The Random Question Thread

the rear is a disc brake, with an internal drum parking brake... that is not a picture of the rear brakes, the rear disc brakes are removed in that shot and you are looking at the internal parking brake there... I don't get the joke either....

He said the rears HAVE drum brakes. Not that they ARE drum brakes. As a grammar nerd I can appreciate it. Its not funny, but I can appreciate it. ;)

Ed, you still have shakes?

I had shake at I think 60-70 mph and now after re-balance, I have shake at 50-60 mph. I found out the shop I was going to, their hunter machine can't do a full balance because they don't have the "latest" model.

Pepboys is just now upgrading all their wheel balancers to the top of the line Coats, but all the stores around me don't have it, only the one in South Side of Chicago (south Cicero).

So I called Just Tires, and there is one shop that can do it -- Norridge! They not only have the latest Coats machine but also the latest Hunter machine. This is pretty rare as most shops just have one or the other, as both top line models have "road force" measurements and diagnostic.

He said they can also do truck and commercial truck wheel balancing so 24" are easy.

It's $19.95/each wheel for dynamic balancing (not static!) and $95/hour for road force measurement/diagnostics.

He said I'll have no shake for sure since the wheels are perfect (I had 0 shake with Pirelli's) and that he'll run the wheels on both his machines to be 100% sure.

I'll have to put them in my FX and put on my winter's, as they won't touch spacers/adapters.

The good news for people going into 24's, is that they are becoming popular with SUV's (Escalades, Hummers, etc...) that the people I've talked to in the industry are saying, eventually all the new wheel balancers will easily handle 24's, once the stores upgrade their machines.

So right now, it's just a matter of time to find the shops that have the right machines.

This also lead me to find out why so many people have shakes with the FX, not only are our FX's sensitive, most tires shops can balance 22's, but not properly. They are only equipped to properly balance up to 20's, but the 22's will go on there but won't get the right balance from what I'm told.

Some might even get a static balance vs. a dynamic balance.

These new machines, the shop owner of Norridge says he tests using a rolling pin and also sonar! Then lasers are used to place the weights exactly where they need to be.

I'll report back when I have a chance to do all this.

Wow, nice that you found the shop. So far Discount did a very decent job on balance mine, Andrew and Chris 22".

I called the discount tire near you, they can do up to 24" with their Hunter. They do have a nice balancer, which is why you guys don't have shake.

Same thing with discount, I have to take the wheels off the car. I opted for Just Tires since they have both Hunter and Coats.

I think it makes sense that a primary business in wheels/tires has good balancers where my local mechanic which I thought had the latest model, did not.

I think the latest machines with all the accessories are a lot of money, like up to $50,000? Especially the commercial tire ones.

:hahaha: I didn't know DT uses Hunter. I never really pay much attention to that machine. I was more concern with them jamming that bar into the wheel when they un-mount and mount the tires.

Yeah you have to stand there and watch or else techs can get sloppy.

When tires are mounted, some just force the wheel on top of it to expand the grips out on the inner lips, which makes nicks on the corners of the claws.

You need to make sure they open the claw all the way, then set the wheel and tire in the center and push down so the claws hook inward and catch the outer lip.

I've seen a lot of broken center caps too, it all depends on whether the last guy put on silicon on the edges before place it on for easily removal.

I have no complaint on the DT by my house. The guy that did my wheel took good care of my wheels. He examines each wheel before he places it on the mounting table. He even wipe the area of the table where the wheel made contacts to the table. :smile (2): Yeah, its all in the tech's attitude and care for others property. I've seen sloppy tech.

Ok, i found a good deal on Unichip that came out from Z, but it doesn't come with software, usb cable or base maps. Only unit itself and all necessary wiring are included.
Do I really need a personal license from Unichip that cost $97? Thanks in advance

Is it the Q version? You need the license if you want to tune yourself. If you just want a standard tune to roll with, you can use the free version of the software for long enough to load it. As for getting the maps, I'm sure one of the nice members here can hook you up........ ;)
