Personally, I don't like to stretch tires, it definitely affects performance and safety, but I know many people do it.

For example the recommended rim width for Parada Spec X in a 265/50/20 is 7.5 to 9.5" This is off the Tire Racks site. But if you are going to a 22" tire in some profiles it is acceptable to run them on a 10.5" rim.
You didn't say what diameter wheel you were talking about.

^^^Thanks guys, I was thinking 265/40/22 tire on a 10.5 wheel. I really want 285/35/22 though, but they are really hard to find used.
 
According to the FSM, driver side: positive is L (blue), negative is B/W; passenger side: positive is G/B, negative is B/R
