition was very rough. I felt like I was forcing the car to switch gears, I wouldn't ease off the gas during gear changes. Now I just shift, ease off the gas for a second and continue to accelerate and everything goes smoothly. I never want to go back to auto anymore, it feels WAY more sluggish to me. The car isn't fun to drive anymore unless its in tiptronic. In first, the car feels very torquey + way more reponsive.

i think it works better if you keep the throttle pinned. when i let off, shift, and get back on sometimes i wont shift until you put the gas down again. just keep the throttle down and shift early if you dont want to take off.

ha, revs will always go up when downshifting, that's engine braking. rev matching is more like a blip of the throttle to make engagement less harsh... don't see a big advantage really, I kinda like the engine braking as is without rev matching, guess I've never had it to know if it's better though...

that's interesting. can you explain rev matching on an automatic then, that does it for you? i actually do this while driving in manumatic also, if i know im downshifting into first i always hit the gas for a second so i dont suddenly slow down without the brakes coming on.

I feel the brake pedal go down when I downshift at medium range revs. Don't know if that's part of the rev matching feature though.. As far as I know, regular auto rev matching is when the engine gives a little throttle so the engine braking is not that abrupt, much like Turbo said. Without it, if you downshift at a relatively medium-high range, you'll feel like you hit the brakes suddenly. Rev matching smooths that out..

I guess I'm used to blipping the throttle myself if I know it's gonna be a harsh downshift, with rev matching the computer knows the rpm it'll drop to & matches that on the downshift, it actually hits the gas for you sorta
