The Random Question Thread

He guys, random question. I just bought a used 2010 fx35 and after watching a youtube video of an fx37 I noticed that it had an exterior chime when the guy in the video started his fx37 and then got out of it with his keys in his pocket. Mine doesn't chime at all when I do that, is it because the chim was added on later models?

I owned a 2009 Lancer before this fx and it too had the keyless entry. It did have an exterior chime that beeped when I unlocked the doors, locked them, exited the car with the key, or tried to lock the doors with the key still inside... Should my fx35 2010 be doing that too?

My '03 chimes when I exit the car with the iKey in my pocket and close the door with ignition on. It's probably in the settings, but a 2nd gen guy will have to point you closer.

I feel like this doesn't look right..?

You are totally correct... one leaky valve cover.

Well that sucks, considering that this is the first time I've ever changed a spark plug. Lol well this was the closest spark plug on the driver side. So I picked the next one.. The coil was dry (dried oil) but the spark plug was also oily..

Is it just one valve cover that needs to be replaced?

Yes, the valve cover will need to be replaced. This what's the job looks like.

Ahhh.. A bit more than I can chew lol, with this valve cover, would I have to replace the gasket and clean that oil as well?

The leaks is due to the ware and tare of the gasket that seals the the metal tubing for the plug to the cover. That gasket is pressed in between the inner and outer pieces of the valve cover. It cannot be replaced by itself. No need to clean out the oil on the exposed cam portion if that what you're referring to.

So instead of buying a right side gasket (saw it on eBay), I would have to purchase only the valve cover.. I'm assuming it comes with a new gasket?

Not sure what was on eBay, but the OEM part is the whole plastic valve cover with seals permanently integrated into it. The dealer quoted me $1590 - I hope this was for both sides.

Andy, I've been procrastinating on this for a while. What is the risk of putting it off? Just burning more oil?

I did some more research and found that I should have a keyless system buzzer behind or near the front right headlight. I will have to take a look at that and see if it's not plugged in or maybe just corroded. Never heard a beep coming out of there!

This works on the Gen 1s: press and hold the fob lock and unlock buttons for 10 secs. Mine reset and restored the chime of the handle lock button.

Nope, no go. As far as the OM goes, it says that this procedure will only unable and disable the horn response and not the Keyless warning buzzer. It seems like that one can't be deactivated. I will have to drop the front bumper and take a look at it as soon as I get a few hours of free time ;) I found a lot of threads on this forum about this same issue but they were all either 1st gen or the owner of the thread never reported back what was the solution, if any.

You dont need valve covers most of the time! Its just the gasket material that hardens and starts to get plastic like and no longer seals the valve cover,Just be careful and be gentle when prying the valve cover off once you take all the hold down screws off so that you dont crack it, try one corner at a time, then carefully pry the gasket off the cover with a mini screw driver. A set of valve cover gaskets at your local parts store should be relatively cheap. Victor reinz is pretty good. Make sure its a set that way it comes with the spark plug tube seals aswell.

Pork, not real sure what risk this problem may bring.

Our valve covers have integrated Spark plug tube seals. Almost unreplaceable. There are a couple manufacturers that have created a kit to replace the spark plug seals. You have to get a hole saw, place it over the tube seals, and cut the old seals out of the valve cover. Then insert their new seals with in place of the old ones. Haven't looked into it for a while, but I think one of them doesn't do it anymore.. The other company was sending you a valve cover with the seals already replaced, but you had to send in your core. People stopped sending in their cores and they stopped doing it. Really suggest the only proper way to do it now is to buy a new valve cover and new gasket.

I let mine go for a little while. I don't know if it was coincidence, but I started getting a misfire as the oil pooling started messing with the coil and Spark plug.

Pork, I may have someone that can do it for you as he did mine. Just have to see what his availability is.

From my experience with the 1st Gen FX35 and FX45, you have to replace the entire valve cover to the this problem. Again, you cannot replace just the gasket around the spark plug hole. That gasket is permanently pressed/fused into the inner and outer layer of the valve cover. You have to replace the entire valve cover.

Sounds like the gasket that Themechanic is referring to is the gasket that seals the valve cover to the block. Replace this gasket will not fix the "oil in the spark plug hole/well" problem with the 1st Gen FX35 or the FX45. You have to replace the entire valve cover. Some listing on ebay may come without the gasket that seals the cover to the block. I highy suggest you replace this gasket while you had it open up. The cost of taking the cover out at a later to replace this gasket will be way much more than doing the right the first time.

Cool. I'm interested! I've been putting it off for a long while and haven't noticed any significant repercussions. Anytime is time to get it done. Best to keep stuff clean.
And yeah, I think that place was in Montebello that stopped their core exchange rebuild program.
